44, SUDDEN ENCOUNTER

Taehyung stepped outside, the morning air crisp as he wandered around the park. His mind was heavy with thoughts of JK, and it had been three days without a word. Each day without a message from him gnawed at his chest, and even now, as he walked, the ache wouldn’t leave him alone. His phone buzzed, but it wasn’t the notification he wanted.

"Seriously? Not even a 'hey'?" he muttered, shaking his head. "Ugh, whatever..." He tried to distract himself, texting his coworker, half paying attention to the conversation.

Bzz. His phone rang, and he answered without looking, figuring it was work-related. "Yeah, yeah, I'm on my way," he said, pacing as he talked, his feet dragging through the path. His flight was in an hour, but his mind was stuck on JK. The excitement for the day was barely cutting through the frustration of waiting for that one text that never came.

Mid-conversation, while focused on his phone, he didn’t even see the car backing out until—BAM.

"What the—?!" Taehyung stumbled, the impact knocking him off his feet. He hit the ground hard, pain shooting through his knees and shoulders. The call dropped, and his phone fell from his hand, skidding away.

"Ahh, fuck... my knees..." Taehyung groaned, clutching his shoulder as he tried to sit up, his entire body pulsing with pain.

Meanwhile, Jeongguk grabbed his keys and phone, heading out the door. He scrolled through his messages absentmindedly as he walked to his car, still nothing from V. Every time he checked, it just hurt more. He opened the door, got in, and started the engine, still glued to his screen, scrolling through old messages from V, wondering if something went wrong.

"God, what’s wrong with me..." he muttered, barely paying attention to the road as he pulled out of his parking spot. His mind was a mess, lost in thoughts about V and what could've gone wrong between them. Was it something he said? Was V just busy?

Then it happened. Thud.

"Shit!" Jeongguk slammed on the brakes, heart pounding. He’d barely seen the guy stumbling back from the hit, his knees buckling as he hit the ground.

"Oh crap, oh crap—" Jeongguk jumped out of the car, rushing to the guy. His mind was racing, and his hands were shaking as he crouched next to him.

"Oh shit, oh shit—hey, are you okay?!"

Taehyung looked up, squinting through the pain to see a guy rushing toward him. He was tall, dark hair slightly messy, eyes wide with panic.

"Do I look okay?" Taehyung snapped, wincing as he tried to move. "I have a flight, man! I don’t have time for this!"

Jeongguk felt like a complete idiot. He’d been too busy messing with his phone, lost in thoughts of V, that he didn’t even see the guy behind his car. "I swear, I didn’t see you. I’m so sorry. Dude, let me help you—" He reached out, grabbing Taehyung’s arm to help him stand, but the guy winced hard, sucking in a breath.

"God, that hurts! Watch it!" Taehyung barked, gritting his teeth. He tried to stand but stumbled, his knee giving out. "Shit!"

Jeongguk frowned, worry creeping up on him. "No way you're okay, man. I’m a doctor, let me help." He didn’t wait for a response, hooking his arm under Taehyung’s, practically lifting him off the ground.

"Are you serious right now?" Taehyung cursed, his shoulder throbbing as Jeongguk pulled him toward the car. "I don’t need—"

"Yeah, you do," Jeongguk cut him off, opening the passenger door and easing Taehyung into the seat. "You’re not walking that off. Trust me, I know."

Taehyung groaned, letting his head fall back against the headrest. "This is not happening... I’m already late."

Jeongguk quickly got in the driver’s seat, glancing over at him. "You’re a pilot, right? Well, guess what? You can’t fly with a busted shoulder. Let’s get you checked out first, alright?"

Taehyung glared at him, clearly pissed but too sore to argue. "Fine. Just drive."

Jeongguk sped off, checking on him out of the corner of his eye. "Look, I'm really sorry. I wasn’t paying attention. You gonna make it through this, Captain?"

Taehyung rolled his eyes. "Shut up and focus on the road. If you crash this car, I swear..."

