Chapter 1: A Mysterious Dream
Hello thank you for taking interest in reading my story. This is the first one I'm publishing on this site, so please don't hate on it. This was inspired by a dream I had a while back and I really wanted to write a share it.
This is the story of a girl named Laura Greengate. She was around 10/11 years old and she lived with her parents in a town called Rosenville, which was surrounded by green. She was an adventurous girl full of spirit and curiosity. Her most favourite place to go was the park. She lived right next door to it and it was a truly marvellous place for her. The park was huge and had a wide variety of trees ranging from towering oak trees to silky willow trees. There was a magnificent late that stood right in the middle of the park. Ducks and other water birds would swim on it and the sunlight would reflect light off of it like a gigantic mirror. The park also had a number of colourful, vibrant flowers growing and various wildlife such as birds and small mammals were inhabited within it.
Laura had always had some special connection to the place, she had been going there ever since she was little. It was probably because of her love for nature that it would always make her so happy. She would climb the trees and hang upside-down from them, go birdwatching and simply run around in the soft green grass. Her parents had never seen a child so in love with the place. Though Laura loved the place very much she somehow wished there was more for her out there.
But that day would come around sooner than she thought.
Laura laughed joyfully as she ran through the parks grassy fields, the cool summer wind blowing through her hair and the warm sunlight beaming upon her face. While she ran her arms were stretched out, she almost felt like she was flying. The trees swayed with the wind, their leaves rustling ever so gently. Birds tweeted merrily from above, it was so peaceful.
Laura suddenly paused when she thought she heard someone whisper her name.
LAURA.....LAURA.....LAURA
Laura looked all around her as the wind continued to whisper her name. She wasn't sure what was going on, but it was as if she felt the wind starting to push her towards the far back of the park, where the thickest trees stood, right next to the park lake. She got to where the trees met the water. She looked around some more, until something caught her eye. She turned to see a lone willow tree at the edge of the water and there was a small purple light coming from it. She wandered towards it and moved its leaves aside to see something dangling from one of its branches. It looked like some kind of crystal, Laura started at it. It began to glow brighter and brighter until everything faded into white.
Laura woke up with a gasp. She looked around her and she then realised that she was in her own bedroom lying in her bed, also she could see sunshine outside her curtains. This indicated that it was morning and that she had just woken up from a dream.
"What was that?" Laura asked herself. She had never had a dream like that before, what did it mean? Why did she have it? What was that crystal she saw? Why did it matter anyway? It was just a dream, but yet somehow it felt so real.
"Laura! Breakfast!" her mother called from downstairs.
"Coming!" Laura responded. She got out of her bed, hopped down the stairs and entered the kitchen where her mother was boiling a kettle and her dad was sitting at the kitchen table reading a newspaper. Laura sat at the table where a bowl of her favourite cereal awaited her. Normally Laura would wolf her breakfast down but she would only take one bite every minute.
"Laura? Sweetie? Are you alright?" Her mother asked. Laura looked up "Hm? Oh, yeah I'm fine Mom." She replied before spooning some more cereal into her mouth. "Are you sure? It seems like you have something on your mind." Laura swallowed her mouthful "Nothing, I just had a weird dream last night." Laura's dad looked up from his newspaper "Weird? How so?"
"Well that's the thing dad, I'm not sure." Laura answered "I was in the park and I found this...'thing'... and it was like it was telling me to touch it."
Her dad thought for a second. "Well dreams can mean lots of things Honey, they can be based on our memories, our desires, or maybe your dream is simply trying to tell you something." Laura processed this. Was her dream really trying to tell her something? Laura knew she couldn't rest until she knew what it meant. After breakfast she decided she would go to the park to see if there would be anything she could find to help her. It was Saturday so she would be able to spend the whole day there. She went upstairs to change out of her pyjamas. She put on a pair of white socks, some blue shorts, a pink t-shirt and her favourite purple jacket. She brushed her teeth and her soft brown hair before pulling on her purple hair band.
She pulled on her trainers and bid both her parents goodbye before heading straight to the park. Although she doubt she would actually find anything but she had a feeling inside that urged her to keep going. However, she had no idea where to start. Laura closed her eyes and thought back to her dream, the crystal was hanging from a willow tree next to the park lake. Deciding on where she would head next, Laura sprinted off towards the lake. When Laura got to the lake, she started to wander through the trees that surrounded the water nearby. There were many willow trees here, how was she supposed to find the one in her dream. "What am I even doing?" She walked to the edge of the water and peered at her rippling reflection. "How do I know what to look for or if I'm even gonna find anything?"
Just then, she saw some sort of light twinkling on the water's surface and it was not the sunlight. She looked to her right and her eyes widened as she saw that exact same tree in her dream! And there was a light coming from it! 'Could it be?' She thought.
She slowly stepped towards the tree, the feeling of anticipation bubbled up inside her. She took a small breath, moved the willow leaves aside and she gasped. There it was, the very same purple crystal from her dream. It was real! Laura couldn't believe it.
She continued to stare at it, mesmerised by the way it glowed. It sparkled like a shining purple star. Immediately, she began to reach for it but the branch was too high up. She tried jumping to grab it but she still couldn't touch the beautiful gem. She huffed in frustration until she noticed that the branch the crystal hung from was connected to a bigger branch that stuck out from the base of the tree. "Hmm..." Laura smiled.
From all the time she spent climbing trees and branched, this should be a snap (no tree pun intended). She headed to the trunk of the tree and put one of her hands on the low branch that stuck out. She then used her strength to pull herself up on top of it. Next she slowly started to pull herself across the branch toward the crystal. The branch started to wobble, Laura quickly gripped it. When it stopped wobbling she continued to move along. The branch was getting smaller but she was almost there. She reach out her hand to grab the crystal but her fingers were still inches apart from it. If she tried moving any further the branch might break. But Laura was not giving up, she just had to get that crystal. She attempted another grab but still missed. The crystal swayed from the motion of the branch. The second grab; unlucky. Then, on the final try....she finally managed to grasp it!
"Gotcha!" she cheered. But her moment of joy was short lived when suddenly the crystal began to glow so brightly. Light emitted from inside Laura's hand, she swore she could feel it vibrating. The branch began to shake from the vibrations, Laura started to get a little scared. She then found herself being surrounded by more light. In an instant everything around her faded to white and the branch underneath her disappeared. She was floating in mid-air with the crystal still in her grasp. Her felt her eyelid getting heavy, her consciousness starting to slip away.
Then everything went from white to black.
