Ready to Begin

A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.

Three in total. Two waiters and one waitress. They even had a sous chef, and they were grateful that they had decided to hire one. All of their marketing had paid off, and they were booked for breakfast and lunch. They didn't have a dinner service, but they did plan to host dinner events for people if they wished to have a more private dining celebration.

While Anita and their sous chef, Scarlett, worked on cooking, (f/n) welcomed guests into the café and managed both of the dining rooms. She made sure not to hover around people, but she would come over to tables if waiting staff needed help. (F/n) also made sure that tables weren't waiting too long for their food. Overall, she made sure that the restaurant was flowing well.

When lunch service ended, the place was cleaned up and the rest of the staff headed home by early evening, Anita and (f/n) were wiped but happy. Like last night, they crashed at the same table. They didn't have any drinks, and they didn't have a dinner event planned, so they had the evening to themselves. "Well, your food and drinks were a hit it seems," (f/n) complimented, grinning to her friend. "And, it seems like Scarlett followed your recipes perfectly."

Anita rested her chin on her palm. "She is a little slow with getting some of the dishes done, but I'm hoping with time she gets better. I figure that she's just adjusting right now, but she listens." A grin spread on her lips. "And, she also likes whiskey. Recommended a good bar in town too."

Instantly, (f/n) chuckled. "So, is that why you're keeping her?"

The chef waved her hand dismissively. "No. But," she held up her right index finger, "it is a plus." She lowered her hand. "But, the waiting staff was good too and made the orders loud and clear. I hope that they keep it up."

"I do too." (F/n) leaned back on her chair. "Let's hope that this just isn't opening day good luck." She smiled a little. "It was tiring, but I think that everyone gave it their all. And, the customers looked like they were leaving happy. Some even were very nice and said that we had a charming business and that they'd return again."

"Did anyone say if they were out of town or not?" Anita asked, sitting up straighter and hoping that her friend answered in the positive.

"A few people said they were visiting town for family or vacation." (F/n) smiled. "So, yes. But, most were locals. But," she smiled more, "I saw a few people taking pictures. Hopefully, they'll write a positive review online and bring us more customers."

"Well, I think that either way we do have reason to celebrate." Anita got up from her seat. "Why don't we go grab a drink at the bar Scarlett told me about?" When (f/n) didn't answer quick enough for her, she leaned on the table a bit. "Don't keep me waiting. I know that you're wanting to go too," she teased with a wide grin.

Rolling her eyes, (f/n) shook her head in amusement. "I was going to say yes, but you didn't let me answer." (F/n) stood up. "First, let me go grab more coffee for tomorrow. It seems that I underestimated the amount we needed for today with all of the orders." She sighed a bit in relief. "At least, I didn't have to grab any during service."

"Okay, I'll start getting ready." She smiled before she ran off upstairs. (F/n) sweat-dropped. Well, she left the room quickly. No doubt she didn't want to wait around and see if she would have to go down into the storage area instead. While her friend went up, she headed down.

Turning on the light switch, she walked down the steps and towards the boxes. As she was about to grab a bag of coffee, she paused. That was ... odd. For a split second, she swore that she had heard movement. It almost sounded like something old creaking from lack of use. Maybe, she was being paranoid and letting the unnerving feeling of the space get to her, but she couldn't help but check behind her.

There was no one there, and the door hadn't closed. Besides, the hinges on it didn't creak despite them not being replaced for awhile. For a moment, she remained silent. Nothing happened. Perhaps, a hard day of work had tired her out more than she thought. When she went to grab the bag again, though, she heard the same sound.

Where did it come from? It definitely was down in the space with her. She waited again, and she reached for the bag of coffee. That time, she didn't hear anything. Annoyed, she tapped her right foot and tried to recall the sound. No doubt it was close to her, but the space was small. It didn't come from above her; it was behind her, but it wasn't up by the door.

Since nothing happened, she huffed in irritation and grabbed the bag of coffee along with more bags. Just as she was about to walk up the stairs, she heard it again. This time, behind her, and she noted that it came from the right of her. To the right of her, though, was the stone wall. "Well if this place wasn't creepy enough, that's not helping," she muttered as she stared at the wall.

Setting down the bags, she rested her hands on her hips. What she was going to do was incredibly idiotic. It was what one shouldn't do in a horror movie, but hearing movement in the walls definitely was a cause for concern. If their business was actually unsafe, she wanted to know about it rather than be surprised and have it bite her in the a** later on.

Going closer to the wall, she set her hands on it and knocked against it. It sounded pretty solid. Then again, the stone and cement looked to be pretty thick. She continued to knock against the wall. No more sounds greeted her until she heard the creaking movement again. It came from right in front of her. Instantly, she backed away. Her eyes scanned over the wall. (F/n) didn't see anything out of the ordinary; she only heard it.

Becoming so focused on the wall, she didn't hear footsteps coming towards her. "(F/n) ..." Anita called out, about to say more, but she paused when she saw her friend jump high into the air. Concerned, Anita walked onto the first step. "Is everything alright? You're taking a long time."

Looking up to her friend, (f/n) noticed that she already had changed out of her chef's attire and was dressed up to head out. "I ..." She sighed and composed herself. "I heard something down here." Anita immediately froze up, and she didn't take another step down. (F/n) pointed to the wall. "It came from there, like something moving behind the wall."

"What?" Anita finally spoke. "I ... Are you sure?" She took a step back, and (f/n) wished that her friend didn't look like she was about to run and leave her behind.

"Yeah, I heard it multiple times." She glanced to the wall briefly before back up to her friend. "It's not happening now, but I definitely heard it." (F/n) picked up the bags of coffee. "I checked to see if the wall sounded hollow, but it only sounds solid."

"Okay ..." Anita stepped out into the entrance space. "How about ..." She stopped talking, and (f/n) froze again. There was the creaking sound. Then, there was muffled pounding. Instantly, (f/n) bolted up the steps and joined her friend in the hall. Each of them stared down the steps and shared a glance between each other.

Stopping abruptly, they didn't hear anything else. "Right, so what do we do about that?!" Anita exclaimed towards the end. She was using (f/n) as a shield, and (f/n) didn't answer immediately. It was as though she was waiting for something to burst out of the wall and come racing up towards them.

"We're going to lock this door. Then, we're going to have someone come out as soon as possible to check out that wall." (F/n) set the coffee down on the floor. "Get me the key to this door and call a contractor." She never looked away from the stairs. Anita didn't hesitate before she ran off to get the key and make the call.

While both of them were terrified, he was ecstatic. Well, that worked out as well as he could've hoped for. Quietly, he moved away, and the creaking was light enough that neither of the women heard it. He moved back into his spot, and he mentally grinned. Soon, he finally could return to his old habits and check on an old friend of his.

As he was making plans and waiting, Anita finally returned to (f/n) with the key. In mere seconds, (f/n) had the door locked. She proceeded to grab a table and put it in front of the door. They'd move it before the contractor came, and if the contractor couldn't come until after service tomorrow, they'd move it before breakfast. "Did you make the call?"

"Not yet. I'm going to now." Anita grabbed her friend and guided them both into the one dining room. (F/n) leaned against the doorway and kept a watch on the blocked door. Someone answered on the other line. "Yes, I was wondering what's the earliest available time for someone to come out and check an old wall in our building?" Watching her friend's expressions, (f/n) saw Anita frown. "Not for a few more days? So, Thursday?"

It only was Monday now. That wasn't good. "Okay, at six in the evening?" Anita nodded. "Thank you. We'll see you, then." She hung up and collapsed onto a nearby chair. "This utterly sucks."
