Chapter 32: The truth is out

Parker waking up was a miracle, according to the doctors.

They had expected him to take upwards of a month to wake up, but he did it in under a week.

"Damn overachiever," I joked as I bumped Parker's shoulder. He chuckled a little at my joke, but then clutched his side in pain.

"Are you alright?" I asked. "Do you need me to go get the doctors?"

"No," he replied, putting his hand on top of mine to stop me from leaving. "I'll be fine, I just need some time to recover. My injuries really aren't that bad."

I scoffed. "Says the one who hissed in pain when he only laughed a little bit."

Parker just rolled his eyes at me.

"But, seriously, you aren't in any pain, right?" I knew he told me he was fine, but he would lie to me so I wouldn't worry.

"Blaze, I'm serious. I really am fine. Yes, my injuries were bad and hurt a little bit, but it's nothing I can't handle."

"Fine, but the second you are in pain, you need to tell someone. Promise?"

"Promise," he said. He held his pinky out and we locked our fingers together.

A few minutes later, I gathered up all my stuff and left. I had some homework I had to do and I had to study for a test I had coming up.

My mother was also waiting for me in the lobby, too.

When I got to the lobby, I saw that my father was with her. I started to walk over to them, but stopped in my tracks when I saw Parker's parents walk in and make eye contact with my parents.

I know his parents don't hate me, and mine don't hate him, but I can't say the same thing for our parents. From the thick tension forming, I think it's safe to say they still don't like each other. Maybe I can try and resolve some of the hatred.

Putting a smile on my face, I walked up to both sets of parents. "Hey guys!"

My father turned to me with a frown on his face. "Blaze, let's go. You don't need to be in the presence of the Kings." The way it said it made it sound like he ate a sour lemon and was spitting it out.

"Dad, please, stop this. They are good people, and so are you. There is no reason for all this hatred. Why can't you guys just get along? At least do it for the sake of your kids," I tried to reason with him, but his stone cold face was making it hard to tell if it was working.

"No, because people don't change. Once a thief, always a thief. They do not deserve our forgiveness, not after what they did."

Now it was Parker's dad's turn to speak up. "And what would that be exactly? From the way I remember it, you guys are the one who abandoned your company and my father, just so you could run off back to your country."

"WHAT?" my dad shouted. Okay, this was starting to escalate and people around us were starting to stare. "You have no right to say something like that. And anyways, we didn't run away back to Sweden. We were forced back there because your father stole the company out from under my father's feet and we became penniless. We were forced to go back, because we could not afford to stay here anymore."

"The only reason we came back is because we worked our asses off back home in order to save up enough money and come back. There were days when we skipped meals just to save up a couple extra dollars. There were days in the winter when we did not have heat, because we didn't want to waste money using it. When we finally saved up enough to come back, we saw that you had turned our company into a multi-million dollar corporation, and did not give us any credit for starting it."

Both my mother and Parker's looked fearful that their husbands were going to start fighting any second. I could see Mrs. Knight holding her husband's arm, trying to get him to calm down. My mom was squeezing my father's hand.

"That's not what happened, not even close. Yes, I'm sorry you guys suffered that much and went through everything that you did just to find out the company was stolen from you, but that doesn't mean you can accuse my family of something we didn't do. We did not steal your company from you guys."

My father snorted. "Please, that's the most pathetic lie I've ever heard in my life. Your family is nothing but a bunch of liars and thieves."

"It's not a lie. I can even call my father to confirm that's what happened."

My father huffed and crossed his arms. "Fine, do it then. He'll just prove that you guys are liars."

I couldn't help the laugh that escaped my mouth. I know this is a serious situation, but the way they were both acting right now made them seem like second graders fighting over the last cookie in the lunch line.

My mother gave me a look that said 'You better stop right now or else your ass is grounded' so I put my hand over my mouth to muffle my laugh.

"Fine," Mr. Knight grunted. Again, I tried my hardest to hold in a laugh.

The phone rang for almost thirty seconds, and right before he was about to hang up, Mr. Knight's father answered the phone.

"What do you want?" he mumbled.

"Can you please tell me about what happened between you and the Anderson's all those years ago?"

"Why? You've heard the story a million times before," he wondered.

"Because I'm trying to prove to someone that our family is not a bunch of thieves and liars."

"Fine," he mumbled.

"You know what happened in the beginning. They were new here, and needed help starting their company and I had just quit my job, so I figured I could help them out and make a little money at the same time. It was going good at first. The first year, we tried building up the company's reputation and slowly became more popular, but just when the business was about to boom, the Anderson's disappeared."

"I looked for them everywhere, I mean it was their business and they just up and vanished. I looked for weeks before I eventually gave up. Then, one of the chairman of the company came up to me and told me I was the new CEO. When I asked him what happened, he told me that the Anderson's had gone back to Sweden and abandoned the company, and I was next in line to take over."

"I tried to find them in Sweden, but I couldn't. I didn't want the company to collapse, I wanted it to be here if they ever returned to the States, so I took over by myself. When they finally returned years late, they accused me of being a thief and a liar and never listened to what I had to say. To this day, I'm still waiting for the to come back."

"Thank you father," Mr. Knight said. They said their goodbyes and Mr. Knight hung up the phone.

"Is all that true?" my father whispered.

"Yes, my father told me he tried to explain it to you guys but the same chairman who appointed my father CEO convinced your father that mine was the bad guy. They never even gave him a chance to explain himself."

My father finally dropped the frown on his face and suddenly became really sad. "I'm so sorry," he mumbled. "I had no idea. I was always told you guys were the bad guys. If I knew the truth, I wouldn't have been so harsh to you guys."

