Pages to Dig
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
Since no success had been found on Kaleb's page yet, (f/n) opened up another tab and looked at Tristan's. All of the pictures of his flings from before remained removed. Like Kaleb, he talked about his business too and trips associated with that. There also seemed to be trips planned for vacation too. Nothing out of the ordinary. A frown rested on her lips, and she switched between the two pages multiple times as if that would show her something suddenly. It didn't, and she stopped back on Kaleb's page.
Lee was quiet the whole time since she didn't seem to be in the mood for conversation and he didn't wish to break her concentration either. He was examining the pages too. Nothing strange popped out to him, but he wrote no note to (f/n). Already, he could see her becoming discouraged, and it didn't help that tomorrow was Friday. After that, it was the trip to the pool. That certainly was something to dread, even more so for (f/n).
When she didn't change the current spot on the page after awhile, he was about to write to her and ask if she had found something. (F/n) was just staring at the screen. Her hands were intertwined on her lap, her legs were crossed, and her brows were furrowed. Lee never wrote that note, however, since she suddenly sat up straight. "Wait!" she exclaimed, clicking between the two profiles again. "It's not on either on them!"
Wondering what information she was referring to, he went to write a note, but she stopped him. "Sorry, I'll explain," she quickly responded. Her left hand moved away from his right before she pointed to the screen. "Neither of them have any mention of me on them." (F/n) lowered her hand. "That might sound self-centered, but Kaleb talks about Anita and what his plans are with her. The café is even mentioned in the sense of her being a chef here, but I'm nowhere to be found, yet he supposedly wants to be on good terms with me." She rested her chin on her hands.
"I don't know, but I feel like being the friend of his girlfriend I would show up at least once. Even in the pictures he's posted of his dates with Anita when I've been there and eating with them, I'm conveniently not in them." She pointed to one at The Iron Clipper. "I was right next to her. He'd have had to have purposely angled the camera so that I wasn't in the shot. I didn't get up to use the bathroom once we got that food, and I even saw him take the picture. I posed in it too for Anita's sake at the time."
Switching to Tristan's profile, she continued, "But, maybe, that's me overreacting." She shrugged. "I don't know, but with Tristan, it's definitely weird. We're dating," she made air quotes, "but I'm nonexistent on his page." Her brows furrowed again in thought. "I mean there are explanations for this, but they've both been updating their pages. At least in my case, I haven't touched social media for awhile, except for my business page."
It's odder on Tristan's part, but for Kaleb, it could be argued that he's trying to hide that you're the manager at the café so that the switch is easier to make. She hummed in agreement to that. But, like you said there are other explanations. Tristan could be making sure that his prior relationships don't try to attack you. He may want to keep it a surprise that he's 'dating' you. Also, both of them might start adding things about you now that you accepted their invitations. Lee noticed her shoulders sagging, and he rested a hand on her left one comfortingly before he removed it a little bit later. I'm not saying it's nothing, but it's not enough to convince Anita. All it might do is cause her to get after them and tell them to include you on their profiles.
"I ..." She sighed slowly. "You're right. I just wish that it could do more."
We'll see if it changes once they noticed you've accepted their invitations. Gradually, she nodded, and he wished that he could've told her that it'd solve the whole issue, but it wouldn't. Let's look a little longer. Then, you should eat something, or you won't have the energy to keep doing this for some more of the night.
"Okay," she sighed out, combing her right fingers through her hair. (F/n) scrolled down further on Tristan's page. A frown remained on her lips, but it wasn't directed at Lee. It was at the lack of information. Why were these two so good at hiding things? Annoying was an understatement to describe the situation.
At first, she was quiet, but she began to huff every few moments after about fifteen minutes. Lee wondered if she even was thoroughly searching the page anymore. He was examining the content as best he could, but he was getting distracted by her behavior. Instead of calling her out on it, he gently intertwined his right fingers with her left and tugged softly. She didn't pull away, but she averted her eyes to his before she read the note he passed to her. Time for a break. Her lips parted to argue, but he used his left index finger to press it against her lips and shook his head. (F/n) sighed in slight irritation, but she did nod, and he removed his finger.
