5 | he likes me, he likes me not
***********************************************************************
"Alright," Mr. Molina says. "Bella, please move next to Mitchell. Ethan, I want you to take Rebecca's seat, and, Rebecca, please move to where Bella was sitting."
The blood in my body practically freezes. Bella's old seat? That means . . . I'm gonna be sitting next to Edward! I'm freaking out . . . I'm freaking out . . . I'm freaking out . . .
I try to act as normal as possible as I pull out the chair next to Edward and sit down next to him. I cross my arms in front of me on the desk nonchalantly. Out of the corner of my eye, I notice movement from Edward. Using my side-eye vision, I watch him as he puts a hand up to his nose. Ummm, okay . . . why is he doing that? I don't smell anything, and I don't think Planarians have a bad smell either, so it couldn't be that.
At that very moment, Mr. Molina comes over and places two samples of Planarians on our desk, one for me and one for Edward. Without a word, Edward removes his hand from his nose and timidly slides my sample over to me.
"Thanks," I say. At this point I'm just hoping that he'll at least say something to me. I look at him for a response.
When Edward's eyes meet mine, they have a look in them that I have never seen before. I can't tell if something is wrong with him or not as he stares at me with a cold, hard stare. The longer I look into his eyes, the more weird I feel. Something about Edward is starting to scare me, something so unknown that I can't even describe it. Something so horrible and awful that it feels like if I don't look away now, he'll kill me or something.
So I do just that, I look away from him quickly. The second I turn my head away from him though, he starts making a low huffing and growling sound. His unusual behavior is making me feel extremely uncomfortable. I grip the table subconsciously as an attempt to distract myself from the weird boy next to me.
Wondering if anyone else in the class has noticed Edward's weird behavior, and it's not just me going insane, I look around the classroom.
My eyes fill with horror. I inhale a gasp. Every student in the class is slumped over. Their bodies are mangled and covered in dark patches . . . blood, it's blood. My chest heaves up and down as I open my mouth to scream.
Nothing has time to come out of my mouth though, as Edward leaps from his chair and puts his arm around my throat. His other arm clutches me hard in the stomach, pulling my blouse up in the process.
I try to scream, but his grip around my throat is so tight that I can barely breathe. Before I know it, he brings his face close to my neck and sinks his teeth into me. I finally manage to let out a blood curdling scream at the pain.
My body takes control of itself and thrashes around in his grip. But he's just too strong for me. My arms swing around and try to hit Edward in the face or remove his arms, but nothing works. I clutch the arm that he has around my throat with all my might, clawing at it with both my fingers and nails. His teeth are still in my neck, causing me excruciating pain as I feel the rush of blood begin to leave my body.
I grow even more terrified when I begin to feel Edward stepping backwards, pulling me along with him. My legs thrash like crazy as they're dragged along. The desk gets hit by my feet in the process.
I feel myself falling suddenly, to which I realize that Edward is trying to pull me backwards onto the floor with him, probably hoping it will be easier to suck out all my blood when I'm against him on the floor.
At this realization, I let out another blood curdling scream. Tears fall from my eyes, my mouth agape in horror. "NO!!!!!!"
I sit up in bed suddenly, my mind rushing with terror. I clutch my bed sheets tightly as I gasp for air. I scan around my room. The calm pitch black darkness brings some comfort to me.
It's okay. It's okay. It was just a dream. It was just a dream.
Still not completely feeling stable, my mind starts to reminisce about the dream again. Dark scenarios fill my mind and make me shutter. With my thoughts going wild, a dark silhouette in the corner of my room makes my heart jump with terror. I can't take my eyes off the dark silhouette, and the longer I stare at it, the more it . . . it looks like Edward Cullen. I can almost feel his topaz eyes staring down at me.
My body jumps with fright, and I recoil in bed, kicking the sheets back. I quickly reach for the lamp on my bedside table and flick it on. I whip my head back around towards the corner and cock my head in confusion.
There's nothing there. What the . . .
I shake my head. It was probably just the trick of the mind or something. All I've been able to think about lately is Edward, so I shouldn't be surprised that both my dreams and my imagination are filled with nothing but him. In fact, it's getting so bad to the point where I just need to avoid Edward completely. My life felt so much more simple and sensible before I met him. Now here I am dreaming that he's some sort of blood-sucking monster.
So that settles it then, I guess. Tomorrow at school, I'm going to find a way to drop biology class. Hopefully, unlike when Edward tried to drop biology, there will actually be some open classes for me to join.
*Time Skip*
Even though I managed to drop biology and join chemistry, I still can't completely seem to avoid Edward Cullen. Today, both the biology and chemistry classes are going on a field trip to the Forks Community College Greenhouse, which means, Edward is going to be there. Whoo hoo.
I'm currently talking to Bella by her truck. The two of us are waiting to get on our bus. During our whole conversation, I keep glancing at the dent on Bella's truck, easily making out Edward's hand print every time I look at it. I'm just glad that Bella hasn't been able to figure out how the dent was made.
