Chapter 21: Why are they here?
After we said goodbye to Parker, Scottie and I walked over to one of those games where you shoot water at a certain spot to win a prize. Personally, I didn't really like these games, but I was willing to compromise.
We sat down at the only empty seats left and paid the guy before grabbing the water guns and preparing to shoot.
"You better watch out Anderson, I kick ass at this game," Scottie declared. "Want to bet? I'll beat you so hard you go running home to your mom crying." Scottie laughed at my comment, and my stomach filled with butterflies. There was something so nerve-wracking about talking with someone you like, and I don't know if this feeling will ever go away.
I hope it doesn't.
The buzzer rang and the game started. Scottie was in the lead and smirked at me. I watched as he pressed harder to make more water come out. Determined to win, I discretely kicked his chair, making him fall over and let go of the water gun.
I managed to get ahead and win the game.
"Not fair!" he exclaimed, getting up and brushing the dirt off of his pants. "I never said you couldn't cheat," I shrugged, walking away with the giant stuffed panda I won as a surprise. Scottie smiled a little then jogged to catch up with me.
"So, what do you want to do now?" he asked. "The rollercoaster," I stated, pointing to the giant steel ride in front of us. I loved them so much. "Uhm, are you sure? Wouldn't you rather play another game or something?" Scottie half-asked.
Weird.
When I looked over at him, he looked really nervous and fidgety. Almost like he was nervous.
"Scottie, I don't know your middle name, Kraze, are you afraid to go on a rollercoaster?"
"No?" he mumbled, but it sounded more like a question than an answer. "You are!" I exclaimed. Oh, this was hilarious. A guy like Scottie was afraid of a measly rollercoaster, yet he wasn't afraid to get tackled by 250 pound linemen on the football field.
"I just don't trust them. I mean, for all I know it will break when we're upside down or going down a drop and I will plummet to my death. I'm not too fond of dying young, there's still so much I want to do," he explained.
"Fair enough, but I promise you that this ride is safe. I've ridden it every year since I was tall enough, and never once has it broken down. I'll be right by your side." I grabbed his hand reassuringly.
"You swear?"
I nodded my head. "Okay," he sighed. My fists pumped in the air. Yes! I had convinced him. Riding this was going to be so fun.
As we made our way over to the back of the line, we made small talk about school, our friends, things like that. "Wait, so if you liked me then, how come you agreed to come to the party with Parker?" Scottie asked.
Some how we had gotten to talking about the party that we went to months ago. We were talking about the games that went on and then he asked me why I came, and I decided to be brave and take the chance to tell him how I felt.
I wasn't too worried though, since Parker told me that Scottie already liked me.
"Well, your idiot of a best friend dragged me along so I would get a chance to hang out with you outside of school."
He raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
"Yup," I said, popping the 'p'.
"Damn, that means we liked each other at the same time, because I've liked you since freshman year."
"Wait, WHAT?" I shouted a little too loudly, because the lady in front of us turned around and glared. "I'm sorry," I whispered to her, but she had already walked away.
"If you had liked me for that long, why did you never say anything?" Scottie was popular, smart, and athletic. He was every girls dream guy, there's no way I would've rejected him. In fact, I probably would've turned bright red before stuttering a 'yes'.
"I don't know, I guess I was just scared that you wouldn't like me back. I was also scared that Parker wouldn't want to be my friend if he found out I liked you. You guys have been fighting for as long as I remembered and I didn't want to lose either of you."
This was the sweetest thing a guy's ever said to me. I was expecting my heart to swell 100 times it's size, my face to start blushing, and my mind to go haywire, but I felt strangely calm.
"Yeah, I get what you mean. Up until a month ago, Parker and I couldn't even be in the same room without fighting some way or another."
"Exactly," he chuckled.
Scottie looked like he was going to say something else, but a hand tapped him on the shoulder.
We had reached the end of the line for the roller coaster sometime in the middle of our conversation. "What are you guys doing here? I figured you'd still be playing games or something." Parker and Sophia were standing behind us, some unused tickets in their hands.
"Oh, well we were going to, but my date convinced me to go on the roller coaster with her." Part of me felt happy that Scottie was referring to me as his date. Maybe soon that can change to his girlfriend.
