Eight
Jeonghan worked diligently for that week and spoke to Mrs. Choi. He knew she was dying to know if Seungcheol was getting interested in him but it didn't look that way. The man barely looked at him and each time he did, it was always cold and distant. Besides whatever attraction Jeonghan once had for him, he was sure already faded. He was only interested in the children.
It was Saturday. Jeonghan packed some of his clothes and personal items. He was going to spend the weekend since the kids would be home. That morning, he went to the house all packed and pressed the doorbell. There was no response so he used his spare key to open the house. Seungcheol jumped in fright when he saw him. He was holding a wine bottle and drinking but he looked really sexy wearing a tight black tanktop and jean trousers, the trouser hugged his frame. Jeonghan could feel a slight bit of attraction simply by looking at him.
"What are you doing here?"
"I'll be staying weekends. I thought your mother told you" Jeonghan said
Seungcheol ran a hand over his hair, frowning "No, my mother didn't tell me and I don't think you can stay for the weekend. I can take care of the kids myself"
Jeonghan just scoffed looking from him to the bottle to the bottle in his hand.
"Drinking this early in the morning?"
He took a deep breath, looking impatient.
"As I said before, mind your business" he grumbled.
At that moment, they heard a loud cry from upstairs. Jeonghan dropped his bag on the living room couch and raced upstairs followed by Seungcheol. The cry was coming from the youngest children's room. Jeonghan looked and saw Chan on the floor surrounded by his brothers. His face was filled with tears as he held his left leg.
"What happened?" Jeonghan asked he knelt to him and held him in his arms.
"He was sleeping then he suddenly fell and started crying," Seungkwan said.
Seungcheol carried Chan. "I'll take him to the hospital"
"I'm coming too"
"No, stay here and look after the other kids," Seungcheol said
"I said I'm coming with you," he said stubbornly.
Seungcheol glared at him but he was unrelenting. Instead, he glanced at the kids.
"They can come with us," he said.
Seungcheol rolled his eyes "I don't think it's that serious"
Jeonghan secretly pinched Vernon and Minghao who was nearer to him.
"Appa, we'll go to the hospital with Chan" They chorused.
Seungcheol sighed "Alright, wash your face brush your teeth," he said. Jeonghan stroke Chan's hair as Seungcheol held the sobbing child. The man looked at him and he looked back. Their eyes met and Jeonghan swore he could feel the rush of electricity all over his body. He hadn't felt this way in a long time. Was he liking this jerk again? He pulled his eyes away first.
"I'm so sorry...I was just really worried about him"
Seungcheol didn't answer. He seemed uncomfortable and just shrugged. The kids were through and they rushed out without eating breakfast because Chan was complaining of pain. The hospital wasn't that far. Seungcheol, Jeonghan, and the children rushed in and a nurse met them.
"What's wrong with your son?" She asked and that question did not fail to grab Jeonghan's attention. Was she referring to them, he and Seungcheol as Chan's parents? But Seungcheol didn't seem to notice. If he did, he didn't care.
"He broke his leg"
Another nurse joined the first one. "Don't worry, we will take of him" she said and they carried the boy away from his arms.
They all sat down waiting. Soon enough, the boys were complaining of hunger.
"Why don't we go to Jimmy's place and eat after we are done here," Jeonghan said. The kids cheered while Seungcheol looked at them confused.
"Your father will pay," Jeonghan said and noticed Seungcheol glaring at him but it didn't shake him one bit. Instead, it amused him. The doctor came out immediately
"Are you the boy's parents?" He said.
Both Jeonghan and Seungcheol looked alarmed. Seungcheol shook his head. "I'm his father. He is just the nanny"
The doctor nodded.
"How is he?" Jeonghan asked.
"He's fine but he broke his left leg. He won't be able to use the leg for at least three weeks. You have to take good care of him"
Seungcheol sighed. "Alright, can we see him?"
"Yes you can"
"Can we take him home?" Jeonghan asked.
"of course, just settle the bill and you can take him home"
"kamshamnida" Both Jeonghan and Seungcheol bowed and the doctor left. They went to see Chan. He had a cast on his leg. His brothers laughed at him and he started to cry but Jeonghan scolded them and comforted him wrapping his arms around the boy.
It pained Seungcheol to see the scene before him but he couldn't deny it felt good seeing his children happy because of Jeonghan. It had been a while since he had seen them like this. A nurse entered with a huge smile on her face.
She looked at Seungcheol "Did you remarry? I'm offended Cheol, you didn't invite me to the wedding" She blurted out making Jeonghan and Seungcheol freeze.
"em...I didn't remarry. He's just the new nanny" Seungcheol muttered
"Really?" She stared at them in disbelief, her eyes assessing how Jeonghan held Chan. Everyone knew that Seungcheol was overprotective of his children. Allowing another person near them meant only one thing. The nurse shook her head. It wasn't her business prying into his private life
"I'm sorry for the misunderstanding," She said.
"There's no problem," Jeonghan said and the nurse went to Chan.
