Chapter 1

He hits me again and again. I scream out in pain, my wings wrapped around my body, but he pulls them away and hits me again.

"Why are you such a freak!?!" My father yells. He hits me again.

"STOP!" I scream and magic explodes from my body. I didn't know how it happened, but I was thankful it did. I had time to escape.

My father was thrown into the wall and knocked unconscious.I got up quickly and pulled a torn jacket over my wings. They are considered freakish in my town, but from all the stories I've read, they are a symbol of elven royalty. I'm not royalty, but I wish I was. My life would be so much better.

I run out onto the streets of Elvienea and look around frantically. I notice an alleyway and I run down it, trying to avoid the people. My jacket catches on a tree branch and it is torn off, revealing my wings. People scream in terror and I keep running before the guards find me.

Suddenly, a net shoots onto me and elven guards run up to me. I glare at them. One of the guards speaks to the others.

"She is only a kid. We should let her go." The other guards look at him with anger.

"Why? She is a monster! Look at those wings!" I struggle against the net and scream at the guards, my eyes glowing yellow, but I didn't notice. The guards push me down and look at my eyes in horror.

"What is going on with her eyes?" The other guards shrug and look at me with confusion. Magic explodes around me again, this time more powerful, knocking all the guards unconscious and definitely triggering a stronger response from the kingdom.

I look at the guard in horror of what I have done. I back away slowly and turn around, running toward the kingdom's border. More guards are chasing me now and people run in different directions, some are knocked out cold, others are seriously injured.

I run for a while. I eventually find myself in what looks like a forest. The sky darkens and I can see the moon.

I am hungry, dirty, hurt, and it's raining. No one is around.

I sit down next to a tree and pull myself into a small ball. I cry for hours until I fall asleep. I fall asleep in the cold, wet forest. The moon is full and the wind is strong. I wake up to thunder and lightning, a tree falling, and a branch hitting my back. I can't move, it's too heavy. The branch hurts me and I try my hardest to free myself. The thunder makes the situation even more terrifying and I scream out in pain and fear.

I try to scream but I choke on my words. I panic even more as the rain gets stronger and the winds become even more rough.

I see something in front of me, a silhouette, of someone holding out something. I can't tell what it is or who it is, but I hope someone is going to help me. I reach out to the silhouette but before I can grab it, I fall unconscious from the pain and the cold.

The silhouette approaches my unconscious body. She has wings, pointy ears, and horns. She has a kind yet stern look on her face. She seems sad and sympathetic towards my pain. She is also wet from the rain.

"Poor child, what have they done to you?"

She picks me up in her arms and puts my head on her shoulder.

"My name is Amora."

She begins to walk back to her house, gently carrying me.

"Please rest."

Amora brings me to a soft bed, with covers as warm as a fire.

"I'm sure you're hungry. If you want, I can make you something to eat."

Amora's voice is sweet and motherly, just the way I wish my mother could have been. She seems to be a good person, but I don't know if I can trust her yet.

When I wake up I look at Amora with fear in my eyes. I curl up into a ball and put my head in my knees. My wings wrap around me to protect myself. Amora puts a soft blanket over me and gently strokes my wings.

"Are you okay my dear?"

Amora's voice is sweet but stern, like what a mother would sound like.

"Do you have a name?"

Her voice sounds very motherly, but has a stern edge to it. It isn't scary, but it is firm, if that makes sense.

"L-Lo-Loké..." I stutter on my words.

"Well Loké, do you like that name?"

She looks at me in a comforting way, trying to calm me down, but I cant. I am too scared. I feel sad and fearful of this unknown person, yet she is treating me more like a mother than my own biological mother did.

I shake my head in response to Amora's question.

"Then what would your preferred name be?"

Amora gives me a smile and looks at me with kind eyes.

   I shrug.

"Well, I'm still going to find you a nice name. How about something that fits you?"

Amora sits down next to me and looks at me, smiling.

"Would you like to learn about names?"

Amora talks to me like I'm an adult, not like other people would talk to a child and I nod.

"Ok, names describe people. They represent them in a way, so people can tell what the person is like from their name."

Amora pauses and looks at me.

"Do you have any ideas on what you want your new name to be?"

