Chapter Twenty: Runaway Train

Sean shoved Mark just out the door as the Enigma fired his dart gun. Instinctively, Mark yanked Sean close and slammed the door, causing the dart to ding off the metal door as Mark locked it. Through the glass window of the door, the Enigma bared his teeth and tossed his gun to the bar. Mark let out a snarl, but Sean pushed him to run as he yelled out. "Mark, run! He's a hybrid!" Mark backed up reluctantly, snarling out. "I can take him!" The Enigma slammed into the door so hard that it dented the metal and caused Mark to pale. The Enigma slammed into wildly, the mix of deep snarls and high pitched whines making the hair on Sean's arms rise. People peaked out of their rooms and Sean managed to get Mark running when the door burst open. Sean glanced back, his heart skipping a beat. A large brown horse stumbled into the hallway, but it wasn't normal. It had a mix of brown fur and scales. It's reptilian yellow eyes glinting in the light as it opened an abnormally long mouth to reveal sharp teeth!

Its front legs had reptilian claws. While its back legs had large hooves. Its long scaly tail swayed behind it menacingly, before dashing after them! Running through the next door, Mark slammed the door and locked it barely before the Enigma slammed into the door at full speed. Cracking the window of the door, allowing its long maul to wedge in to try biting Mark's throat. Mark uppercutted the Enigma's jaw, then winced as the Enigma barely felt the blow. Locking eyes with Mark, the Enigma tried to crawl through the window like a reptile as it hissed out hungrily. "Why are you running? Fight me, big bad wolf!" Mark turned and ran after Sean, yelling out to Sean. "GO!" Sean rushed to the next door but struggled to get it open as he yelled out in a panic. "I'm trying! It's stuck!" The Enigma dropped into the hall with them, grinning devilishly from its long mouth and Sean gasped as he recognized the animal the Enigma was mixed with. He was half horse and half crocodile.

It was a lethal combination since both animals were known for being strong and the horses' long muzzle meshed well with the croc's long jaws almost too perfectly. The Enigma crept closer with a deep hiss. It had them cornered and it knew it. Mark turned to face the Enigma, ordering Sean sternly. "Keep trying! I've got him!" The Enigma snorted, lunging for Mark. Mark stood his ground until the Enigma was completely off the ground, then dodged to the side. The Enigma's jaws snapped where Mark had been, before Mark kicked the Enigma's long neck into the wall! Pinning him there with his foot, Mark tore the fire extinguisher off the wall next to him and began beating the Enigma's ribs with it. The Enigma snarled and tried to twist under Mark's foot. It bucked and slashed out with its claws, but Mark beat the Enigma relentlessly to prevent its arm from touching him. Yet, even with a beating that would have killed a human with a hit or two, the Enigma was still breathing and moving.

Sean finally got the door to open, yelling out to Mark as he rushed through it. "Mark! Come on!" Mark swatted the Enigma's face to stun it, then ripped the end off the extinguisher. A burst of white smoky froth filled the hall as Mark sprayed the contents at the Enigma's face, then tried to slam the sharp metal into the Enigma's neck. Only the sharp metal hit the Enigma's scaly skin and... didn't pierce it. It didn't even scratch it. Dropping the extinguisher, Mark coughed and backed off toward Sean. Watching the Enigma shake its head of the froth. The froth should have suffocated it, but they both watched the Enigma wipe the froth free of its face, before a scaly flap moved away from its nose and eyes. Just like a croc, it had held its breath and protected itself from inhaling any of it. Panting to himself, Mark uttered out in slight distress. "Son of bitch!" The Enigma chuckled like a horse, then dashed after them with a vicious hissing snarl. Its long jaws wide open and its tail thrashing wildly behind it.

Sean yelped, watching Mark trying to close the stubborn door. Managing to slam the door on the Enigma's throat to pin him there. The Enigma thrashed and clawed at him through the door, but Mark dented the door off the track to make it harder for the Enigma to reopen it in its stuck state. Jumping away from the Enigma's swiping claws, Mark rushed after Sean to the next car. Getting some distance from him, Sean called back. "What are we gonna do? Where do we go?!" Panting, Mark coughed out. "I don't know... Just keep running to the front!" Dashing around startled people, Sean told him. "He caught the train, Mark! We won't outrun him!" Mark coughed harder, slowing his pace a bit when he said darkly. "I'm not trying to outrun him. I'm trying to find a way to kill him. That fucker it out for blood!" At the moment, the Enigma slammed into a door that opened right behind Mark. Mark flinched, turning to see the Enigma trying to shove the door closed to get to Mark.

The civilian jumped back into his room, allowing Mark to kick the door to keep it open, blocking the Enigma from getting around it. The Enigma slammed into the door violently, snarling out through frothing spittle. "FIGHT ME, COWARD! I'll show you who's top dog, bitch!" Sean opened the next door and yelped as he almost fell off the train. He'd reached the train car door that led outside before going to the next train car. The cold air hit him so hard that it blinded him for a second or two. From the door, Mark yelled out to him. "GO! I'm right behind you!" Sean panted hard but cautiously stepped out into the cold air. Grabbing the bars, Sean reached out for the bars of the other train car. Once he got a grip, he jumped over the gap with the rattling connector piece and hugged the bars as he waited for Mark. Mark took a breath and dropped his foot from the door to bolt full speed for the gap. Reaching the gap, Mark jumped it boldly with the Enigma right on his heels!

