Chapter 17
Caleb eventually realised his mistake and his cheery expression dropped.
"Shit, I swear I didn't mean it like that. I mean there weren't that many, I mean, I'll just shut up now."
If I hadn't been as hurt and embarrassed to be in the doctor's office after a panic attack, I would have laughed at how cute his stammering was, but in that moment, I couldn't care less. I dismissed him by looking away from him and out of the window. I wondered what mom and Alexander were thinking, they must be worried that I hadn't returned home yet.
"I need to go home." I said, looking at Caleb when I didn't get a reply.
He stood at the far end of the bed and looked absolutely frightened as I was going to leave him. Confused, I raised an eyebrow, until I realized he thought I meant home, home.
"I mean my house here at the reserve, I need to get back to Alexander and my Mom."
He seemed to recover and nodded absent-mindedly. A few seconds later, a doctor entered the room, looking rather flushed.
"Hello, Luna, so pleased to meet you. I'm dr. Daniels, I was informed you had an attack of some sort?" He introduced himself without looking at me.
"Oh no, I'm not the Luna, you must be mis-"
Growling interrupted my objections which caused me to glare at Caleb. I had never agreed to anything yet. As far as I was concerned I was anything but Luna material, mate or not. A Luna can't be a weak individual, she's the pack's mother, strong for everyone else, not a liability. I didn't stop glaring until Caleb cowered away from me and cleared his throat to ease the tension.
In return, I looked back at the doctor, crossing my arms in front of my body defensively.
"Dr. Daniels, I assure you, there's nothing wrong with me, just a minor panic attack, nothing to worry about."
The doctor gave me a half smile and nodded.
"Well, let me be the judge of that and then you can be on your way again."
Attempting to convince these two of something else, seemed impossible, so I sat back and allowed the doctor to examine me. He moved around me a lot, trying to avoid touching me as much as possible thanks to a certain someone who couldn't stop growling. This brought a grin on my face. Serves him right, stupid Alphawolf.
Eventually, a frown appeared on the doctor's face, which in return brought a frown to my face.
"Your wolf is dormant, isn't it?" he tried gently.
I shook my head in denial. "I don't have one."
He patted my hand and shook his head in reply.
"No, no you definitely do, I can feel it deep beneath the surface, what happened?"
"That's rather private, don't you think?" I asked defensively.
The doctor opened his mouth again, but this time Caleb interfered.
"That's enough." he said, edging closer to me again.
The doctor didn't hesitate to shut his mouth and nodded, casting his head down.
"Certainly, Alpha, my apologies."
"So, she's fine? The attack wasn't anything to worry about?"
"No, Alpha, just make sure she avoids stressful situations."
"Like a doctor not minding his own business?"
I swear the doctor nearly yelped and he quickly left the room. I couldn't help but giggle a little and when Caleb turned to look at me, the frown he was sporting, was quickly replaced by a smile of his own.
"Alright then, let's get out of here."
I gladly took him up on that offer and jumped off the bed and out of his reach before he could even think about carrying me again.
"Great, I need to get home!" I started skipping away hurriedly, but lean fingers wrapped around my wrist and pulled me back gently.
"Wait." he whispered, as he turned me around and wrapped his arms around my waist. I wanted to object to the closeness, but he was already leaning down, putting his nose in my hair and inhaling.
"I wish you'd just go home with me, instead of that house, but you won't, will you?" he murmured, almost desperately holding on to me.
I gently unwrapped myself from him and took a step back, not meeting his eye as I told him:
"If we're going to do this, I need to take things slow, I can't feel the bond the way you can, for me this isn't instant love so it will need to be build and forged and only time can do that for me, I'm afraid.. Please don't be mad, or hurt, I'm really trying here, but it's so hard."
I dared to look up at him, but he just looked so broken that I turned around so I didn't have to see it anymore, like the coward I was.
"I'll see you soon, Caleb, I promise."
I couldn't hear his reply anymore as I quickly ran away from him, back home.
