*Spoiler alert for Alpha Faye!!! Read at own risk*
~Zayla
The gardens around the edge of the house are much more magnificent than the front. This looks more personal, each colour more brilliant than the last. Stepping past each hybrid plant, I see a figure hunched over a flower bed.
I assume this is Faye. Their long blonde, almost white hair is swept into a high ponytail, tied together by string. A hat is shoved over her head, keeping the sun off. She wears a pretty blue dress, decorated with hand painted yellow flowers. It's all very picturesque and quaint.
"Excuse me," I exclaim, "Are you Alpha Faye."
She startles, which only causes me to do so also. She twists around, squinting in the glare of the sun. She has a smudge of dirt on her chin, which she wipes away carelessly with the clean side of her bright yellow gardening glove.
"Oh I'm sorry for the fright. I didn't expect someone to come up behind me," she says, plucking earphones out of her ears. I stare at the thin cords leading up to the speakers.
"You're listening to music. I haven't done so in what seems like forever," I murmur.
What am I talking about? She must think I'm crazy.
"Why don't you come and sit down and listen to mine?" she offers, patting the space beside her. She has a small blue and white checked cloth layen out in front of the flower bed she was working on. Curious, I sit beside her, my knees almost getting lost in the overbearing petals weighing the bud of the flowers down. This isn't anything normal.
She unplugs the earphones, and lets the music play aloud. It's foreign, but beautiful. There's no denying the sound of soft, gentle voices mixing together to create a perfect chorus of music.
"What is it?" I ask gently.
"A few songs from local singers," Faye tells me, pulling her gloves off to lay them on the ground beside her. "Beautiful isn't it?"
I sigh softly. "Very. I can barely explain it."
Faye smiles, creasing her flawless skin with a few fine lines. There's hardly fault on her. Something about her is enchanting, which I assume is to do with her being an Alpha. She caresses the petal of one of her flowers in front of us while the music plays. It's a has a mellow orange sunset centre, which fades out into a vivid red edge.
"It's soothing to listen to while I garden," she exclaims.
"I'm sorry, this probably seem weird. A complete stranger walks up to you without any kind of introduction," I say, shaking the fog of music out of my hair. "I'm Zayla."
"Ah yes, T has mentioned you before," she says, "I'm Faye."
I can feel her looking at me. She has these piercing green eyes that are unrelenting. I'm afraid that if I look too long, I'll notice how emerald they are. Or maybe I already have. She is intimidating, that's it. Because sitting beside perfection is not something I could ever get used to.
"You're very beautiful, if that isn't strange for me to say," I tell her, before I have time to consider what I'm saying.
"Not at all. So are you," she smiles.
"You probably get told that so often you dismiss it," I say, remarking upon the way she easily brushes the compliment off as if it's nothing. When someone compliments me, I blush bright crimson, and embarrass myself to no end.
She shrugs slightly. "It's only a compliment if the person giving it truly means it."
"You're too good for T."
There's a shock of silence. They are mates. Yes. So why did I say that? Maybe because when I think of T, I think of a manipulative prick who has a way with words. I'm not sure what it is about him, but he makes me nervous, and I can't stand it. And he admitted to being the kind of guy to kill people. And Fate expects me to trust him?
"I'm sorry, I don't know why I said that. It is completely none of my business why you're with T. I mean, your mates," I say quickly, covering my tracks with a thin layer of dirt
She tilts her head, watching me, before she turns back to her flowers.
"Perhaps we are mates, but not everyone makes the decision to be with their mate. It's not always that Destiny makes the best decisions," she tells me. I believe that. I've heard the stories, even if choosing your mate is a trend back in the Devotion Pack. As terrible as that may be.
"Is it intrusive to ask what it is about him you like so much."
When these words come out of my mouth, I realise how foolish they are.
"I know he probably seems sly and rather hard to crack at first. But we went through a lot. It got to the point where life without him seemed more grim than with him in it. Despite our problems, there was a revelation that he was the only one who really understood me. It's strange how things work," she tells me.
When she explains it to me, a warm glow happens upon her features. True, untainted love in its purest form.
"You look sad," she notices, making me flinch slightly out of my thinking stupor. I hadn't realised my thoughts had translated into my expression.
"It's stupid, don't worry about it."
"Well I'm curious, and nothing, at least in my Pack, is stupid," she says.
I swallow uncomfortably. Everyone I've met recently seems to realise how I feel about mates; especially Fate. It's unnerving, but at least sitting beside Faye, in this burning hot sun, I notice a feeling of understanding. Her relationship clearly has been difficult, so perhaps she gets it.
"I've always wanted a relationship like my parents. You may remember them - Jasper and Thea," I tell her. She's an Alpha, she would surely know the story. Almost everyone does, simply for its tragedy.
"Of course. I'm sorry about the loss," she says gently, eyebrows furrowing slightly.
"It's okay. But there isn't a day where I don't wish I had a mate. Especially one that could love me," I admit.
I'm not sure why I'm being so honest right now. It feels good to vent and say it myself rather than have Fate say it for me, and use it against me. I may barely know Faye, but I trust that she wouldn't say a word to anyone else. I'm not sure why, either. Just a small hunch.
