Arrive to Investigate
A/N: As usual, I would recommend putting the video on loop.
Tuesday and Wednesday weren't as busy as opening day. Same for the service on Thursday, but they still received a good portion of patrons. Thankfully, service never slowed down too much to the point where they were twiddling their thumbs, and it kept Anita and (f/n)'s minds off of the problem in their storage area. Scarlett and the waiting staff simply were told that they were looking into expanding the storage area.
When their staff left, though, they put a table back in front of the storage area door, which eased their minds a bit. They shared the same room at night, and they didn't go into the storage area alone ... well technically speaking. Anita would stand at the top of the steps and keep the door open. Luckily, they hadn't heard any new sounds from the wall, and they wished that they had moved into a town where building plans were required to be kept on record. No plans had existed when they had purchased the property, but they had moved in and were doing well business wise, so they didn't want to pack up and move out when they just got settled unless it was absolutely necessary.
To help keep her mind off of the creepy space, (f/n) tried to get more information out of Anita on her boyfriend, but her friend still wouldn't budge on the matter. Anita kept telling her to wait, and that she'd get to meet him in the future. Even after a few glasses of warm whiskey, Anita wouldn't tell her anything more on him.
Much to both of their relief, however, it was almost six in the evening. The contractor would arrive soon, and they finally could figure out what was going on in their storage space. Both of them sat at their usual table in the one dining room. They had the three chandeliers and a few other lights on in the building. Anita had a glass of ginger ale, wanting to hold off on the liquor until after the contractor left. (F/n) had a glass of iced water, and she was tapping her left fingers on the tabletop while she occasionally listened for anything coming up the storage area stairs. There was no table in front of the door, but it was locked, so there was that much.
Immediately, both of them looked up when they heard a knock on the door. (F/n) got up, and Anita walked behind her. Opening the door, (f/n) saw a man of about five feet and nine inches standing there, who looked to be in his early forties. At the moment, he was wearing a dark green button-up, black pants and a tool belt, and his auburn hair was slicked back. Both of them could see equipment in his truck. "Hi," he held out his right hand, and (f/n) shook it in greeting, "it's Jason."
"(F/n)." She stepped aside and closed the door after he entered.
"So, what exactly did you two need me to look at." He wore a polite smile as his blue eyes looked between them. "You never told me on the phone, just that you needed me out here." Both women shared a glance, and (f/n) figured that she'd be leading the way.
"Well, there are no plans for the building, and we need you to look at a wall." She started to walk towards the storage space, and Anita followed behind both of them. "It's in the storage space. Back on Monday, we heard sounds coming from it."
"What kind of sounds?" he asked as she unlocked the door, opened it and turned on the light.
"Like muffled pounding." Already, she could see the confused expression on his face. He had noted that the wall was stone and that small animals usually didn't make pounding noises in the wall. There also should be no large enough spaces for one to crawl through. She stopped when they reached the bottom, but she left enough room for him to stand beside her and look at the wall. Anita came down, though reluctantly, but she remained on the lower steps. "I know it's odd, and that's why we called you out here. We didn't know what to make of it."
"That certainly is strange." He looked over the wall, and like her, he couldn't tell if there was something on the other side simply by knocking on the stones. Jason paused, however, when he looked up. "Huh."
"What is it?" (f/n) asked quickly, wondering if he had an answer already.
Taking out his flashlight, he shone it up on a spot and stood up a little on his feet. "You wouldn't really notice it if you were looking over the wall quickly, but there's a small hole in the stone. I can't really see through it, or even see if it goes all the way through, unless I get a step stool. I'll be back." He grabbed a marker. "You both are fine with me marking the wall right?" They nodded with no hesitation; they wanted him to do whatever he needed to do to give them an answer on how they could've heard such a sound from the wall.
Thanking them, he drew a line before he capped the marker. "I'll be back." (F/n) and Anita nodded before they watched him go back up the steps. He soon was out of the house and grabbing the stool. (F/n) turned her attention to the wall and stared at the hole. Anita didn't move from her spot.
"I can't believe that I didn't see this before," (f/n) muttered, but she made no motion to go closer to the hole. "But, he's right that it's easy to miss. It almost blends in with the dark color of the stone."
"Well, thankfully, Jason spotted it. Now, we just have to see if there's anything on the other side or if it goes through all of the way for that matter," Anita commented, her eyes locked onto the hole as if a monster would burst out from it.
Before either of them said anything more, Jason came back and set up the stool. Once on top, he shone the flashlight on the hole and peered through. (F/n) shivered at the thought of something coming through the hole and stabbing him in the eye, like in horror movies. Thankfully, that didn't happen, and Jason moved his eye closer to the wall while still being able to shine light through the hole. Anita crossed her arms over her chest and tapped her fingers against her forearm due to her nerves. Not being able to take the silence any longer, Anita asked, "Anything?"
"Yes, it goes through." He squinted. "I just can make out a wall beyond this one and what looks like some old shelves maybe? It's hard to tell with just the flashlight, but you definitely have a room behind here." Jason pulled himself away and stepped down while both of them shared a worried look.
"What could've made that pounding sound, then? Could a larger animal have gotten stuck in there?" Anita questioned, wanting to run up the steps.
"I'll need to open up this wall if you want me to be sure, but I need permission from you both that you're willing to let me open up the wall." Noting that both of them were uncertain, he reassured, "I don't think that a very large animal will be in there. We haven't heard any pounding while we've been down here, and there probably would be a noticeable entrance at the back of the house going down into this space." He glanced between them. "You both have seen the back of the house, right?"
"Yeah, we sometimes go in the yard, and we haven't seen anything that would lead down into the storage space," (f/n) responded since Anita only was looking more worried by the second.
"Okay, then, it should be safe to open. Have you heard the sound again these last few days?" (F/n) shook her head. "In that case, there might be more shelves in there, and if they're really old, one of them might've finally fell in on itself since they look wooden. It collided with the wall, some of the wood dropped and it sounded like muffled pounding." He looked completely relaxed and calm, which did help to ease their minds a little bit. "Or, something else fell in there and hit the wall. But, you always can leave the wall up too."
"What do you want to do, Anita?" (f/n) asked, still uncertain about it, even if Jason's explanation made some sense.
"I guess we can open it up. It'll give us more room, and we'll finally know what was making that sound," she reasoned, but she didn't sound convinced either.
"Do you know why this wall might've been put up here?" (f/n) inquired, thinking that it was weird to limit the storage space so much.
"It's hard to say without any building plans or plans of modifications made to the building. This building is an older building, so it's possible that someone put up the wall as a cheap way to solve an issue in the remaining part of the area. They didn't want to have to pay for more work to be done, so they just put up a wall and walked away." Jason shrugged and stared at the wall for a moment before he glanced between them. "I've seen that done before around here, and if that's the case, I would recommend opening up the wall. If something needs to be repaired back there, it's better to fix it before it starts to affect the rest of the structure."
That did make sense, and they didn't want to suffer further costs down the road because they were over thinking this whole thing and assuming that something bizarre was going on. She looked over to Anita, who eventually nodded back. "Okay, we'll be fine with opening it up and seeing what we're dealing with."
"I'll go get my tools, then. You two should head up while I work since I'll be making a hole in a stone wall and this space is small." Neither of them had an issue with that. "I'll only open it up a bit, and if you want the rest of the wall torn down after seeing the space, I can come back tomorrow and do that." Both of them nodded and headed upstairs with him. Soon, they would know what had made that sound.
