~Zayla

"Well," Cian says, clapping his hands together. "That was interesting."

That strangely accented voice is the first sound so break through the ringing in my ears. I'm too scared to open my eyes again, knowing the last thing I saw was the house rippling around us, ready to explode. I'm completely untouched, no debris touching me. I'm not so sure about everyone else.

"Zayla, are you okay?" I hear Fate say. I can feel his hands on my shoulders, shaking me gently. Tentatively, I open my eyes to survey the damage.

I'm surprised to see the walls, the ceiling and all the furnishings of the house have disappeared. Vanished, as if they never existed. I'm dumbfounded, seeing the floorboards beneath my feet, but no other structure to shield us from the morning sun, and slight blustery wind.

"I'm fine," I breath, brushing hair billowing across my face away. I eye my brother, skin drained of colour, mouth slightly agape. "What about you, Zaid?"

"What just happened?" he questions, swaying slightly on his feet.

I'm sure he's seen a lot as Alpha, but never something like that. I didn't intend for him to brought into this, but I had to see him. I assume Fate is going to take me away again, and I won't see him until I've completed all these missions for him. Hopefully this will be the last I have to deal with Cian.

"That's a great question," Cian says lightly, unbothered by the whole event. "Zayla? I think you have a little explaining to do."

"How am I supposed to know? The whole house is gone," I snap, motioning to the space around us. Luckily this home isn't near a street, otherwise we would have a lot of explaining to do. An Alpha, a disheveled female, a blue haired immortal and a very sour, golden haired immortal all standing on the base structure of a house.

"Clearly," Cian says with an eyeroll. "Lost your voice dear Fate?"

When all turn to glance at Fate, who is staring at me. No one here knows him like I do, and I can tell he's deep in thought. His eyebrows are slightly furrowed, a crease etched into his forehead.

Finally, he speaks. "I'm just thinking. It seems Zayla has harnessed some of her parents power."

All of a sudden, the numbness that had encapsulated my entire body seems to wear off. It is then that I notice a sudden burst of pain in my hands. Glancing down, I see the palms of my hands are bright, angry red. They burn, like the blood underneath had been set alight.

"My palms are burning," I say frantically, turning the up for everyone to see. Cian grimaces and turns away, while both Fate and Zaid look beyond concerned.

"We need water to soak them in until the burning ceases," Fate instructs. He glances around, as if looking for a tap to run. Naturally, he finds nothing but a rather empty and unfurnished home. "However, it doesn't seem as if we are going to find any here."

Zaid's jaw clenches, like he wants to say something.

"There's a river close to here," he grumbles. "I'll take her."

"Why don't we all go? I don't think any of us are about to let Zayla out of our sights right now," Cian expresses. His expression and tone is rather mocking, however, he's most likely right. Zaid doesn't want me to leave the mortal realm, and Fate isn't going anywhere without me. Who knows what Cian wants.

Zaid says reluctantly, looking between Cian and Fate. "Fine, but when we are done, all you immortals are leaving."

"You may have already noticed, Zaid, that your sister is one of us now," Fate points out. I lower my gaze to the floor. "And I'm afraid she will be returning with me. Cian, however, will be on his way."

Cain narrows his eyes. "Debatable."

"Non negotiable," Fate says dismissively.

"My hands feel like all my skin is peeling off," I snap loudly, catching everyone's attention again. "If you would mind, I'm going to the river now."

Everyone exchanges glances, but mutually agrees. Zaid is the first to move, hopping off the main structure of the house into the grass. I run up to catch up to him, folding my hands behind my back. If only I could expel this pain. It's almost throbbing through my veins.

"Are you okay? What just happened?" Zaid asks.

I turn around, checking to see that Fate and Cain are following. "I don't know. Our parents gave their powers up to me, and I haven't had control of them. This is the first I've really seen of them in their full form."

"How has Fate been treating you?" Zaid asks anxiously. Clearly it's something that has been worrying him while I have been gone. I'm even unsure of how long I have been away. Time is hard to gage in the immortal lands. "When are you coming home?"

"Soon. There's just some things I have to do first. Dealing with that golden haired immortal was one of them," I say tiredly, motioning over my shoulder.

"What does he want?"

I sigh through my nose, as Zaid leads us down a flattened path, leading deep into the forest. "It's hard to explain. Fate's business. I'll explain it to you in time."

"I just want you home Zayla. He turned you into an immortal too," he notes. Everytime that is mentioned, I feel guilty. I'm unsure why.  Perhaps it is because an immortal killed our family. I don't want to be associated with that kind of power. "I'm worried he will keep you with him forever."

"He won't. We made a deal," I explain. I don't tell him about our father's resurrection. It would break his heart knowing he doesn't want to live. "And believe it or not, he does keep to his promises."

"If not, I'll figure out a way to save you."

That makes me nervous.

I spot the river close in the distance. "Do you have another place to stay?"

"I do. A bigger, better place I adopted after becoming Alpha officially," he tells me. It warms my heart to hear that. I always knew he would be a great Alpha. He trained a long side me.  "I kept this place to remember you."

I smile at him, as we reach the foot of the river. It's more of a stream; the other side is only a few feet away. Ignoring the footsteps of Fate and Cian behind me, I kneel down, shoving my hands under the surface of the water. Immediately the gently caress of the current soothes the burning pain that surrounds my palms.

