Preparation
By the time she finally got to her apartment, Alexandria was exhausted.
It had been a day packed with finals and project presentations, and by the time she finally got the chance to enter my bedroom, there was nothing more she wanted to do then kick of her sandals, throw her bookbag across the room and plop facedown into the comfort of her bed.
But alas, she couldn't.
With the end of finals' week peering it's ugly head around the corner, the day for the trip to Athens was peeking out as well.
Alex had finally, finally, convinced both her mom and dad to let her go on a trip abroad, the classics department she was minoring in had posted the summer trip earlier that semester and she grabbed at it desperately. Surprisingly enough, though there did seem to be some hesitation on both their parts at first, they actually relented and agreeed, and now there she was.
With a groan, Alex dropped her bag on the floor near the door and headed straight for her closet, frowning at the open suitcase half filled that greeted her as she walked in.
Nearly every article of clothing she had managed to choose and dump into the suitcase thus far had one thing in comon: black. While it wasn't her favorite color, black was definitely the only color Alex was most comfortable in wearing. Her own mother had expressed her concern over Alex's choice in wardrobe multiple times, and in response, Alex only bought more.
Glancing around at the other clothes still hanging up in my closet, she scanned the retinue of black and the occasional nude or blue, trying to decide what else she would need for this six week trip to Greece.
Just then, her phone rang, and it took a while before she decided to answer it. "Yes?"
"You seem annoyed."
The habit of rolling her eyes was one she had yet to control. "I wonder why Eric."
His deep chuckle rang in her ear before he continued. "Our passports just arrived by the way, do you want me to drop it off at your place or...?"
She tucked her phone between her chin and shoulder and went on to packing her clothes. "No Eric, I'll see you tomorrow in class and pick it up there."
"Don't you want it now? I could just-."
"I'm not giving you my address you bum."
She could almost imagine him throwing his hands in the air in resignation. "Fine, fine. I'll give it to you tomorrow. You have your ticket at least, right?"
"Mhmm, I printed it out yesterday."
"Good. Finished packing yet?"
Alex huffed. "No mom, I haven't finished packing yet."
"Alright, alright, I'll lay off you."
She smiled at that before throwing her go to dress into the suitcase. "Thank you, now hang up the phone and go about being a bum like you usually are, okay?"
"Whatever sweetheart."
"Shut up Eric." And then he hung up.
It was then she remembered her need for a blanket, going over to her bed and picking one of the three blue blankets she had thrown about messily, folding it as tightly as possible to fit the case. Alex wasn't a heavy traveller, and she'd be damned it she was the girl to bring a retinue to bags and suitcases to a school sponsored trip to Greece with a bunch of Classics majors.
On her way back to the closet, it caught her attention that the sun had already managed to set, now replaced by a bright full moon whose rays peirced through my window. She always loved nighttime, and she took that opportunity for a break, sitting on the chair next to the window and staring at the night sky from her room.
An bird flew by and landed on a branch closest to Alex's window, and she quickly recognized it to be an owl, something they rarely saw there in Florida.
It perched itself comfortably on the large branch and hooted, staring at the light in her room before looking around at its surroundings curiously. Alex smiled before letting out a large sigh.
This was her last week in Florida for a while, and she mentally said goodbye to the night veiw she wouldn't be seeing there for another two months.