"It's fine, as long as the truth is out now, we can all start over and get rid of the grudges we held for each other."

"Oh, thank god."

"Oh, thank god."

Everyone looked over at my mom and Mrs. Knight. They had both said that at the same time. Mrs. Knight was the first one to speak. "I'm so glad our husbands finally resolved their silly feud. Every since I first met you, I've wanted to be friends with you, but couldn't because of our husbands."

"I felt the same way. I only went along with the rivalry, because I didn't want my husband to get made at me for being friends with you." They then embraced each other and promised to hang out sometime.

It was a weird sight to see, my mother and Mrs. Knight hugging, but I'm glad they are. My mother may be popular at work, but she doesn't have any true friends because she left them all behind in Sweden.

I'm hoping Mrs. Knight will be good for her. I know she also left all her family and friends behind in Japan to come to the States just like my mom, so they've had similar life experiences. It'll give them something to bond over.

Our father's then walked up to each other and gave a handshake. It was a short one, though. I think both men are still a little weirded out considering 3 minutes ago they were at each other's necks.

Despite everything that's happened, I'm glad our parent's have finally resolved their issues. It was getting tiring always having to lie about where I was going and who I was going with.

At least now there will be no more fighting.

Since our parents made up and there was no more yelling, everyone around us went back to minding their own business. I took this chance to drag my parents out of there so we could finally go home.

---

The next day at school, I was on my way to history class, when I saw Apple and a boy come out of a closet with their hair and clothes all messed up. Apple rushed off to class and the boy stood there smirking at her retreating form.

I ignored it and kept walking. Who Apple slept with was none of my business.

The rest or the day was pretty uneventful.

I think everyone has pretty much gotten over the fact that Parker was in the hospital. At least, nobody bothered me today which I was grateful for.

Towards the end of the day, Andrew approached me.

"Hey, I heard that Parker woke up? How is he doing? I haven't had time to visit him because I've, uhm, been busy working." Andrew looked really nervous.

"Yeah, he's fine as far as I know. The doctor said he's still going to have to stay in the hospital for further recovery, and he will have to go to physical therapy, but he should make a full recovery," I replied.

"That's good. Could you tell him that I hope he recovers soon?"

"Why can't you tell him yourself?" I asked.

"My parent's won't let me visit him, because they think it's a distraction from school," he replied.

"But he's your best friend! How could they do that to you? That's not right, you should be allowed to visit your friend in the hospital."

"Just forget it Blaze, you wouldn't understand anyways."

"Why wouldn't I understand Andrew? Is there something going on with your parents that I should know about?"

He was silent.

"So there is," I mumbled.

"They kicked me out," he whispered.

"What?!" I exclaimed, but quickly lowered my voice because I didn't want to attract the attention of the people around us. "Why would they do that?" I whispered.

"Because, my mom's always been sort of verbally abusive towards me, and when she found out I had a boyfriend, she kicked me out. My dad tried to stop her, but she was too angry to stop."

"What the hell?" I shouted.

"Why didn't he stop her? She can't be that strong."

He shook his head. "Trust me, he can't. He's a very timid guy and hates confrontation. Add on top of that my mother is an ex-MMA fighter, it doesn't bode well for us."

"Wow!" I whispered. "I'm so sorry. You can always stay with me if you need to, I'm sure my parents wouldn't mind."

"No, it's fine. I'm staying with Stephen's family for now, they were kind enough to let me stay with them. Now all I need to do is figure out how to get my dad out of there."

"How are you planning on doing that?" I asked.

"Well, I've been collecting evidence for a while. Any time she hit me, I would take pictures of the bruises and cuts for evidence. Sometimes I would also get her yelling at my father on video. Once I have enough solid evidence, I will take it to the police and get her arrested."

I nodded my head in agreement. To be honest, I didn't know what to say. I've never had a friend in this sort of situation before. Everything was becoming too crazy to wrap my head around.

I also feel really bad that he can't visit his friend in the hospital. Even though his mother kicked him out, I'm assuming she's monitoring everywhere he goes to make sure he doesn't do anything she doesn't want him to do.

"I could always FaceTime you when I visit Parker. I know it's not actually visiting him, but it's better than nothing."

"That would be nice. Have you heard from him today?" Andrew asked.

I shook my head. "No, but I'm going to visit him after school to bring him our history homework. Although, I doubt he'll do it. I'll probably end up doing it for him."

"Just make sure you don't torture him too much." he chuckled.

"How would I torture him?" He just made me really confused. I would never torture him.

"You really are blind. Every time he sees you, his eyes light up, as cheesy as that sounds. Just make sure you don't make him believe he has a chance, especially since you are dating his best friend."

"I won't," I mumbled, avoiding eye contact with Andrew.

I didn't want to look at him, because I was afraid he'd see the look in my eyes. I'm aware that Parker likes me, and I know I'm dating his best friend, but I still care for him.

If these past few days have taught me anything, it's that your feelings toward someone can change in a split second.

-----

What do you think will happen with Blaze and Parker? Andrew and Stephen? Blaze and Scottie?

For Andrew's seen, I debated on whether including this in the story at all, because I don't want him to be the typical gay character who's entire storyline revolves around him being gay and discovering himself. I wanted it to go deeper than that. It's still an important part of Andrew's (and Stephen's) story, but I don't want it to be the main focus.

I want them to be a normal couple who fall in love and face challenges just like any other couple face. With that being said, I tried my hardest to write Andrew's scene well, but if you guys have any suggestions on how I could improve it, feel free to comment them! All feedback is welcome.