"Alright, you are free to go home now," she said. Chan held out his arms for Jeonghan to carry him. He looked at Seungcheol's hardened expression and thought carefully for a while before he carried the boy.
"Looks like he is very fond of you," the nurse said with a small smile. Jeonghan smiled back and turned to Seungcheol.
"Shall we?" He whispered looking at him. The man just nodded and left as Jeonghan and the kids followed him. Jeonghan stared at Seungcheol's stiff back as they all walked out of the hospital. He wondered what was going on inside his head. He bet he was pining with anger but Jeonghan didn't care. After seeing that image of Seungcheol in the kitchen a few days ago, he decided he was going to keep his promise to the kids and make their father smile again. He was going to do what he wanted to do.
They got to the car. Jeonghan and Chan stayed in front of the car with Scoups while the other kids remained at the back.
"Appa, we're hungry" Minghao complained.
Jeonghan turned to Seungcheol "Let's take them to Jerry's spot, I will give you a complete discount"
Seungcheol said nothing and just started the car. Jeonghan didn't know if he was going to pull up at Jerry's spot or not, with the way his face was set but he did and Jeonghan sighed in relief.
"Get down," He said and everyone began to get out of the car. The children shouted in loud voices as they ran out of the car and entered the eatery with Jeonghan behind them.
Jeonghan led the kids to a table while Seungcheol took his sweet time entering the eatery. Jeonghan spotted his two favorite workers and they looked back at him amazement written on their faces. He waved but they didn't wave back, still in shock over what they were seeing. Seungcheol finally entered and sat on the only empty seat next to Jeonghan, all the while with a scowl on his face.
Jun ran to them holding his notepad gently.
"What are your orders?" He said, deliberately eyeing Jeonghan who only hid a smile. Jeonghan looked at Seungcheol.
"Would you like Kimpab? The kimbap here is pretty tasty"
Seungcheol shrugged "Whatever"
"And Cola!" Seungkwan yelled with a bright smile. Jeonghan smiled at him. He hadn't seen him this happy since that day he came back from school.
"Cola!" Vernon shouted. The kids became rowdy.
"No more noise!" Seungcheol said sternly and they quietened but continued to whisper. Jeonghan looked at Jun "I'll help you with the order" he said
He got up and looked at Seungcheol. "I'll be back"
Seungcheol didn't even turn his head but when he was walking away, Jeonghan knew he was watching him. When they were out of sight, Jun pulled Jeonghan to one side of the kitchen.
"What happened? What the hell did you do?"
"Nothing!"
Wonwoo joined them " What do you mean nothing? We know that man Seungcheol. Ever since his husband died, he never brings anyone to the restaurant to eat with him and his kids" He shook Jeonghan "What sorcery did you use on the man"
Jeonghan laughed. "It's just a plan. I'm trying to bring him out of his shell. I've not even come close"
Wonwoo stared at him "what do you mean?"
Jeonghan sighed placing his hands on his waist "That man is the most difficult person I have ever had to deal with and also, he's a jerk"
Wonwoo and Jun gasped.
"Why do you say so?"
"He's been treating me coldly ever since I started working in his house. He doesn't even like it when I'm close to his kids" He put up a determined smile
"But I'm Yoon Jeonghan, there's nothing I won't be able to do"
Wonwoo and Jun looked at him in a daze. "You're absolutely right"
Jun and Jeonghan took the food and drinks they had ordered and started walking back to the Chois. Jun said something funny and Jeonghan laughed. He noticed that Seungcheol was looking at them weirdly, most especially at Jun.
Jeonghan sat down. "Thank you Jun," He said giving his colleague a nice smile. Jun bowed flamboyantly
"Enjoy", He said and left. They began to rush their food quickly.
"You and that guy seem quite close" Seungcheol suddenly said.
"Yeah, we were friends in college. He was the one who introduced me to the eatery" He said absently but then froze when he realized that Seungcheol had just asked him a personal question. He looked at Seungcheol to see if he could read his expression but as usual, he was cold as ice but his body language said a different story. He was curious.
"Why did you ask?" Jeonghan said. Seungcheol didn't reply and just ate his food quietly. Jeonghan shrugged and continued his meal. They finished their food and the children laughed in satisfaction. Jun returned with a wide smile on his face.
"Are you done?"
Jeonghan nodded "yes we are, thank you"
Seungcheol paid Jun and he saw him looking at Jeonghan.
They smiled at each other and Seungcheol caught their interactions.
"Let's go!" He said roughly and started to leave with Chan in his arms and the other children behind him.
"Wait!" Jeonghan shouted after him but he didn't answer. He hugged Jun.
"Bye, I'll call you"
"Fighting!" Jun said and Jeonghan rushed after Seungcheol and the kids.
Seungcheol got the kids inside the car and also entered, ready to begin driving when Jeonghan ran into the car out of breath.
"Really, were you planning to leave me" He yelled
Seungcheol smirked and Jeonghan scoffed.
"Did you just smirk at me?"