In midair the Enigma snatched Mark's ankle with a clawed hand, yanking Mark's feet out from under him. Sean screamed as Mark fell hard and fast toward the gap. Mark's hands slammed down on the floor beside Sean, but he had nothing to grip and was being pulled back quickly. Abandoning the bars, Sean rushed to snatch Mark's wrists and braced his feet to the bars. Mark yelped but held his hands tight. The Enigma tugged on Mark's leg violently, trying to pull him from Sean's grip. As strong as the Enigma was, he was struggling to get traction with his hooves sliding on the metal. Mark glanced back, kicking with his free leg at the jaws of the Enigma as it tried to bite his legs! Sean strained to hold on as he yelped out in distress. "Mark, I don't have the strength for this... Mark...?" Mark risked looking at him, before he asked hopefully. "Sean, can you reach that?!" Sean glanced over his shoulder to see a fireman's axe mounted on the wall beside the door.

Adjusting his feet, Sean groaned as he tried to stretch himself out, letting Mark grab only one of his arms as he reached for it with his free hand. His fingers were so close to the handle, causing him to whine loudly from the strain. Mark's agonized yelp made him hesitate. Catching that the Enigma had clamped his jaws on Mark's leg and the bastard was trying to twist Mark into a death roll! Luckily, Mark was able to twist and roll with him to keep him from ripping his leg off, but the pain it was causing Mark was obvious. Sean could barely hold him normally and now with him twisting around his arm, it was harder. Frustrated, Sean summoned all his strength and pulled Mark hard to reach for the axe again. His fingers touched the wood, and he let out a loud groan as he batted at it until he could get his fingers around it. Finally gripping it, Sean yanked it off the wall and handed it quickly to Mark as he yelped out. "TAKE IT!"

Grabbing the axe, Mark wildly swung it out at the jaws clamped down on his leg. The axe cut into the Enigma's cheek, forcing him to let go of Mark with a high pitched scream! For a brief second, Sean breathed a sigh of relief, when Mark screamed out. "DON'T LET GO!" Sean jerked with a startled cry of his own, watching Mark's legs fall into the gap. His legs becoming battered by the gravel and wooden cross tracks! Mark whined and yelped in pain, trying to turn over to pull himself out. Sean's arms were already at their limit and his grip was barely holding, when he cried out. "Mark, please hurry!" Mark tossed the axe to the grate beside Sean, his arm grabbing the bar beside Sean to try and pull himself up, but the suction from the gap was trying hard to pull Mark under the train! Mark's muscles strained as he tried to pull himself up, but he was tired from fighting the Enigma and coughing from his sickness.

He was just about to get out of the gap, when the Enigma launched off the other side and half landed on Mark to shove him back down. His jaws snapping at Sean to get him to let go of Mark. Mark released Sean's hand, grabbing the bars as he was shoved back down into the gap. Thinking fast, Sean grabbed the axe and swung it at the Enigma, forcing him to jump off Mark and on top of the bars. Hissing at him, the Enigma giggled out in light deep throaty grunts. "Such a brave, little wolf you are. I'll enjoy eating you last. I'll need a soft plate cleanser." Sean hefted the axe, then gawked as Mark yelled out angrily. "Cleanse this, asshole!" Mark used his upper body strength to hold on tight as his legs shot up to grab the Enigma's long crocodile tail. Forcing it down into the gap with his weight. The Enigma hissed, trying to yank his tail up, but it was too late. His tail got caught in the metal wheel of the train car behind them, slicing it off cleanly in one rotation!

The Enigma belted out a bloodcurdling scream and Mark used that moment to tug the Enigma off the bars and into the gap with him. Snatching the bars beside Mark, the Enigma snapped its jaws at Mark's arms and throat, hissing out. "Motherfucker! I rip you to shreds!" The Enigma bravely snatched Mark's throat with one of his hands, prying Mark away from the bars and lowering him menacingly down toward the track wheel, as he hissed out psychotically. "I would have preferred to eat you... but I think you deserve to know how it feels to be... run over. LIKE A DOG!" Sean screamed, running over to the bars and the Enigma tilted Mark's neck to almost be flush with the wheel. If he released him, Mark's neck would go under the metal wheel, before his feet fell off the Enigma's waist and back into the gap. The Enigma purred loudly, licking his scaly lips, until Sean swung the axe and struck him hard in the only hand that held the Enigma to the bars.

The silver coated axe sliced right through the limb and the Enigma frantically tried to catch himself. Only... his hooves were not able to grip anything, and his only hand was too far away on Mark's throat. Without even his tail to save him, the Enigma fell into the gap. Sean dropped his axe and belted out a scream as Mark started to fall with him, but Sean managed to catch one of Mark's legs and Mark's hands rushed to grab the ledge on the other train car. The Enigma fell and the train car jerked, and it ran over the Enigma's torso. Desperately, clawing at Mark's leg, he pleaded out. "Mark! Give me your hand!" Mark eased a tired hand out to him and Sean used every bit of whatever was left of his strength to pull him safely to him. Despite his arms wanting to let go, he refused and for a short time... he felt stronger. It was only after he got Mark safely to the other side that he collapsed over his lap with exhaustion.

He could no longer move hisarms they were so tired. Pantingtogether, Mark stroked Sean's back and chuckled out. "Good job, Sean. You can count that as yourfirst kill." Sean rolled his eyes, snuggling against Mark so closely that he wanted to hide away against him andhis warmth. To Be Continued...
