Okay so first off archer EMIYA (ya know what just Emiya is good) is from an alternate timeline, he's specifically an alternate version of Shirou Emiya who also happens to be the person he wants to kill.

His heart is an amulet for some reason??

Bc cu chulainn stabbed his original heart and the amulet was used to act as his heart....GEE THANKS A LOT FATE

Anyway so because alternate timeline happened certain events changed and after the holy grail war ended he became a freelance magus wanting to be a hero of justice

However that failed miserably.

See, he learned of a catastrophe that would cause the deaths of 100 or so people so he was like nope ima stop that and made a contract with the world (Alaya). He'd become a heroic spirit and save those people! And more in the future! After he died.

Well the thing happened, he was framed as the mastermind and executed.

Then he had to deal with "killing one to save the many" and things like that which opposed his moral of saving everyone

At some point he began to think that if he was summoned to a timeline where shirou Emiya existed then if he could kill that past self he could then erase his own existence.

It's basically an extremely complicated self-death plan.

Also this is a very basic rundown of his backstory I do not have the energy to go into full depth at this moment in time
