12 | three strikes and you're out

***********************************************************************

Today is the day, the day I'm scheduled to go on my first date with Edward Cullen. And I have to say, I'm both super nervous and really excited. He's taking me to play baseball with his family, which is going to be fun, I hope. I used to play softball when I was younger, so I have some familiarity with the sport since softball is basically the same as baseball, just with a bigger ball. However, the only thing I'm not really looking forward to is seeing Rosalie again. I can only hope that over time she's gotten somewhat used to the idea of me and Edward being together.

I'm currently sitting at the dining table, tapping my foot with anticipation on the floor. I'm wearing jeans and a long-sleeved shirt with a small jacket over it. The news forecast predicted a possible thunderstorm today, so I'm hoping that it won't ruin our date plans. Edward is a vampire, so a thunderstorm probably won't bother him much, but I'm a human, so thunderstorms can be a bit dangerous for me, especially since we're gonna be outside.

My grandparents are also downstairs. Grandma is at the sink washing dishes while Grandpa is reading a newspaper a few seats away from me at the dining table. The latest updates on the Forks' animal attacks are covering the front page.

"What time is Edward supposed to come pick you up?" Grandma asks, picking up another plate to clean.

"Any moment now," I sigh, clasping my hands together on the table and stretching.

Ding Dong.

That would be the doorbell. I go to answer it. Edward stands before me, smiling down at me.

"Come on in." I smile back. He follows me into the kitchen.

I shuffle awkwardly as my grandparents turn their attention to Edward. I notice Grandma's reaction to him immediately. She sends a smug smile my way. My eyes widen, and I shake my head quickly for her to stop. I know what she's thinking. He's handsome and cute. I really did get lucky with Edward.

"Mr. and Mrs. Flint," Edward addresses. "I want to formally introduce myself. I'm Edward Cullen."

"It's nice to meet you, Edward," Grandpa says. He puts down his newspaper and stands to his feet. He walks over to us and stretches his hand out for Edward to shake.

A minnie panic attack runs through me when I realize that Edward is going to have to touch Grandpa's hand. There's no way that Grandpa is not going to think that something is up when he feels how cold Edward's hand is.

Before I can stop him, Edward takes Grandpa's hand and shakes it. Much to my relief, I realize that Edward is wearing gloves, so Grandpa can't feel his skin. Phew, that was a close one.

Grandma puts a plate that she was cleaning down on the rack before making her way over to us.

"Edward," she hums, "it's so nice to meet you."

Edward politely greets her with a hug, careful for his skin not to make any contact with her skin. Grandma smiles at Edward fondly afterwards.

"Rebecca won't be out too late tonight," Edward explains. "She's just gonna play baseball with my family."

"Baseball?" Grandpa questions.

Edward nods. "Yes, sir, that's the plan."

"Sounds like fun." Grandpa smiles. I grin to myself, knowing my grandpa's love for anything that has to do with sports.

"I'll take good care of her. I promise," Edward says.

Edward and I begin to move towards the door when Grandma calls out to us. "Wait! I need to take a picture first."

I freeze in my tracks and groan. "Awe, do we have to?" Grandma loves to take pictures, whether it be on my first day of school or after I've won an award. But she takes WAY too many pictures for her own good. It gets annoying at times.

"Just hold on," Grandma orders. "It will just take a minute." She goes upstairs to get her camera.

Grandpa gives me a sympathetic smile to which I sigh at. He also has to deal with her excessive picture taking, so he understands how annoying it can be.

"What's wrong with taking pictures?" Edward asks innocently.

"There's nothing wrong with taking pictures," I respond. "She just takes way too many."

At that moment, Grandma comes rushing down the stairs "I got it," she says, referring to the camera in her hands. She holds it up. "Now go and stand by the door."

I go and stand by the front door, and Edward joins me. He puts his arm around my waist, which surprises me. It doesn't seem to bother him much to make physical contact with me in front of my grandparents. However, for me, I find it embarrassing. I struggle not to blush and smile like crazy.

