Chapter 5: Heartbreak
Bee walked through the halls of JDA with purpose. She passed the rule book, but didn't stop to look at it, knowing she could check the notification later. She stopped at a door in the west wing, and took a deep breath. It'll be fine. He'll agree. I'm doing this for Alex. She knocked on the door.
Rafe opened it. "Well hello there, gorgeous. What brings you by?" he said with a stunning grin.
She shook the dopey smile off her face and took a deep breath. "So you know how Alex has been connecting those thefts? I was wondering if maybeyoucouldgivethecasetoher? Please, please, pretty, pretty please?"
Rafe frowned. "Woah, woah, woah. First of all, it's not a case, it's a bunch of random thefts that she's stringing together to form an investigation, probably to take some heat off her precious Unseen. I can't believe she's roped you into this conspiracy theory too. How many times have I asked you to stay away from her? With the way she was brought up, I'm surprised she hasn't snapped and tried to kill all of us already."
Bee frowned at him. "What's that supposed to mean? She's been there for me whenever I needed her, and she's my best friend."
He replied, "Exactly. Needed. Past tense. You have me now-you don't need her anymore. She'll be just fine without you, and you can start coming to me with your problems now."
She threw up her arms, exasperated. "You know what, I came here to ask you a favor to help make my best friend happy. Not for you to give me shit about who I'm friends with. You've been getting so controlling lately and I don't understand why." She turned around to walk away, needing some space.
Rafe grabbed her arm. "I'm sorry. Please, can you blame me for being protective? I'll give her the case. Just, will you at least consider cutting off Alex? You don't need her or anyone else, not when you have me."
Bee tugged her hand away and said quietly, "I can't depend on only one person. Never again." She walked away, needing to talk to Alex, the only one who understood.
She saw Alex walk out of her room, dark circles under her eyes, but before Bee could catch her attention, an attractive looking guy walked out of the adjoining room. Who's this? A new recruit, or maybe a transfer. Bee ran up and jumped on Alex's back.
Alex grunted. "Very sneaky, Bee. I definitely didn't hear you running. At all."
Bee huffed. "Well I wasn't trying to be sneaky. Anyways, who's the cutie? Can I ship it?"
Alex smacked her on the arm, and gently dropped her on the floor."No. Bee, meet Victor, the current Unseen second in command. Victor, meet Bee, my best friend," Alex said.
Bee smirked. "Do you have anything to do with why Alex was in such a huff earlier?"
Victor glanced at Alex before replying smugly, "I may have escaped capture and gotten away with murdering one of her targets."
"Not for long. You're here now, aren't you?" Alex snapped.
"Alexandra the Great is rankled? Damn, boy, you must've gotten her good," Bee said, impressed. Well it's no wonder, Alex said he's the current Unseen second in command. That takes a lot more skills than I have. "Anyways, the real reason I tracked you down was to tell you Rafe is going to let you take point on an investigation into the series of random thefts occurring."
Alex went still for a second, before turning to Bee with disbelief written all over her face. "Seriously?" Bee grinned widely, and Alex grabbed her to pull her in for a big hug. "Thank you so much. You're the best."
Alex released her and started pacing, muttering her plans for the case. "I'm going to need tech backup, so Doc's definitely being brought in. Bee, can you see what you can dig up about the cases? I'm going to go find someone free who can be my backup in the fighting department."
Victor cleared his throat, but Alex ignored him and continued thinking out loud. Victor cleared his throat again, and Alex asked irritatedly, "What?"
Victor crossed his arms. "You said you need someone who can fight? Why not ask the Unseen standing right here?"
Alex looked him over then gave him a flat look. "No."
"No?"
"No."
Victor looked startled. "Well, why not?"
Alex raised an eyebrow. "You're still an Unseen in our custody, who knows what kind of secret messages you can send just by talking to one of our contacts. Our informants are confidential and you're still not trustworthy. We both know you could've escaped a while ago, so the only realistic reason for your presence is a secret agenda. And you interrupted my sleep. So no."
"Ouch. Looks like you're not on this case. Better luck next time," Bee said. He's not giving up. Not with that look on his face.
"Who else knows Unseen tactics and strategies as well as I do? Who else knows the same contacts that I know you've kept in touch with? Better yet, what better way to figure out my hidden agenda? You know how the saying goes. Friends close and enemies closer, and all that jazz," Victor reasoned.
Alex scowled. "Fine, but I'm watching you."
Victor turned and walked down the hall, swinging his hips in a sultry way that had Bee choking with laughter. "I certainly hope so."
Alex's gaze drifted downwards while watching Victor walk away, before she realized herself and ran after him yelling, "Oy idiot! You have no idea where you're going!"
Bee chuckled to herself. They're going to hook up eventually. I'm calling it. She turned around and started walking back to her room so she could get to work on digging up information. Lost in thought, she didn't notice when someone began to walk next to her.
"Hey Bee, can you get my Balenciagas back from Rafe? He borrowed them a few days ago and hasn't given them back yet. I was planning on wearing them on my date with Alex tonight," Brandon said.
Bee jumped. "Ack, sorry, I didn't see you. Yeah, I can go ask him. But, I don't think you're going on a date with Alex tonight. She got a case."
Brandon faltered. "Oh. Okay. Still can you get them back for me? They're Balenciagas. I'm getting kind of anxious." Bee searched his eyes, but all she found was a somewhat knowing look and something indiscernible. Is Rafe trying to surprise me with something?
Bee smiled an easy smile and shrugged. "Sure. No problem." Bee pivoted and walked back to Rafe's room. Ugh, too much walking today. She heard voices inside, so she knocked, and waited for a minute.
When there was no reply, she knocked again before calling out, "Rafe, I came to get Brandon his Balenciagas. I'm coming in now." She heard muffled cursing and didn't know what to think. Regardless, she gave him a few more seconds before opening the door.
Inside, she saw Rafe and a girl racing to put their clothes on, saw the messy bed.
Saw the condom wrapper on the floor.
The two looked at her, an almost blank look on Rafe's face, while the girl shot her a smug look. The girl was still a student at JDA-Rachel. Rafe had been tutoring her. Clearly not just in academic subjects.
Bee flipped her off, not even looking at Rafe, before walking out, leaving the door wide open. She dazedly walked back to her room, crumpled up into a ball, and didn't move, didn't cry, just lay there, surrounded by the shattered pieces of her heart.
Eventually Alex walked in, carrying ice cream, cookies, popcorn, and movies. She put the ice cream in the mini fridge, the popcorn and movies on her side table, and the plate of cookies within grabbing range. Alex leaned down to give Bee a hug, before putting one last thing down. A file on top of her laptop. Alex left, a cold aura surrounding her. Rafe deserves what she's planning for him.
Bee wallowed for a few more hours, munching on cookies, before getting up and pulling herself together. Come on girl, don't let him break you. She took a deep breath and forced herself to get out of bed. She grabbed the file, her laptop, and the ice cream before flopping back onto the bed. After looking through the file, she ate a giant spoonful of ice cream, opened up her laptop, and started looking into the recent disappearance of a commemorative sextant from an auction.
