"again," your dad says as you groan, getting off the floor. training. you're fourteen years old and you're training. 

why? because you wouldn't stop complaining to your dad that your big brother could train, and you couldn't. 

i honestly think you shoulda kept your mouth shut but that's just me. and your dad is training you harder than he's trained sky.

you duck his staff, it almost hitting your face as you flip backwards but then the same staff gets hit in your stomach. you fall to the dirt with a groan and your hand on your face. you look up to see your dad staring back down at you. 

"again," you get back up again, twisting your spear around, hitting your dad in the stomach. he doesn't dodge it and you feel triumphant. 

but before you know it, your face is flat on the grassy field. 

from the house, sky watches you. seeing himself in you. the way he struggled when he was young. he winces when you stumble on the floor, your dad pointing his staff towards you.

"why do we train?" saul asks you, poking you with the staff. you look at him confused. you are a kid. the only reason why you trained was for fun. or impress your crush. "we train to protect and keep people safe,"

"then who did you need to keep safe?" you ask, not knowing the sadness that saul had in that question. he blinks. but you didn't realize. "you trained for a very long time. was it my mama? or my father?"

"i train," saul starts, helping you up. "for you. and sky," he says. you smile at him. of course, he did. he's the best father you could ask for. even if he adopted you. "because i love you both? now why do start to train?"

you lay on the floor, screaming out to saul's dead body. sky beside you, both of you in pain.
