five: sticking together

Men pour into the building and bullets begin to fly. I manage to get a few swings at the boarded up window, most of the concrete design falling away, when men start shooting where I'm standing. Having to duck, I see Dom charge at one of the men, causing him to fire around his people, which gives me enough time to kick out the remaining pieces blocking our way out.

"Alexis, go!" Dom shouts.

Stepping up onto the window ledge, I use as much momentum as I can, not thinking about what's below or how far is the drop, and jump. My feet buckle against the tin roof, causing me to fall on a knee. Hearing the firing of the guns, I don't take a second to think before I'm running along the tops of the building.

A loud thud sounds behind me, and with a quick look over my shoulder I see Dom running behind me. I don't stop, just keeping going, knowing Dom's right behind me.

My legs seem to be on autopilot, jumping when there's a break between building. At the edge of a building, I look behind me to see Dom still coming to land and a buff, tanned, bald man come through the window.

Jumping down onto the street, I wait for Dom to follow. When he does, he takes the lead on what directions to run. I'm just glad I'm able to keep pace with him. My legs will probably be screaming later.

Coming down a flight of stairs, I stop as Dom comes to a halt for a split second before men with their faces covering, pointing guns at us begin to fire, knowing those were the people who barged into our building earlier.

Dom grabs my arm, pushing me in front of him as we run up another flight of stairs with Dom blocking any chance of a bullet hitting me. With every turn Dom shouts out a direction to help guide me.

My breathing has increased with every passing second, knowing whoever is following us—rather it's the men with masks or the buff man with a bulletproof vest—is only a short distance behind.

Going into a narrow walkway, I notice a woman step out. Coming to a halt, Dom's front rams into my back. One of his arms wraps around my waist to prevent me from falling.

The woman has her hair pulled back into a ponytail, and my eyes take in the blue shirt and the bulletproof vest—and the gun pointed at me. Her eyes going between me and Dom. "Polícia! Get on the ground. Both of you." She pulls out a walkie-talkie. "I got Toretto and Lowell. Four block north-"

My eyes notice the men emerge and begin firing. Wrapping my arms around her middle, I force the officer out of sight and against a wall. One of my wrists slam into the concrete, the biting of metal irritates the skin. She screams Portuguese into her walkie-talkie.

Dom stands beside us, looking down at the woman with flared nostrils. "They already know who you are."

As I hear more Portuguese, I look up at Dom. As more gunfire rains down, I look up and see more men, working with the woman, taking down the men with cloth hiding their faces.

"We need to go," Dom murmurs to me.

I nod, not looking back at the woman as I follow Dom.

________

When we meet up with Brian and Mia in the tunnels, it allows me breathing to even out. "That was close," I let out a sigh, rubbing my left hand against my chest.

"Too close," Mia agrees.

As my left hand is against me, I stop. Lifting my arm away from my chest, I notice my left wrist is bare. Letting out a loud gasp, I notice the three look back at me as I begin to go into each one of my jean pockets—all empty.

"What's wrong?" Brian asks as Dom comes to me.

"Alexis."

I interrupt Dom as I shake head. "No—No!"

As I go to turn around, Dom stops me. "What is wrong?"

"Letty's bracelet—it's gone!" I let out as a cry. "I—I thought I felt something break when I saved that cop. God damnit! I need to go get it!"

"You can't."

"I need to Dom!"

His hands cup my face. "I know. I know you want to go get it right now, see if it's still there, but we can't. It's too dangerous. I'm sorry honey."

Tears prick at the back of my eyes as I burry my face in Dom's shirt; his arms coming around me to hug me close. Water moving under someone's feet can be heard as a feel another hand moving against my back.

"We'll get it back," Mia says, still rubbing my back. "Soon."

Trying to push away the emotions for now, I nod as I step away from Dom. As we continue to walk through the water in the tunnel, it feels weird not having the bracelet on my wrist. I've become accustomed to it. Brian throws an arm around my shoulders, kissing the side of my head in support.

"They're going to be looking for the four of us together now," Dom says as we exit the tunnel. "We need to split up."

"Dominic," I snap, crossing my arms against my chest. "Not this shit again."

He looks away from my glare to Brian. "You and Mia head south, Alex and I will lead them away."

"No," Mia speaks up.

"Or Alexis and Mia can go south, and we'll lead them away," Dom tries again.

"I'd think about what you just said," I seethe. "I told you not to leave me again."

Letting out a sigh, Dom nods. "Fine, Brian is with Mia, and you're with me."

Mia shakes her head. "No!"

"Dom's right," Brian adds. "Look how lucky we just out. What happens next time? We have no choice but to split up."

Mia smiles at Brian. "I'm pregnant." She looks at all of us. "I already lost my family once. I'm not going through that again."

I watch wide-eyed as Brian steps close, wrapping his arms around her. Mia's pregnant! Holy shit!

"I'm not going anywhere," Brian says before kissing her.

I let out a happy laugh and walk over to them. "Baby Blues, let me hug her!" I give Brian a little shove before throwing my arms around Mia. "Congratulations!"

Mia laughs as she hugs me back. "Thank you." When we pull away, her eyes look to her brother. "Dom? Promise me we stick together."

Dom looks at us. "I promise."

He comes to where we're standing; a smile on his face as he wraps his arms around Brian and me. We all huddle in a group hug.

"Our family just got bigger."

*third person POV*

Brian stands at the patio doorway, watching Mia and Alexis sleeping on the couch, sharing a blanket. Alexis's head resting against Mia's arm. The blonde turns to look out at their surroundings as Dom takes a drink of his beer.

"Hey Dom, what do you remember about your father?" Brian sits at the patio ledge.

Dom smiles. "My father. He used to have a barbecue every Sunday after church. For anybody in the neighborhood. If you didn't go to church, you didn't get any barbecue." He pauses for a moment. "Every single day he was in the shop, and every single night, he was at the kitchen table with Mia, helping her with her homework. Even after she went to sleep, he'd stay up for a few more hours so he could learn the next chapter and help her the next day. I remember everything about my father."

Brian looks away. "That's just it, I don't remember shit about my dad. I don't remember him yelling. I don't remember him smiling. To be honest with you, I don't even remember what the hell he looked like. I don't remember. He just—he was just never there."

"You ain't going to be like that Brian."

Both men look at Mia and Alexis. Brian takes in Mia, and Dom stares at Alexis before looking at his sister.

"We can't keep running Dom. We got to get out. We got to get out now."

Dom looks back to Alexis. "You're right." He turns to Brian. "Alexis has been telling me that for the past few weeks. She wants—needs—to settle down somewhere. And I want to give her that."

Brian smiles, drinking from his beer. "She's good for you. Keeps you in place."

The warmth in Dom's heart increases as he thinks of Alexis. "I owe her the world." He takes out the chip from one of the pockets of his pants. "We need to get out, and here's how we're going to do it. We're going to use this. We're going do one last job. We're going to take all of Reyes' money. Every dime of it, and disappear. Forever."

"New passports. New lives with no more looking over our shoulder. And we're just going to buy our freedom."

"That's right."

"You realize we're talking about going up against the most powerful guy in all of Rio?"

"Yes, we are."

"Then we're going to need a team."