"That feels a lot better," I say dreamily, falling into sitting position in the grass. "I think I'm going to stay here for awhile."

"I have ointment at home for your hand. It will heal it exceptionally quickly," Fate tells me. Oh great, some incentive for me to want to go back. "The sooner we get to it, the less pain you'll experience."

Cian comes up beside Fate. "That is, once we come to our own agreement."

"Zayla presented my intentions," Fate explains, hardly looking at him. Fate knows how to truly isolate someone from a conversation if he truly feels like it. In this case, it's entertaining to watch.

"And what exactly will I receive after speaking to my sister?" Cain asks. I can almost see his facade stripping away, showing his true nature underneath. "She might listen to me if I'm convincing, however, I do need some incentive."

Fate folds his arms across his chest. "And what, of all things, does Greed truly desire?"

"You know one of my favourite thing is the lovely female immortals that cross the lands," Cian exclaims, much of the disgust of everyone listening. I'm not surprised, though. "Rumour has it you have a special ability to hide from your mates touch. I would love something like that."

"Is that right?" Fate says, knowing full well he possesses such power. One of the many powers he has that I despise. It makes me uncomfortable whenever I think about it. "And if I share this ability, will you tell Ira to leave the mortals be?"

"I'm sure I can make something work."

"Ira, as in the Sin, Wrath?" Zaid questions, cutting into the conversation. He must have learnt about them recently. Not many are familiar. Something tells me he has been looking into immortals for my sake. "What business does she have with immortals?"

"She's probably just bored, looking for Fate's attention," Cain teases, glancing pointedly at Fate, looking for a reaction. "She was in love with him at some point."

Zaid seems nothing but appalled by this. "If it puts any of my Pack members in harm's way, you better deal with it fairly quickly."

"You are so about the heroics, aren't you, Alpha?" Fate says tiredly, barely even acknowledging my brother with his gaze. I can tell, as Alpha, Zaid is bothered by this. "This is out of your league, I'm afraid."

"Don't talk to him like that," I snap.

Fate looks at me, surprised at my outburst. My palms are still submerged in the water, but if they weren't, I would definitely slap him across his face. It may not hurt him much, but it would give me a sense of satisfaction. And I'm sure Zaid would enjoy it too.

"My apologies," Fate says, furrowing his brow. "Once Cian receives his powers, he will speak to her, and end this once and for all. You have nothing to worry about."

"Very well then," Cain says, clearly bothered with the time he is spending here in the mortal lands. "I'm bored, so off I go. Thank you so very much for your hospitality, Zayla."

We all watch him walk back up the path. Gladly, none of us speak. I'm happy to see him go, hoping that will be the last time I come in contact with an immortal like him. A sin, especially. He truly did not care that we could easily identify his sin. He paraded it, proud, almost.

Fate takes a step closer to where i sit by the stream's edge. "I think it's time we go."

"You're right," I say. There is no point delaying the inevitable. Zaid frowns, as if sensing my reluctance no longer exists. "Don't look like that, Zaid. I'll be home in the next few weeks, I promise you."

I stand, removing my hands from the water. It burns, but I brush the pain off.

Zaid walks over, embracing me. "If you're not, I'm coming to save you. I promise you that."

"Listen, I'll be back. And when I am, we will make up for the time I was gone," I tell him. Hopefully I will be returning with my father. That will make Zaid happy. The happiest he has ever been.

"Please be safe," Zaid breathes, as Fate grasps my arm. "I love you."

I don't have time to reply. I don't have time to let him know that he is all I think about, and that I miss him more than anything. The ground falls out from beneath me, and I allow myself to close my eyes and relish the feeling. When I open my eyes, my skin is warm, and the sight of blue brightens around me.

Back. Back to Fate's paradise prison.

Crumpling to the ground, I let the sand catch me. Fate doesn't step away from me, instead kneeling down to my level. I just sit there, glaring at him.

"Hey, Zayla?"

My jaw clenches. "What? Haven't you inflicted enough torment for the day?"

"I didn't want to have to tear you away from your family for a second time. Perhaps you should go see your father again," Fate says gently, brushing a tendril of hair off my face. I shake his touch away, not wanting it right now.

"And what? Listen to him cry about how he wants to die again? How his life is worthless without his mate?" I question.

Fate looks grim."I'm sorry."

"I'm sick of your empty apologies," I tell him, forcing myself to my feet again. I stumble a little, again pushing away Fate's assistance. "For once, can you just tell me something that has a little meaning to it?"

"I haven't been so truthful to you Zayla."

"Clearly," I mutter. I hold my hands up to him, reminding him of the pain that still berates my skin. "Can I get some of that ointment you were talking about?"

He seems distracted with something else, hardly bothered with what my palms are showing. Wanting answers about that sudden burst of power will have to wait until pain is not constantly on my mind.

"I want to be honest with you. Tell you something you deserve to hear," Fate tells me, stopping me from walking toward where I know he keeps his medicine.

"I'm all ears," I say, throwing my hands up. "What could put me in a worse mood then this?"

He pauses before he next speaks. "If you want to know...I can tell you who killed your mother. And how he did it."
