"Close your eyes."
My eyes do nothing but narrowing on Fate, considering what he has presented. His plans to build my abilities with magic start today. To say I'm apprehensive hardly touches the surface of what I'm feeling. Fate has spoken nothing about where he is taking me, or what we are doing.
"I don't like the sound of that idea," I say pointedly, raising my eyebrow at him. Hardly any time has passed since he completely rejected me. And I found out my father had completely betrayed me and my brother.
But the sooner I agree to this, the sooner I'm out of here.
"When we arrive at our destination, I want you to make a guess first," he tells me firmly. I roll my eyes, tired of the curveballs he seems to be pulling out from nowhere. "It's important not to rely on your sight as your main sense. There are immortals who can use that against me."
Now that I'm aware of the immortal who killed my mother, and tore my family apart, I'm less afraid. Fate's own brother used to harbour the mind of the immortal who did it. At this point, I would spit in the face of Time is he stood in front of me.
"Fine, but I would appreciate it if you don't transport me to my death," I mutter, closing my eyes.
There's no point fighting it. I'm a slave to Fate's ideas. And perhaps I always will be.
Closing my eyes, I allow him to grasp my hand. Each time I have touched him since I have known him, his hands have never changed temperature. I'm not sure if it has something to do with him being immortal, but it's unnerving. Especially since I know the power he holds.
"Hold tight," he murmurs.
The floor suddenly falls out from under me, and the rush that seizes my stomach each time consumes me. I gasp, as my feet touch rock hard ground, Fate keeping me from toppling over. Instantly my skin crawls with a brittle, intense cold. It's so overwhelming I want, for a moment, to scream.
"It's freezing," I gasp. As I open my mouth to talk, I can feel the cold deep into my throat, capturing my voice in it's icy clutches. "Get me out of here."
Fate has let me go. I take a step, my bare feet, acclimated to the sand, slide into a freak pile of ice. Or snow. I should have known Fate would take me somewhere out of my element. I've only heard of snow, never touched it before. All I know is that I hate it already.
"You have to guess where we are first," Fate murmurs.
"I don't know. Somewhere with snow," I say quickly. I want to open my eyes and reveal where Fate has taken me, but I know he will change the game on me immediately. So instead I comply, wanting out of this environment as soon as possible.
Fate takes so long to reply, I begin hopping from foot to foot to avoid my feet freezing to the ground. "Be more specific, please."
"I feel rocks," I say, my mind spinning with ideas. What has snow? Anywhere could have snow. Plus, I'm assuming this is the immortal lands, which I know little about. However, I do know the most common place snow falls. "Ah, a mountain?"
"Open your eyes,"he tells me. I do, the world expanding in front of me. "We are standing in the middle of the alps found deep within Sinful's territory. I thought perhaps this would be a great place to start."
Everywhere I look, there's a mountain peak taller than the one we stand on. Each covered in a layer of brilliant white snow, touched only by the cool breeze. I look down. My bare feet stand upon a small raised rock dusted in the finest amount of snow. Already I can feel all my joints freezing. Fate stands in front of me, wearing the same thin shirt and pants. He barely looks bothered at all.
"It's freezing here," I growl."Do I get that?"
He's holding a warm looking Parker I was to rip from his hands and wrap around myself. I eye it enviously, thinking of ways to snatch it from his cruel fingertips.
"You do," he says pointedly. I watch as he very casually, very ruthless tosses the Parker off the cliff face. It tumbles all the way down, catching on a rock. "If you can summon it back."
"That's not fair. How am I meant to concentrate on magic when I'm freezing?" I question, staring longingly down at the jacket out of my reach completely. My breath is puffing out in front of me in gentle clouds, while my skin screams in pain. The climate does not suit me at all.
But I know what Fate is doing. He's clearly amused by it. I can see it by the look on his face.
"You will find you will use your magic most frequently when you are in situations out of your control," Fate explains, taking a step back from me. Perhaps he is assuming I will jump at him and use him for his warmth. I'm honestly tempted at this point.
"Fate seriously," I snap. "You may have faith in me, but I can't do this."
I'm simply not used to this climate. I can't survive her. My mind is as numb as my body, and all I can think about it warming this entire place up. I can feel the desperation rising up from my stomach.
"You can do it Zayla. You're strong, I've seen it. Dig inside yourself-"
His words suddenly echo in my ears, and then disappear all together. It's a familiar feeling to the last time I exploded with power. My eyes close, my head feeling as if it's about to implode. The pain is so unbearable, I feel myself scream, but I can't hear it.
And then it all vanishes. And I open my eyes.