I glanced over at Parker only to find that he looked bored out of his mind. Odd, I could've sworn he loved the festival as much as I did.
We all talked for a little bit while we waited for the line to move up, and after a few minutes we were at the front. Sophia was excitedly talking to Scottie about something, Scottie looked like he was going to shit his pants, and Parker's expression had shifted from bored to irritated. Damn, he must really hate lines.
"Okay, next group!" The guy working the line announced. I grabbed Scottie's hand to get on the ride, but he stopped me. "I'm not feeling too good Blaze. I think I'm going to sit this one out if that's okay."
"But you promised to go on this with me! I swear I will hold your hand the entire time, and not let you fall to your death."
I heard Parker and Sophia snicker behind me. "I really don't-" his words were cut off by a gurgling in his stomach. "Uh oh," he mumbled before turning away, but not fast enough. He threw up all over Sophia.
"EW!" she shrieked, holding her shirt away from her torso. "How could you do that?" she yelled at him. He looked very sorry, but ran off because he was about to get sick again. "I'm sorry Blaze, but it looks like I have to go take care of my shirt, enjoy the ride without me."
She walked off, shaking her hands every couple seconds to make sure she didn't get any of the chunky liquid on her.
"Well, looks like it's just you and me Anders."
The worker ushered Parker and I onto the ride, where we picked our seats. I managed to snag the seats in the very front, my favorite. We buckled ourselves in and waited for it to start.
The worker pressed a button that started a countdown, and soon we were off. The first part was a slow ascent up a hill, then straight down before going into some twists and turns and a couple loops here and there.
"So how's the date going so far?" Parker asked as we waited to reach the top. "It's going fine. He told me that he's had a crush on me since freshman year."
Parker started coughing. "He has?"
"Yeah, isn't it sweet? I'm hoping he asks me to be his girlfriend soon, since we both like each other and have been on a date." I turned to face him, but I shouldn't have done that.
"But don't you think-AH!" He was cut short by a scream. We dropped down the hill, and I started screaming my lungs out. As we were dropping down the hill, and because of the force of the ride and me turning to face Parker, our lips somehow ended up connecting.
---
As soon as we were off the ride, we staggered over to the booth to check out the photos they took. I forgot that for the first few moments after I get off a roller coaster, my legs are shaking from the ride.
"Hello, would you guys like to purchase one of our keychains with your picture on it?" the lady working the desk asked. Glancing at the screens, I skimmed all the photos till I found ours.
Parker's mouth was placed on the corner of my mouth while be both stared wide eyed at the other, neither one of us knowing what to do. I know we just technically kissed and everything, but Parker looked really funny in the picture. His eyes were really wide and his hair was blowing back so he looked like he had a buzz cut. I started laughing the longer I stared.
Oh who am I kidding, I looked just as funny as him. My mouth isn't wide open, but my face is really red and my eyes look like their about to pop out of their sockets. My mouth was also curled into this weird half frown look.
"I'll take a keychain," Parker said, pulling out his wallet. "Why are you buying it?" I asked. It was a funny picture, but nothing worth keeping. "Because," he stated, " I want to have something to laugh at when I'm sad, and your face always does the trick."
"You-" I raised my hand to slap him, but he swiftly dodged it and handed the lady the money for the keychain.
The lady working the counter took his card and smirked at us. "Can I just say that you guys make the cutest couple ever. I wish I had a boyfriend like him," she said gesturing to Parker.
My eyes bulged. "Him?" I exclaimed a little too loudly. "I would never date him. We're just friends. In fact, I came here on a date with his best friend, but he got sick so he had to go."
"Whatever you say," she sang, and handed Parker back his card along with the freshly printed keychain.
As we walked out, Parker was unusually silent. I, on the other hand, was too busy looking around for Scottie to care. He should've been done by now. There was a bathroom barely 20 feet from the exit of the ride.
When I looked over at one of the near by games, I swear I saw Andrew and Stephen walking together, but by the time my brain registered it was them, they were out of my eyesight. I tried looking around for them some more, but they were nowhere to be found. Why were they here?
Andrew told me that he had a bunch of homework he had to do and Stephen was supposed to be visiting his grandma. Suspicious.