"Smile," Grandma orders. She holds up the camera and snaps a few pictures of us. She looks down at the camera to see how the pictures came out then looks back up at us. "Let me just take a few more," she says.

I quickly shake my head. "Oh no, we have to get going." Not today, Grandma, not today. I quickly grab Edward's hand, open the front door, and head out.

"Bye," I say hastily before shutting the door.

Edward chuckles. "You really hate pictures that much." He grins.

"You'd understand if I let her keep going," I quip.

Edward chuckles again. "Maybe so." He leads me to a jeep instead of his usual Volvo.

"Where's the Volvo?" I ask.

"There's a thunderstorm coming. I wasn't going to risk getting it muddy," he explains. A light flickers in Edward's eyes, as if he just remembered something. "I have something for you." Edward puts his hand through the open window of the front passenger seat and pulls out a baseball cap. It's white with the classic stripes on it and a blue rim. "Now you'll fit right in," he says, placing it on my head.

I move my hands up to fix the cap on my head, but Edward brushes my hands out of the way. He wants to be a gentleman and fix it for me, so I let him. He adjusts the cap on my head till it's on just right then brushes some stray hairs out of my face.

"Thank you," I say when he's done. "So you guys like to play baseball?" I ask.

Edward smiles. "Well, it's the American pastime, and, uh, there's a thunderstorm coming. It's the only time we can play. You'll see why," he adds with a wink.

We get in the jeep and take off. We drive for about thirty minutes until we reach an open area in the woods. I can see a waterfall out in the distance beyond the treeline. Edward and I get out of the jeep and walk across the open grass to where the Cullens have set up a baseball field. I stay close to Edward's side as we approach them, still not quite comfortable being around his family yet.

Rosalie and Carlisle are playing around with a baseball bat while Alice is checking to make sure that all the bases are in place. Jasper is practicing his swing, and Emmett is tossing around a baseball in his hands.

When Esme notices our arrival, she takes me by the arm and leads me away from Edward. I look back at Edward, and he gives me a reluctant smile. I find it cute how embarrassed he gets when his family interacts with me.

"Hey," Esme greets, "glad you're here. We need an umpire."

Emmett walks past us. "She thinks we cheat," he taunts playfully.

"I know you cheat," Esme retorts. I chuckle at their playful bantering. In reality, the Cullens are so much like a normal human family. It's comforting.

Esme leads me to the home plate and stations me there. She puts her arm around my shoulder like a coach would to a player. "Call them as you see them, Rebecca," she directs.

"Got it." I nod. I've never been an umpire before, but being an umpire can't be too hard, right? I'm always up for a challenge, especially when it comes to sports.

Esme crouches down in front of me in the catcher position while Rosalie steps up to the plate and begins taking a few practice swings. Edward and Emmett take their places in the outfield, and Alice stations herself on the pitcher's mound while Carlisle and Jasper wait for their turns to hit the ball.

I laugh at Emmett who does a weird warm up exercise with his body. My attention then turns to Edward who has a smug grin on his face. I roll my eyes at him. He must think he's so great. Then again, I can't help but check Edward out in his baseball uniform. I hate to admit it, but he's looking extra hot today.

A sudden flash of lightning streaks across the sky. A loud rumble of thunder follows it, signaling that the storm is upon us. It causes shivers to run up my spine.

"It's time," Alice announces. Without wasting another second, Alice takes a baseball, winds up with her leg in the air, and throws a fast ball towards Rosalie.

Rosalie hits the ball effortlessly, which causes a boom to rumble through the air. She hits the ball so hard that a rush of air blows past me, making my hair blow in the wind. "Woah," I gasp.

"See why we need the thunder?" Esme grins.

"Yeah," I say.

I watch as Rosalie runs smoothly around the bases. Edward goes after the ball, but I don't see how there's any way he can get it back here in time, even with his super speed.

