Coffee to Prepare
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
A complete and utter headache. Nothing worth noting had been found, only information that Lee and she already knew. It was as though both families had anticipated people trying to find some dirt on them and managed to erase anything online that might pertain to something negative about them. There probably was content that was incriminating against Kaleb and in turn Tristan, but she was no hacker. And, she wasn't tech savy enough to learn how to hack into every website she needed in a couple of days, and she didn't even know if that was possible for someone. As for Lee, he still didn't know all of the basics about a laptop or other technology for that matter, which did point to him having been around before technology really took off.
What made matters worse was that she had her date with Tristan later that day. She was to meet him in a coffee shop close to the hotel called Cup of Pastry. And as usual, Anita gave her a teasing look throughout service that honestly made Anita only look more the villain. (F/n) would've preferred an evil laugh coming from Anita since at least that would've been honest.
Since she had been the one to arrange the date with Tristan, though, that meant that she couldn't really pass it off to the waiting staff and Scarlett like she had before. To them, it looked like she just was being moody to hide the fact that she was looking forward to the date since otherwise why would she agree to a third one if the last one had gone badly. Scarlett and Hal did tell her not to worry, however, and that the date would go well, that she'd do fine. She appreciated the sentiment even if they misunderstood the situation, but she couldn't blame them; they didn't know the truth, and she couldn't risk telling them it. At least, Lee knew. That gave her some comfort.
Lee's change of dress also did keep Anita from teasing her about Tristan every now and then. She'd ask how she enjoyed changing him and other such things. (F/n) wondered if Lee was laughing or wanting to punch her lights out. Maybe, both. But, Anita would tie it back into her date with Tristan and talk about what he might be wearing, that he'd be better than a mannequin and several other supposed selling points for Tristan. Frankly, a rock sounded more pleasant than Tristan.
It did ease her mind, though, that she saw more of Lee now than Anita. He was stationed at the front of the café and held a menu in his hands. The small cracks in his face and faded hair color did give him somewhat of antique charm, which customers appreciated with the overall fifties diner's theme meeting that of a fairytale land. Some of the customers even took pictures with him, and she tried not to laugh at the idea of him being annoyed by them doing so.
That idea was confirmed after the first day of service with him being stationed at the front. He was happy that he wasn't around Anita anymore, but he didn't exactly like strangers clinging to his arms either. To him, they weren't even victims that he was trying to fool. She only wished that she could see the irritated frown on his lips, but he did comment that he was glad to see that his new place in the café brought a smile to her lips.
Comments like that and his kiss he had given her the other night did make her wonder if he was changing his opinion on her even more. She didn't ask since she truthfully didn't know what she would do if he openly admitted that he was growing to have feelings for her. Sure, he admitted that might be the case, but it still was a might, not a certainty. If he brought it up on his own time, however, she'd have to give him some sort of answer.
Was she in love with him? No. Did she appreciate him? Yes. Could she see herself having feelings that pertained more to a partnership, even more than a friendship? ... Maybe? It hadn't been long since they started working together, yet they had gotten pretty close in the sense of being a comfort to the other, but she felt like there remained a wall between them. That might be because they still kept information from each other.
Perhaps once that came down, she would have a better answer. Or, maybe, it was because he was a murderer. She could accept that and not pester him about that because he was helping her and going along with her plan to stop Anita, Kaleb and Tristan, but could she look past that enough ever to love him? At the moment, she didn't know, but it was something to think about. The more he told her, the more he acted kindly around her, she found herself willing to look past his more gruesome actions. He even admitted that one event was what caused him to head down the path he did. That didn't excuse what he did, but it meant that he had a reason, that he didn't just act out of pure sadistic desire.
Besides those points, there also remained the simple fact that he was a mannequin or something possessing a mannequin. Regardless, he was a man made out of plastic and metal. A relationship with him would be ... Well, she enjoyed his company, and she could hold his hand and other simple actions. But, she never could go outside with him unless she wanted to look crazy. Not to mention that her family would question her behavior, and she didn't know how accepting they would be if she told them that she was in a romantic relationship with a mannequin.
Everything they did would have to be in secret. Plus, there was an aging problem. Would he really want to be with her when she got older? He'd still look like a man in his twenties even when she became elderly. Plus, she would die. He might be alive for a long time after. She didn't know how death worked for him, and he might not even be able to die.
"(F/n)?" A hand waved in front of her face, and (f/n) snapped out of her thoughts to see Anita in front of her. She blinked a few times while Anita giggled and smirked. "You've been cleaning that table for awhile now. Anything I should know?"
"No. Just stalling," she answered in a somewhat monotone voice. She stood up straight and tried to leave the room before Anita could tease her anymore.
"Uh huh," she hummed out in doubt. "You sure that you weren't daydreaming about Tristan?"
"Positive."
"But, you did schedule this date with him, not me." Anita walked beside her, and (f/n) rolled her eyes as she headed to the kitchen to clean out the dirty rag.
"I only did so because you would've scheduled it sooner." She met Anita's eyes. "I know how you work." Anita grinned before she leaned back on one of the kitchen counters when they entered the kitchen. (F/n) worked on cleaning the rag before she wrung it out and hung it to dry on the faucet. "I would be going on my fourth or fifth date if I hadn't done anything."
"Well, you always can tell him that you don't want to see him again." A grin was on Anita's lips, and (f/n) desperately wanted to wipe it off. "You're ultimately the one continuing this." And, she was the backstabbing b*tch, who put her in such an awful position.
"Yeah, yeah." (F/n) faced Anita. "So, should I go change, or are you going to prevent me from going? It'd be a welcome change."
Making a shooing motion with her hands, Anita waved (f/n) away. "Go change. Don't want to keep him waiting." (F/n) rolled her eyes once more and left the kitchen. She didn't hear Anita behind her, and she wondered if Anita was contacting Kaleb to tell him of the news. As she walked to the stairs, she glanced over to Lee. He didn't move, but she had a feeling that he would if he was certain that Anita wouldn't see him.
Facing away from him, she headed upstairs and entered her room shortly after. It didn't take her long to change, and she left her hair down to keep it simple as usual when dealing with Tristan. She slipped on her light blue denim shorts, black v-neck, black ankle boots and red crop leather jacket. (F/n) took her black clutch and went back downstairs. Her eyes stared at the door as if it would open up to her doom right away. Maybe, she could pretend that she got lost.
Not like she had a phone to contact him even though Anita insisted that she get a new one sooner than later. (F/n) argued that she could get one once they paid off more on the café, which Anita reluctantly accepted as reasonable. Before she left, though, she heard steps behind her and saw Anita grinning from the dining room. She was leaning on one of the tables. "Have fun," she mentioned in a sing-song voice.
"Right. I won't be long," (f/n) assured before she took a deep breath in and exhaled. She didn't look to Lee since Anita was right there, and she left the café. After the door closed, Anita locked it before she turned towards Lee.
Grabbing the menu, she giggled and looked up to him. "Looks like you lost your admirer for a time." She winked before she spun on her heel and headed towards the kitchen just as her phone rang. Anita answered and confirmed, "Yep, she's on her way. She's gone. Are you going to come over here, then, for a bit?"
Nodding, she grinned. "Great! I'll see you soon, then. I have good news for you." Anita hung up shortly after and went into the kitchen. Well, that was an interesting development. Lee smirked. It seemed like he might get an update on the pair, which would probably be helpful to (f/n) and him. His smirk did turn into a frown, though, when he thought of what Anita just had said to him. It bothered him, and he hoped that (f/n) would be alright.