I notice out of the corner of my eye that Edward, Alice, and Jasper are heading towards the buses as well. I make sure not too look at them for too long, not wanting to risk accidentally making eye contact with any of them.
Out of no where, Mike walks up to me and Bella. "Look at you two, huh? You're alive," he jokes dramatically, mimicking the voice of Dr. Frankenstein with his hand raised in the air.
I smile at Mike's antics.
A small smile forms on Bella's lips. "I know, yeah. False alarm, I guess." She shrugs.
"Yeah," Mike responds somewhat awkwardly. He rubs the back of his neck before turning to Bella and giving his attention solely to her. "Now, I wanted to ask you, you know, if, you know, it's like a month away, but . . . "
I roll my eyes at Mike. I see where he's going with this. He's about to ask Bella to prom. I just know it. I walk away from Bella and Mike before things get anymore awkward. I sigh, making my way towards our bus. Hopefully, things on our actual field trip will be better.
*Time Skip*
Much to my surprise, things on the field trip are going much better. I'm actually enjoying myself at the greenhouse. I've always loved things in nature like animals and plants, so anything flourishing with life is right up my alley.
Bella and I are walking side-by-side through the greenhouse with our field trip group. I'm making sure to keep a distance between myself and the Cullens, Edward most of all specifically. Luckily, he's a few students farther up in line from where Bella and I are walking.
"So," I begin, turning to Bella. "Are you going with Mike to the prom?"
Bella shakes her head with a small smile. "No, I'm busy that weekend. I'm going to Jacksonville to visit my mom and stepdad."
"Oh, poor Mike."
Bella shrugs. "Not really, I suggested for him to ask Jessica instead. I know how much she wanted to go with him."
"Has he asked her yet?" I ask.
"I don't know. There's Jessica up ahead. I'll go ask." With that, Bella leaves my side and starts to make her way up in the line of students.
In desperate fear of not wanting to walk alone on this field trip, I force myself to follow Bella through the line of students. Of course, in order to reach Jessica, I have to follow Bella passed Edward to reach her, and I really don't want to risk gaining his attention.
So, as smoothly and quietly as I can, I try to slip pass Edward like a normal sane human being who's only minding my own business. To my surprise, Edward begins to slow down his walking pace until he's awkwardly now walking at the same speed as me.
Before I even have a chance to pick up my walking speed, he addresses me in his smooth voice. "Why did you drop biology?" he asks.
I look at him in surprise, my mind quickly trying to come up with a lie to tell him. "Um, I don't plan on having a a career that has to do with biology, so I just dropped it. Chemistry just has more to do with my future career ideas, so I thought it would just be better if I joined it instead." I shrug nonchalantly, hoping that was all he was going to say to me.
But the more I think about it, the more I realize that there's a big, fat elephant between me and Edward. I might as well just address it before it can weigh down on me anymore.
"How did you do it?" I speak up suddenly. "How did you stop the truck?" A part of me is surprised at how bold I sound before I mentally shake it off and wait for Edward to answer my question.
"Yeah," Edward hesitates, "I had an adrenaline rush. It's very common. You can Google it." He smiles.
"Yeah, like you just did last night," I say snarkily before I even realize I said it. Edward is the one with secrets here, not me. I have every right to be the bold one here, even if it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable to be so forward like this.
Suddenly, Bella, who was walking in front of us, slips on a puddle on the ground and pushes back into me. I stop her from falling, but the force from stopping her makes me loose my balance.
Edward quickly grips onto my arm and settles me back on my feet.
"Can you at least watch where you walk?" he snaps at Bella.
Bella looks down at her feet and moves farther up in the group away from us. "Sorry," she mumbles.
I give Edward an angry look. "You didn't have to be so rude to her," I chastise.
"She should have been watching where she was going. She could have hurt you," Edward says almost in a growl.
I roll my eyes. Frustrated and feeling bad for Bella, I pick up the pace and try to catch up with the poor girl.
Edward picks up the pace as well and catches up with me. "Look, I'm sorry I'm being rude all the time," he apologizes. "I just think it's the best way."
I look at Edward flabbergasted. I just don't know what to say to that. Luckily for me, Jessica comes over and breaks the awkward tension between us.
"Rebecca," Jessica chirps.
Edward takes the hint and walks away from us. Good riddance.
"Guess who just asked me to prom," Jessica says excitedly.
"Let me guess. Mike?" I take a gander.
She nods happily. "Yeah, I-I actually totally thought that Mike was gonna ask Bella."
I want to tell Jessica that Mike actually did ask Bella first, but being the good friend that I am, I'm not going too, for both Bella and Jessica's sakes.
After our field trip group is given a tour of the whole greenhouse, we're given some free time before we're supposed to get back on the buses. I go ahead and start heading back towards my assigned bus early. Field trips always tucker me out. I'm just really tired and feel the need to sit down and relax. Also, the encounter I had with Edward earlier is making me feel even more frustrated on top of everything.
I hear heavy footsteps coming from behind me. I look back only to find Edward walking up to me from behind. His presence scares me a little, but I try my best not to show it on my face.
"Rebecca, we . . . we shouldn't be friends," he says.