"There's no way she didn't get a home run," I say.

"Mmm," Esme contemplates, "Edward is very fast."

Much to my surprise, Edward manages to throw the ball back in field, right to Esme who catches it easily. Rosalie slides into home plate, but Esme touches her with the ball before she can reach it.

"Out," I announce, very much surprised with the outcome myself. I was so sure Rosalie had made a home run. I may have seen Edward run fast in the past, but clearly he can go even faster than what he has shown me.

"Out! Whew!" Emmett cheers.

Still on the ground, Rosalie scowls at Emmett, probably feeling betrayed by her mate.

Emmett spreads his arms out in defense. "Babe, come on. It's just a game," he reminds her.

Rosalie stands to her feet, glaring daggers at me. I keep my gaze on the ground, so I don't have to look her in the eyes. She still despises me. I shouldn't be surprised. I sigh when Rosalie finally brushes past me. I really wanna know what her problem is with me, but I'll have to save that for another time.

Next up to the plate is Carlisle. We all get back into our positions. Alice winds up again and pitches the ball to Carlisle. Another boom rips through the air when the bat makes contact with the ball, and Carlisle takes off running.

Both Edward and Emmett go for the ball, the two of them jumping high in the air to catch it. I'm in awe at how athletically strong the two of them are. Another flash of lighting streaks across the sky as Edward and Emmett somehow manage to crash into each other instead of catching the ball. I laugh as the brothers land on the ground next to each other in a heap, all the while Carlisle makes it around the bases for a home run.

"Nice!" I cheer, letting my inner sports-lover out. My attention then goes back to Edward and Emmett. I watch as Edward gives Emmett the middle finger, and Emmett pushes him back to the ground playfully. A big smile forms on my face at the sight of the two brothers playing around. It's nice to see Edward loosen up with his family.

Up next to the plate is Jasper. He does a cool spin and flip move with the baseball bat before getting in position to swing.

"You got this, Jasper!" I cheer.

Jasper looks back and flashes me a smile of thanks.

I feel my cheeks turn red at my comment. Since when am I this extroverted? I kind of like it. It feels nice to be myself with people who won't judge you or gossip rude things about you behind your back.

Alice winds up, lifting her leg in the air. Then she pitches another fast one to Jasper. He hits it, the impact making another boom sound. Jasper immediately takes off around the bases.

Emmett goes for the ball alone this time. He climbs up a tree to reach the ball and catch it out of the air, displaying some more impressive athleticism.

"My monkey man," Rosalie gushes. I turn to look at her, surprised at her comment. That's when I feel someone take me by the arm. I turn to see that it's Esme. She leads me up to the plate and hands me a baseball bat.

"I want you to have a chance to bat," she says.

"Um," I hesitate. I look over at Alice and remember that she's way stronger than a human being and so are her pitches. "Are you sure that's such a good idea?" I ask.

"It'll be fine," Esme assures. Esme turns to Alice who's still way out on the pitcher's mound. "Alice!" she calls. "Make this next pitch for Rebecca light, okay?"

"Got it." Alice smiles.

Esme moves away from me and takes her place behind me in the catcher's position. "Any time you're ready," she says.

"You got this," Carlisle encourages.

I take in a deep breath. Putting on a bold face and lifting the baseball bat up, I signal to Alice that I'm ready for the pitch.

She winds up and pitches me the ball, notably lighter than all her other pitches have been, thank God.

I swing the bat and miss. Embarrassment fills my stomach. I'm the first one to get a strike.

"It's okay," Esme says. "Try again."

Alice pitches me another ball. I try to concentrate more on my swing this time but miss again anyway. Heat rises to my face. I'm starting to get frustrated now. Please, God, please let me hit the next one. This is so embarrassing.

"Don't worry. You're doing great," Edward encourages me from across the field.

