Chapter Eight

Elijah sat at his dining table with the first aid kit out and scattered over the table. He had tended to the wounds that he could see but the large gash on his back was the one he was struggling with. He tried to reach over his shoulder to clean it but was unable to.

"That looks painful." He heard a soft timid voice call from behind him. He turned around to see Mairi standing at the bottom of the stairs watching him with caution in her eyes. Elijah could see that she was wearing the dressing gown that he had left out for her. She had her arms crossed around her body in a way that she was trying to give that little bit of protection.

"It's not as bad as it looks," Elijah told her as he turned back around and tried to continued to clean his wound. He heard her footsteps approach him slowly, her bare feet tapped and scuffed against the wooden floor. He felt a chilling hand touch against his stopping his from cleaning his wound.

"Here, Let me." She took the cloth from his grip and began to gently clean the large wound. But when she was cleaning it she noticed that it was not as bad as what it looked like last night. "This looked worse last night."

"Yeah, accelerated healing. It's a perk of ah," Elijah began but was not sure on how to finish his sentence.

"Being a werewolf."

"Yeah, that." Elijah sighed before they fell into a comfortable silence while Mairi softly dabbed his wound. "So, um."

"I know what you're about to ask." Mairi interrupted him, "Yes I am scared. But the way I figure it. If you were going to hurt me you already would have." She chuckled followed by Elijah's chuckle.

"It now makes sense when you had a meltdown about how the movie portrayed werewolves." Mairi laughed again causing Elijah to laugh as well.

"You must have so many questions," Elijah muttered,

"I do," Mairi answered back as she put down the cloth and looked for a dressing big enough to cover the wound. "Starting with who that was last night."

"I don't know." Elijah answered, "A packless wolf looking to cause problems."

"When you said that the town used to be cut off from the outside world?" Mairi asked him as she found a big enough dressing for the wound.

"This was a town that was kept off the map, it was a werewolf only town," Elijah told her as she taped the dressing to his back.

"I thought you would have had like a packhouse or something," Mairi asked curiously. This is a whole new world to her and she wanted to know as much as Elijah would tell her.

"Packhouse?" Elijah laughed, "God no, the closest thing we have to a packhouse would be the town hall." Elijah told her as he stood up and began to pack away the first aid box. "This is a pack, but it's built and runs like a town. Everyone has their own homes and businesses."

"I see, werewolves are nothing like what the books describe." Mairi walked over to the kitchen sink to wash her hands.

"Nothing like them. But there are bad wolves out there. What books call rouges. They are called packless and can be very dangerous as they have no rules to live by."

"I see, so does this pack have an alpha or a leader?" Mairi asked him as she dried her hands.

"Well, the Alpha is the town mayor. Which so happens to be me." Elijah said to as Mairi looked at him with a surprised look. "When I said I challenged the previous mayor or Alpha. That was my dad." He explained as they walked over to the living room area before they sat down on the sofa. "We argued and we fought. That's how our succession works here, to take the Alpha role you have to challenge the Alpha."

"So in other words, your son will challenge you once he is ready?" Mairi finished in a question.

"Or daughter. We're not that old fashioned. An alpha can be male or female."

"Then does the role Luna exist?" Mairi asked remembering everything she has ever read in books.

"In a way, yes. But it's not called a Luna, the Alpha's mate is known as the Alpha too. They are the Alpha couple." Elijah explained further for her. "The Alpha couple takes care of the pack, they deal with packless that trespass on the pack lands, other packs and the daily small problems."

"So do you have a mate yet?" Mairi asked him curiously. Elijah looked dead in her eyes,

"I hadn't. At least not until I met you at the diner." Elijah told her while never breaking eye contact with her. "You see when a wolf meets their mate. They get this feeling like butterflies in their stomach. And then they have this need to be around them."

"So I'm your mate? But I'm not a werewolf."

"But you feel a strong pull towards me. There have been werewolves mated for humans before, it's not a new or uncommon thing." Elijah explained to her as he places a strong but gentle hand on top of hers. "I didn't want you to find out about everything the way you did. I wanted to tell you after a little longer."

"Elijah..." Mairi tried to speak to him but he continued to talk,

"I was afraid that you would be taking it as well as you are." Elijah continued to ramble on, " I was so scared that you..." Mairi had had enough of his ramblings and could only think of one way to truly shut him up.

She threw her lips onto his and held his cheeks to keep him in place. It took him a moment before he kissed her back. His hand moved up to hold her cheek as their lips danced together. After a minute they pulled back and rested their foreheads against each other, their eyes still closed.

"I," Mairi went to apologise but was cut off by Elijah himself kissing her to shut her up.