Seungcheol rolled his eyes "Will you just keep quiet and put on your seatbelt?"
Jeonghan heaved and put on his seatbelt silently cursing Seungcheol in his mind. He couldn't believe he was going to drive off without him. What a jerk.
Seungcheol started the car and Jeonghan repeatedly checked on Chan to see if he was okay because the car was really small for seven of them.
"You should get a bigger car, perhaps a Sienna that can fit all of us"
"There's nothing wrong with the car"
Jeonghan nodded "True but Chan is injured and he could hurt more because of the car"
Seungcheol took a deep breath "I'll think about it"
Jeonghan felt touched that he was at least considering his advice. They passed a supermarket and he remembered he needed to purchase some things.
"Stop!" He shouted and the car screeched to a halt. Seungcheol turned angry eyes at him.
"What the hell Jeonghan"
"Sorry" he whispered. "Get me five thousand won. I need to get some things for the house"
"What?"
Jeonghan just gave him a straight face and Seungcheol sighed then brought out his wallet and brought out some cash. Jeonghan left the car as soon as Seungcheol had parked in front of the supermarket. They waited for quite a while until he saw Jeonghan rushing out of the supermarket carrying some bags but with a man chasing after him.
"Yah, at least let me know your name?" Seungcheol heard the man behind Jeonghan shout.
"Yeobo (Honey)" Jeonghan shouted towards him.
Yeobo? Seungcheol thought he hadn't heard well. Jeonghan opened the door and tossed the bags to the kids as he entered. The man paused and looked at Seungcheol and the kids. He bowed his head.
"I'm so sorry, I thought you were lying about being married"
Jeonghan threw his arms over Seungcheol's neck.
"I told you I'm married and these are my children"
Seungcheol looked at him wide-eyed. The man bowed again. "I'm sorry, forgive me!" he said and scampered off.
Jeonghan still had his arm draped over Seungcheol's neck so he shrugged him off.
"What do you think you are doing?" he screamed at Jeonghan almost spoiling his eardrum. Jeonghan reddened.
"I'm sorry but the man wouldn't leave me alone. Immediately he saw me, he just kept on saying nonsense. I tried to stop him but he continued so I had no choice but to tell him I was married to you and the kids were ours"
Seungcheol shook his head. "Gosh!"
jeonghan shrugged. "This happens to me all the time"
Seungcheol looked at him. "Don't you think you are too full of yourself?"
Jeonghan smiled cutely. "I'm so beautiful that I have so many admirers. You are the only one who is blind to my beauty"
Seungcheol shook his head "You are getting too far Jeonghan"
Jeonghan just sighed and brought out the remaining change. He handed it to Seungcheol and turned his full attention to Chan who giggled as he tickled his belly.
"There is ice cream in one of the bags. Eat it before it gets cold" jeonghan shouted and the kids were happy as they rummaged through the bags. They found them and handed one to Chan who sucked his with pleasure.
Seungcheol couldn't pull his eyes away from Jeonghan. He was having an uncomfortable feeling in his chest by merely watching him. He gripped the steering wheel tightly and drove without another word.
As soon as they were back home, the kids ran upstairs to wash up. Seungcheol also went to take a bath while Jeonghan bathed Chan. As soon as Seungcheol finished bathing, he received a call from the office and it was urgent. Now more than ever, he needed the promotion so that he could at least spend weekends at home. He dressed and came downstairs. He paused when he heard his pure laughter. He slowly went to the kitchen and stood at the door watching the interaction between his fourth son and Jeonghan.
"It's tasty right?" Jeonghan said and Seungkwan rolled his head.
'Do you think your father will like it?" He said and Seungkwan nodded. Jeonghan laughed. Seungkwan turned and saw his father.
"Appa!" he yelled and Jeonghan looked up at him. His smile faded when he saw him in his work clothes and briefcase.
"Oh, are you going somewhere?"
"I have urgent work in the office"
Jeonghan nodded "When will you be home?"
There was silence. "I don't know, don't wait for me," he said. He flashed a sweet smile at Seungkwan and left. Jeonghan didn't know why but he felt bad.
That night, Seungcheol returned home late. The work had kept him late but strangely, he didn't want to stay over. He had wanted to come straight home. He could hear the sound of the TV and went to the living room only to find Jeonghan asleep on the couch. It looked like he had waited for him. Seungcheol found himself smiling. When he realized himself, he shook his head and went to Jeonghan. He put off the TV and then tapped him lightly on the shoulder but he just purred like a cat. He had to admit, the scene in front of him was pretty cute. He went to his room and grabbed a blanket. He returned and wrapped it around him. He found himself staring at him longer than he liked.
"I'm so beautiful that I have so many admirers. You are the only one who is blind to my beauty"
When he thought of that, he almost laughed and then the image of Jihoon appeared in his mind. The smile on his face before he was engulfed in flames. He stepped back from Jeonghan shaking as he ran upstairs. He fell on his bed. He wasn't going to fall for anyone else, least of all Yoon Jeonghan. He had made that promise.