I give him a smile of thanks before lifting the bat up again. Alice pitches me the ball, and this time, I somehow manage to hit it. Remembering my softball days, I drop the bat and take off running towards first base. Since the Cullens are vampires, the field is larger than a normal baseball field, which means it's a longer way for me to run. The thrill of getting to play takes over me. All frustration and embarrassment becomes forgotten. I laugh as I run across the field. I mean, who can blame me? Who wouldn't be laughing if they got to play baseball with a bunch of vampires who treat you like family?

Once I'm about halfway to first base, a lightning streak flashes, and thunder roars in my ears. I suddenly stop in my tracks like a deer in headlights and take in a heavy breath of air, my breath shuddering. A pit forms in my stomach. My eyes widen in fear. Something feels wrong. Something feels very wrong. On instinct, I turn to look at Alice who has a similar expression on her face.

"Stop!" Alice cries. The force in her voice causes even more fear to fill inside of me. Something is wrong. How I was able to feel it I have no idea.

I look back at Esme, and she motions for me to come to her. Without hesitation, I book it back towards home plate. It's a good distance away from where I am which makes me feel extremely uncomfortable. I don't like the distance between me and the Cullens, not with something dangerous on the horizon.

Without warning, Edward comes from behind and lifts me up. He carries me with his super speed over to the others. "Thanks," I say after he lets me down.

"They were leaving. Then they heard us," Alice informs.

My head feels like it's spinning. "Who were leaving? Who's coming?!" I demand.

"The nomadic vampires," Edward answers. He quickly grabs my arm. "Let's go," he says.

Carlisle steps in front of us. "It's too late," he warns.

I've never seen Edward truly afraid before, but seeing his face contort in horror is enough to show me how dangerous the magnitude of this situation is for me.

"Get your hair down," he orders.

My hands move up to my ponytail automatically. I quickly take out the hair tie and spread my hair around my shoulders. I know why I'm doing this. It's to spread my scent around, so it's not too strong in just one place.

Rosalie passes by us. "Like that'll help. I can smell her from across the field," she scowls.

Panic takes its hold on me. I clutch Edward's hands, forcing him to listen to me. I look up at him with fearful eyes. "Edward, please, please, I don't wanna be here. Please take me away. They're gonna smell me. I'm scared, please." I start to breath in raspy breaths. Tears sting at the corner of my eyes. I just wanna go home.

Edward's face fills with regret and sorrow. He looks like he just got stabbed in the stomach. "There's no time. They'll see us leave and get suspicious," he explains.

I can't hold back the tears any longer. They start to fall in streams down my face. I've never been so afraid in my life.

Edward places his hands on my shoulders which forces me to look him in the eyes. "You have to stop crying," he says in a firm voice. "They'll know you're human immediately if they see those tears."

I quickly wipe away the wetness from my cheeks. Edward removes his hands from my shoulders. "I shouldn't have brought you here. I'm so sorry," he apologizes, pain filling his voice.

"It's okay," I try to assure him, but my voice sounds empty. The truth is, I don't really mean it. I'm mad, not at Edward or his family, but at myself for thinking that falling in love with a vampire wouldn't come with risks, risks that not even Edward can fully protect me from.

"Just be quiet and stand behind me," Edward orders. I follow him to the others. The rest of the Cullens are all lined up in order to greet the newcomer vampires.

I look out into the distance and already see them coming. There's three of them, a woman and two men. They approach us with swiftness and grace, like they're practically flying across the field. If I thought the Cullens were intimidating, these vampires are on a whole other level. There is no way in heck I'm going risk making eye contact with any of them.

The three of them stop a few feet away from us, eyeing us over. I keep my gaze on the ground, and my body close to Edward's. I have to be smart about this. I can't stand directly behind Edward or that'll look suspicious, and I can't have my body be right up against Edward's body either or that'll also look suspicious. I can't shiver, gulp, or take any deep breaths, all of which I so desperately want to do right now. I have to keep everything in check because just one wrong move, and I become the meal.