Glad that she wasn't resisting, he led her downstairs and into the kitchen. She let go of his hand once they reached it and seated herself. He peered into the fridge before he flew a note over to her. What did Scarlett make? A small smile touched her lips, and it distracted her mind from dwelling too much on the lack of findings for the evening.
"Of what's left in there, the chicken-ginger stew and bread." (F/n) rested her chin on the palm of her right hand and watched him grab the two items. Lee retrieved a bowl and plate to set up the food for her. Soon enough, the soup was being reheated in the microwave. As the quiet hum of the microwave filled the room, she focused on him and decided to ask, "So, can you tell me about yourself now?" He paused. "We're not searching after all." Would he already go back on his word?
I can. The microwave beeped, and he warmed up the bread next. What did you want to know first? Of course, Lee was prepared to discuss his whole past with her, but he was curious about what she wished to know first. Admittedly, he also wished to see how she'd react. She had handled his brief mention of some of his kills and the fact that he was murderer better than he had thought, so he hoped that she'd respond well.
"How did you become like this?" The answer to that question should tell her what he was exactly, and that'd help her somewhat sort out how to react if he did grow to have feelings for her. And as she became more concentrated on him at the moment, she forgot about the lack of evidence against Kaleb. It gave her mind a break on that issue, and she didn't huff out any breath.
With the bread finished, he placed both items in front of her and grabbed her a spoon before he set that down for her too. Lee took a seat next to her and smiled a bit at the question. He supposed that could answer several questions of hers at once. Keeping his word, he wrote a note and slid it to her. I was murdered. Before she brought a spoonful of stew to her lips, she paused. In my last moments, I swore that I'd haunt this building and make my killer's life a living h*ll.
Setting the spoon down, she stared to him for a moment. Another note was placed in front of her as if he already knew all of her next questions, and it certainly answered several. I was human before I possessed this mannequin. I don't how I managed it. Only that it happened. Perhaps, the sheer will of me not wanting to die made it so that my spirit found its way into here. Maybe, it was something else that allowed me to live like this, but if so, I have no memory of that happening.
Not meeting her eyes, he stared at the wall ahead of him, and he looked like he sighed. Soon enough, another note was before her. I lived here before I died. So did my business partner and friend. He's the one who killed me because I found out something that he didn't want me knowing. And, I wasn't quick enough to kill him first. Lee shook his head, and if he could show expressions, a bitter smirk would be on his lips. His eyes met hers. Our cases are similar, and that's partly why what Anita's doing to you pisses me off so much. He betrayed me; I put all of my trust in him, and he only was after my wealth.
There was so much information contained in all of that, and she didn't know what to say first when his dark brown optics locked onto her (e/c) ones again. "... Lee ... I ..." She broke eye contact and peered down at her stew. It was getting cold, but she was processing the information too much to take a bite. Lee noticed and picked up the spoon before he held it to her lips. (F/n) didn't immediately take it, but she did lean forward eventually and accept the bite. He pulled the spoon away and set it back into the bowl.
After she swallowed, she rested her hands on her lap. "... I don't know where to begin. I guess how long ago was all of this?" She diverted her eyes to him. "You said that you both had lived here, but no one around town seems to remember that."
It wouldn't surprise me. It's been sixty five years. She couldn't see the frown on his lips, and the anger in his eyes, but, suddenly, his lack of knowledge on certain things began to make more sense. So, he had been locked in that storage area since the nineteen fifties, which meant that he probably was actually in his eighties or nineties, but she didn't ask his exact age for the moment. Instead, she read the rest of the note. I don't even know if he's alive anymore, but he sealed me in and left me to rot. Though, I would've killed him otherwise. His fists clenched, and she found herself placing a hand over them gently, which caused him to look over to her.