"I completely understand," Faye says smoothly. "If it makes any difference, I think you'll find the perfect person for you one day."
"You really think so?" I ask, as if the hope that she has for me is all that I can have for myself.
"I'm fairly positive."
I smother the smile that plays at my lips. There's no point getting caught up in Faye's words. Perhaps she means them, but that doesn't mean I should. They only way I would be able to find my mate is if I wasn't tied to a deal for the next a million years or however long he has planned.
"By the way, I apologise for intruding. You're doing a beautiful job," I note, pointing out to the garden she has built. I'm not lying either. The vivid colour shaded by trees almost blinds my eyes.
"Thank you. I was about to come inside anyways. I'm sure you and Fate would like something to eat," she says sweetly.
She glides to her feet. It's the only way to describe her grace. She offers me a hand, which I take, stumbling into my own standing position. My knees are slightly red from kneeling, and my face is puffy from breathing in all this pollen. And Faye, well, she looks completely untouched and unfazed by everything in this world.
"I think he's talking to his brother right now," I tell her, following her as she picks her way carefully through the flowers. I try my best not to crush any of the vibraint petals.
She takes my hand. "Perfect, then we can gossip about them."
"Really?"
"Sure. Fate is basically my brother in law. Tell me there isn't something that you would like to know about him. T and I once spent a month in his acquaintance after our mating ceremony," she tells me. My mind instantly wanders to glorious places of information and understanding.
We walk around the side of the house, toward the massive entrance. Not only is her garden beautiful, so is her home.
"Must have been insufferable," I mutter, as she leads me into a small kitchen, finally letting go of my hand. I know what it is like to live with Fate. Sure, he keeps to himself and hardly ever bothers me, but just knowing he is around makes me uncomfortable.
"You would think," Faye says, opening the fridge. She turns, holding something in her hand. "Apple?"
I take it, rubbing the cold away with my sleeve. "Sure."
"He kept to himself most of the time. Always drank the same drink, always wore the same seven outfits, and never, never spoke of his past, or his work," Faye tells me. She's telling the truth, because I've noticed it too. I've just never thought about it this much until Faye mentioned it herself.
"Does T ever mention anything?"
Faye pulls a bottle of milk out of the fridge and shrugs. "Never. He often tells me it's Fate's business, not ours. But it always makes me wonder what he's hiding, you know?"
I think that all the time. All the time.
"Yeah. I guess I do."
"I'm naturally curious though. I suppose it doesn't bother those who don't like digging under the surface," Faye tells me.
I watch her poor the milk into a glass and place it on the island bench. She doesn't say another word, while I consider what she is saying. I'm slightly intrigued by what she is doing, though. She opens the fridge again, and pulls out some cooking all wrapped up. As she unwraps them, she places each one on a plate. I take a bite out of my apple curiously.
"Cookies and milk?" I decide to voice.
"Sure. Fate's favourite."
My mouth nearly falls open in surprise. "You know that?"
"Sure, I know the surface level things about Fate. You've been living with him for months, and you haven't noticed?" She asks, looking genuinely concerned. I've been so caught up in everything, I barely notice what he eats.
"Oddly enough, no, I haven't," I tell her, leaning against the bench while I chew my apple.
"See, if you pay attention, even if it's not much, it can reveal a lot of information about someone," she says, watching me for a long, silent moment. "Like how you part your hair in the middle, and tuck the right side behind your ear when you're thinking."
Reflex allows me to tilt my head so my hair falls out, covering the right half of my face again.
"That's crazy."
"It's not as tough as you think," she says brightly, pulling the string from her hair. I watch the blonde trestles cascade down her back as she does so. I subconsciously touch my own brunette strands. The colour is what I developed from my mother's side.
I decide to give what she is saying a try. When she reaches up, shaking her hair out at its roots, I watch the way her shawl that covers her dress slightly pulls down at her wrist. And I notice a dark swirling pattern tattooed into her skin.
"You have a tattoo. It kind of shimmers in the sunlight," I noticed, seeing what looks like a slight bit of glitter there.
She frowns slightly, sliding the plate of cookies and the glass of milk across the table to where a vacant chair is pushed in.
"Right. It's not a tattoo."
Before I could question her, T and Fate wander into the room. T looks slightly troubled, a shadow looming over his features. Fate almost instantly spots the food on the bench, and slides into the seat in front of it.
"Faye," he says warmly. "You know me so well."
T comes up behind Faye to kiss her gently on the cheek. "Hello beautiful."
"What were you two talking about?" Faye asks, as Fate picks up a cookie and takes a bit. I watch him do so, seeing if I can spot anything about him that I hadn't noticed before. But he's a shield. This isn't as easy as I hoped it would be.
"A possible proposition," Fate says.
"You make it sound dirty, brother," T muses, leaning against the bench. Faye slaps his side playfully. "I was joking, my love."
"What's this you're thinking of, Fate?" Faye reiterated.
Faye's eyes suddenly land on mine, and I shiver. Why am I so on edge? "A gift for Zayla."
"Such as?" I question.
Fate and T exchange a glance, before T raises an eyebrow at his brother, who takes a sip of his milk, and wills him to continue.
"We want to bring your father back from the dead."