The snow has disappeared. I already feel my limbs defrosting. And all around us, is bright green grass sprouting from the ground. Following it, are tree seedlings, and then beautiful flowers of different colours and types. Some I've never even seen before. And if encapsulates the entire mountain face. And the peaks in the distance, too.
"What's going on..." I question, glancing at Fate.
"It's grass. And flowers. And trees," he says slowly. Glancing down, he seems to notice a seedling growing from underneath us. He pushes us away just in time before it sprouts into a small tree. "Step back."
"What have I done. The snow is gone," I exclaim, examining the entire area. Suddenly, I'm hit with a wave of dizziness that sends me stumbling back. "I feel a little weak."
Fate catches me, leading me to the ground. "Hey, sit down. You used a lot of your energy on your power."
"I need to lie down."
Lying back on the grass, I begin to feel myself warm. I may feel weak, as if every ounce of energy has been seeped from my bones, but at least the cold has vanished. Even if the sun doesn't exist in this realm. Only the Moon watches over us.
"Holy hell Zayla...Either your special, or your parents had a lot more power than I thought," Fate says from beside me. His arm is tight around my waist, refusing to let go.
"I did this?" I say. I can hardly fathom the idea of that in my mind.
"We should probably get out of here before Sinful notices-"
"Speak of the devil and he shall appear."
That familiar sardonic voice fills my ears the moment Fate finishes his sentence. Glancing behind me, I see him. Those lavender eyes, dancing with mirth stare down at us. His hands are shoved in his pockets, moonlight reflecting on his black jacket. Sinful. Boy, do I hate him.
"Great. What do you want?" I growl. I would stand, but my legs refuse to listen to my commands.
"This is my territory. And after I discovered my lovely mountain tops have been tainted by grass and pretty peonies, I thought I bee investigate," he says merrily, circling us. I glare at him."And shall I say, I'm not at all surprised to see Fate behind it."
"I was just showing Zayla how her magic should be working," he says quickly. I want to frown at him, but I keep my expression neutral. He has a plan. "She's having a hard time catching on, it seems."
He's keeping me out of this, taking the blame. I'm unsure why, but I'm slightly grateful for it. I'm sure Sinful would have an opinion if he knew I was behind it.
"Right. You look a little pale for someone locked up in Fate's little sand dungeon," he says, staring down at me. I hate how he so deftly quirks his eyebrow at me.
I narrow my eyes back. "Call it genetics."
"You're an immortal now, Zayla. You're not fooling anyone," he taunts, stepping deliberately on a small daisy in front of him. Killer of all things pretty. Could he possibly get worse?
"Get out of here would you," Fate says dismissively, getting to his feet to match Sinful's height. "This is meant to be a training session for her. She needs full concentration."
"She seems quick tired," Sinful observes, a twinkle in his eye I hope only I catch. "Working her too hard huh,?"
I roll my eyes, hoping a blush hasn't bloomed too bright on my cheeks. Typical of Sinful to induce such a reaction. Perhaps he has hacked into my fragile mind, and is surfing through all the moments I've had with Fate. Even worse, the time he recently rejected me because he doesn't know me enough. As if something like that would bother him...
"Has your curiosity been fed yet?"
"Perhaps. I am curious, however, to know why you chose my territory?" Sinful asks.
"Well, she needs a challenging environment to learn in," Fate explains. I wish they weren't talking about me as if I was a student and Fate was my teacher. That's the last thing I want Sinful to consider me as. "And what's more frustrating than your territory?"
"A great point," Sinful notes, tucking his hands behind his back. "Now, I do have more important things to be dealing with at this point. Although, it was great to see your faces."
"Get out of here."
He nods in the simplest of goodbyes, and disappears, leaving only traces of himself in the form of shadowy wisps. I'm glad he's out of sight.
I look up at Fate, cringing against the surprisingly bright light of the Moon. "You lied to him. Why?"
"Because if he knew your potential, who knows what he would do, or who he would tell," Fate tells me smoothly. Of course. I should have known. I want to thank him profusely, hating the idea of what Sinful could have done with the information, but my mind is too jumbled in confusion.
I draw my knees up to my chest. "I don't even know what this means for me."
Fate turns, motion to what I have caused in front of us. "You can create life from nothing. You drew grass from under the rocks, and bloomed flowers. That isn't a normal power to possess."
"Does that mean I can bring something back to life?" I questions.
The idea of that has been in my head since it happened. It's foolish to think, but the idea of having that power is overwhelming. It could open up plenty of delightful possibilities.
"I wouldn't get so ahead of yourself now-"
"Do you know what this means?" I say, an idea suddenly sparking in my mind. I get to my feet, grabbing for Fate. "I can bring my mother back from the dead."