Parker must've seen it too, because I noticed he was looking in the same direction they just were. "Did you see Andrew and Stephen too?" I asked him. "Yeah, but I'm confused because Andrew told me that he had so much homework that he wouldn't be able to hang out all weekend."
"That's what he told me too," I said. I wonder why they were both lying to us. If they wanted to come, they could've just asked. I'm sure Scottie wouldn't have minded turning this into a group hangout, with a date on the side. Speaking of Scottie, he was walking towards us with Sophia on his heels.
She must've found a booth that sells t-shirts, because she was wearing one that read 'I heart Halloween', with a pumpkin in the corner. "Sorry about leaving you Blaze. I thought I would be able to handle it, but I couldn't."
"It's okay. We can always go next time."
After the roller coaster fiasco, we all decided it would be best if we didn't go on any more rides for the time being. Instead, we found a booth that served fried everything and ordered some of our favorite food.
I ordered fried pickles, fried Oreos, and fried Twinkies. Sophia just got an order of fries because apparently she was trying to cut back on how much fried food she eats, and Scottie only got some fried okra because he was trying to be somewhat healthy.
Parker on the other hand, gorged himself. He got fried Oreos, fries, fried grilled cheese, fried ice cream, fried pickles, and fried Twinkies. It was a wonder he didn't get sick after eating all that. Once everyone was stuffed from the food, we walked around and played some more games. None of us were in the mood to go on any more rides, and we didn't want to get sick after the fried food.
Scottie and I walked in front of Sophia and Parker. I think they fell behind on purpose to give us some alone time, and I was grateful for that. This was supposed to be our date, and I've spent more time alone with Parker than I have with Scottie.
"What is your favorite flower?" Scottie asked me out of no where. "I don't really have a favorite flower, but if I had to chose, it'd either be yellow tulips, white lilies, or pink roses."
"That's very specific colors. Any reason behind it?"
There really wasn't one, I just liked those combinations of flowers and colors.
As we walked, Scottie and I gradually got closer to each other. After a couple minutes of discreet arm and hand brushing, Scottie took my hand in his. The first thing I noticed was that it was very warm and comfortable. A little big for my small hands, but still comfy.
It was also rough with callouses from playing football and lifting weights. It felt nice.
Being with Scottie felt nice; I wasn't worrying about anything, there was no pressure, and I felt calm and not at all nervous for some odd reason.
Before I knew it, the night was ending. The festival was closing in half an hour, and we were all beat from walking around for hours on end, playing every single game they had to offer.
Since I rode here with Parker, I assumed I was riding back with him too. But before I could get in the car, Scottie grabbed my wrist and dragged me over to his car. "I can drive you home, you don't have to go with him."
"Thanks for the offer, but I rode here with him. Plus, he already knows my address and he lives pretty close to me. Only a couple of blocks away."
"But he doesn't. Parker lives in the Southern part of the city where all the mansions are. You should know that, you've been to his house before."
"Yeah, I have," I said. "His house is close to mine, we went there to study one time."
"Oh, you're talking about the party house. Yeah, that's not his real house. That's just the house his parents rent for him to hang out with his friends so he can have time away from all his siblings, but he mainly uses it for parties that he throws."
"What?" I muttered. Why did Parker lie to me about where he lives? And if that's not his real house, which one is.
Also, how rich do you have to be for your parents to rent you a house just so you can hang out with your friends by yourselves?
"You said I've been to his house before, but what house are you talking about?"
Scottie gladly answered my question. "The one were our friend group hung out together that one time. You know the house where we played truth or dare and you had to kiss Parker."
A light bulb clicked in my head. "OH! That house! Damn, he's rich. Those houses are worth close to a million dollars. But, why did he lie to me?"
Scottie looked hesitant to answer this question. "I'm telling you this in confidence, so you can't tell anyone else. Okay?"
I promised him I wouldn't tell anyone (but we all know I'm going to blab to Sophia and Stephen as soon as I get home).
"He doesn't like to tell people, because he doesn't want them to use him for his money. He's had some bad experiences in the past, so he doesn't like to share much. Don't tell him I told you any of this."
"My lips are sealed," I motioned to my mouth like I was closing a zipper, locking it, and throwing away the key.