I give Edward a weird look. "Were we ever friends?" I say back. I've noticed how every time I talk to Edward, I seem to get more and more confident talking to him, which is a good thing, I suppose.
This time, Edward stares back at me, or down at me I should say since he's taller than me. He doesn't seem to know what to say either. We hold this stare for an uncomfortable amount of time.
"Hi," says a cheery voice.
I break the stare with Edward, my eyes landing on Edward's sister, Alice. Jasper is standing not too far behind her.
"Um, are you gonna be riding with us?" Alice asks, looking at me with a sweet smile on her face.
"No, our bus is full," Edward answers before I even have a chance to open my mouth. He glares at me with cold eyes, then gets on the bus. Alice and Jasper follow him onto the bus.
I stand in place with my mouth agape in annoyance. Well, someone sure is moody.
*Time Skip*
It's lunch period at school, and I couldn't be happier about it. This school day feels like it has lasted forever. Ugh, I just can't wait for the summer to be here already.
With my lunch tray in hand, I walk up to our usual table. The whole gang is already sitting down, including Bella. I set my lunch tray down but don't pull out my chair yet.
Eric smiles up at me. "Wanna come to La Push with us?" he asks.
Everyone at the table looks at me with eager eyes.
"What's La Push?" I ask.
"La Push Beach down at the Quileute Rez," Mike explains. "We're all going tomorrow."
Excitement grows inside of me. My lips automatically form a big smile. "I'd love to go. I didn't even know Forks had a beach."
Angela grins at my enthusiasm. "Well it does, and there'll be surfing and whale watching."
"Can't wait." I grin. With that, I walk over to the lunchroom snack table. As I dig though the fruit bowl for an orange, I can't help but grin to myself like a little girl. I really had no idea that Forks had a beach, and it feels like it's been so long since I've watched the roaring waves of my old local beach back in California. The idea of getting to spend time at a beach again is thrilling. I can't wait to go to La Push beach tomorrow, especially since I'll be going with my new friends.
When I finally find an orange near the bottom of the fruit bowl, I pull it out and accidentally knock an apple out of the bowl.
"Oh," I exclaim, reaching down to catch it. But before I can, the presence of someone standing in front of me causes me to recoil my hand back in surprise. I clutch the snack table for support.
It's Edward.
He manages to kick the dropped apple back up with his foot and catch it with both hands. "You seem happy . . . Rebecca," he greets. A smug grin plays on his lips for reasons I have no idea.
Feeling extremely uncomfortable, I don't look Edward in the eyes. "Nice trick," I muse, referring to the thing he did with the apple.
I lean against the snack table with one hand, the orange in the other hand. "I-I thought you didn't want to be friends," I stutter, having no idea what else to say to Edward.
He takes a small step towards me, intimidating me slightly. "I only said it'd be better if we weren't friends, not that I didn't wanna be."
"Wait . . . what?" I question, confused.
"I mean if you were smart, you'd stay away from me." He says the last part in an almost threatening way.
I look at Edward, wrinkling my brow and blinking my eyes in exasperation. "No offense," I hesitate, "but you're the one who keeps coming up to me."
Edward shows no signs of emotion. He only looks me dead in the eyes. "You don't know anything."
"Then tell me," I say with frustration, "how did you stop the truck? And don't say you had an 'adrenaline rush' because we both know that's not true."
"I'm not going to tell you," Edward says simply. "I . . . I'd rather hear your theories." He leans against the snack table, curious as to what my answers will be.
"I've come up with a bunch of things, from escaped human lab subjects to mutants." I shrug. "I'm guessing you're none of those, right?"
"No." Edward shakes his head. He pauses, appearing to think to himself for a second before speaking again. "That's all superhero stuff, right?" He pauses. "What if I'm not the hero?" He says slowly as if testing the waters between us. "What if I'm, the bad guy?"
I shake my head in disbelief. "How can you be the bad guy? You saved my life. Only heroes do that."
Edward wrinkles his brow, forcing an awkward silence to come between us. I'm tired of all these awkward pauses in our conversations. I lean my body lower against the snack table, quickly opening my mouth to diffuse the silence.
"Maybe we should just start over," I suggest. I desperately rack my brain for something to say next. "Um, my friends and I are going to the beach tomorrow. Why don't you come?" I pause awkwardly, looking down at the floor. When I gain more confidence, I look back up and make eye contact with Edward. "It'll be fun," I add shyly. This is my first time inviting someone to something. I really hope I'm not making a mistake.
Edward's lips curl up into a small smile. His smile only lasts for a second or two before it falters. "Which beach?"
"La Push, down at the Quileute Reservation. I've never been there before, but it's a beach, so, you know, I assume it's gonna be fun."
"I don't know," Edward says unsurely, shaking his head. "I just . . . "
"What's wrong with that beach?" I ask, somewhat frustrated. Of course Edward doesn't want to come, no surprise there. He acts like he wants to be around me but then pulls stuff like this. He's really just so predictable at this point.
Edward looks behind him as if checking to make sure that no one is ease-dropping on our conversation. He brings his attention back to me. "It's just a little crowded," he says.