Amora looks at me. She looks scary to a young child, but her voice is so motherly and soothing. It puts my mind at ease.

"If you don't know, I am more than happy to help you think of a name, ok?"

Suddenly, I fold over and scream out in pain. Yellow magic pulses in and out of my body. My face contorted in pain and I let out light screams. Amora jumps back, looking terrified. The magic is unknown to her.

"What's wrong?! What can I do!"

Amora grabs a blanket and covers me up, looking at me with concern and sadness. She strokes my head. My magic burns through the blanket and  I hold my head in my hands with the magic pulsing in and out of my skin. Amora looks panicked.

"What do I do?!"

She is freaking out and she  has no idea how to control whatever is happening. After a few minutes, my magic goes back into my skin and I go back to sitting on the couch. Amora sits down next to me.

"Are you alright there sweetheart? What was that?"

Amora has a soft and warm voice, one that is soothing. She seems a little shaken up after seeing the magic. I put my head back on my knees and shrug.

"It's alright, nothing to worry about."

Amora pulls me closer to her and strokes my hair.

"Do you want to rest for now?"

Amora picks me up and holds me close, gently moving me to a bed and sitting me on the cushions.

"How about you get some rest? Maybe you'll feel better in the morning."

I lay my head down and close my eyes. Amora leaves the room, so I am not bothered, and closes the door. She looks worried. The house is peaceful and calm, and feels safe, but Amora's heart is racing. The bed is soft, and there are beautiful paintings on the wall. I see the moon peek in through the curtains. It's a beautiful night. I slowly drift off to sleep, with your mind at ease for the first time in a while.

I start having terrible dreams. In my dreams, I remember. I remember the times I  got hurt. All the times my father hurt me. I cry and hold my head in pain. I remember all the times my father yelled at me, told me to be "normal." The times he hit me. The times he humiliated me. I try not to think of it, and keep crying. I am crying and screaming in the dream, causing an eruption similar to the one I felt when my father was hitting me. Magic explodes around me and destroys most of the house. I notice what happened. I am terrified at what just happened and my first response is to run down the mountain.

Amora hears the magic explosion and sees her house destroyed. The moon is full and Amora runs to investigate what happened and tries to find me. I run quickly and Amora follows right behind, screaming for me to come back and screaming out my name.

"Loké! Loké come back!"

She screams my name over and over again, but I refuse to turn around. Amora is chasing me, running, and almost crying. My wings break out of the binds and drag behind me as I skid down the mountain. Amora runs faster and tries to catch up with me. She is just behind me and is scared that I might hurt her. She isn't mad or upset- she just wants to help me. Her eyes start to tear up.

"Loké, you're scaring me!"

Amora yells over to me. She is running as fast as she can now, and is slowly catching up. Magic twirls around my wrists like snakes and I use it to blast myself into the trees. I run through the trees' branches. Amora continues to chase after me,, almost out of energy now. She keeps yelling out my name for me to stop.

"Loké please stop! I'm trying to help you!"

Amora shouts as she runs after me. Her brain is telling her that I am dangerous, and that she can't let me away. If she loses sight of me, there's no telling what I might do.

"I'm sorry! I really am! Please stop!"

   Amora sounds desperate now.

I get to the edge of the trees and jump down and into the Mesa biome. I dart into one of the Mesa's many caves before Amora can see where I went. Amora sees me  for a split second, before I dart into a cave and disappear. She stops to catch her breath for a second, and when she can breath again she continues after me. She's desperate to find me, so she looks into every single cave in the area, hoping to find me, but she can't.

Eventually, Amora gives up and turns around to return to the destroyed house.

I sigh as she leaves and I mutter something in elvish. A yellow flame lights in my hand and illuminates my path. I start walking through the cave, hoping to find an exit. The caves seem to have endless tunnels. There are different ways I can choose, some left and some right. After walking for what feels like hours, I see the tiniest sliver of candlelight. It feels like I have walked forever. I can hear my footsteps echo through the cave as I run to where I saw the light.

I find a ladder and trapdoor leading out of the cave. I climb up the ladder and come out into a room with architecture I barely recognize as Mezalian. I look around and realize that I am in the Mezalian Materal Palace.

"Oh no, no, no, no...."