Jeongguk let out a small laugh, shaking his head. "Noted. No more distractions." But even as he said it, his thoughts kept drifting back to V, the unanswered messages sitting heavy in the back of his mind.

Taehyung shifted in the seat, wincing again. "This better not take long... I’ve got places to be."

Jeongguk smirked, glancing over at him. "You’re really bad at saying thanks, you know that?"

"Yeah, well, you're really bad at driving." Taehyung shot back, arms crossed, trying to ignore the pain in his shoulder.

Jeongguk stood there, watching the guy walk away. "Damn... what a way to start the day."

Once Jeongguk and Taehyung arrived at the hospital, Jeongguk rushed through the doors, keeping a steady grip on Taehyung.

"Come on, let’s get you in," Jeongguk said, helping Taehyung into the waiting area. "I’m really sorry about this. I didn’t see you at all."

Taehyung, wincing with each step, shot him a pained look. "Yeah, I noticed. My shoulder’s killing me, man. And I’m gonna be so late for my flight."

"Look, you’ll be fine," Jeongguk said, guiding him to a seat. "I’ll get someone to check you out. Just hang tight."

Taehyung slumped into the chair, gritting his teeth. "You better hope this doesn’t mess up my whole day. I’m already stressed out as it is."

Jeongguk nodded, already buzzing for a nurse. "Hey, I need my cabin free to take a look at this guy," he called out, pointing to Taehyung. "He got hit by a car, and I think he’s pretty messed up."

Jeongguk led Taehyung into a small examination room, his worry showing despite his calm facade. "Alright, sir, let’s get you into a room and get you checked out. Can you tell me where it hurts the most?"

Taehyung grumbled, "My shoulder and knees. Everything’s sore. Can’t believe I’m dealing with this."

"Alright, let's get you settled here," Jeongguk said, helping Taehyung onto the exam table. "Just try to relax. I'm gonna check you out."

Taehyung shot him a skeptical look. "Wait, you’re a doctor, right? Because you’re making me nervous with how you’re handling me. Did my car hit a doctor or something?"

Jeongguk chuckled, pulling on a pair of gloves. "Yeah, I’m a bone doctor. So yeah, you could say you hit a pro. Just don’t worry, I’m good at this."

Taehyung raised an eyebrow. "A bone doctor, huh? Seems like you should’ve been paying more attention to the road."

"Touché," Jeongguk said, focusing on Taehyung’s shoulder. "I’m sorry. Really. Let’s see what’s messed up here."

As he examined Taehyung’s shoulder, Taehyung winced and muttered, "Geez, a little gentler, please. I’ve had enough trauma for today."

Jeongguk smirked. "Trauma from being hit by a car? Or trauma from waiting for me to fix you up?"

"Both," Taehyung grumbled. "And if this keeps up, I might just start considering a new career—one that doesn’t involve getting hit by distracted drivers."

"Hey, at least you’ve got a personal doctor now," Jeongguk said, trying to lighten the mood. "Think of it as a free consultation."

"Lucky me," Taehyung replied dryly. "Though I’m still not thrilled about having my day messed up because of your phone."

Jeongguk chuckled again. "Yeah, I owe you one. Maybe I can buy you a coffee after this. Once you’re not hurting anymore."

Taehyung rolled his eyes. "A coffee? That’s it? How about you start by not hitting people with your car?"

"I’ll work on that," Jeongguk said, giving Taehyung’s shoulder one last check. "Alright, you should be good. I’ll get you some pain meds and make sure you’re set to go."

Taehyung smirked. "Well, thanks, Doc. You might not be great at driving, but at least you’re decent at fixing me up."

Jeongguk laughed. "Yeah, just don’t make it a habit to get get hit by my car. I’d rather avoid it."

"Agreed," Taehyung said, wincing as he tried to stand. "Now, let's see if you can make sure I actually get to my flight in one piece."

Jeongguk nodded. "Deal. I'll get you sorted and make sure you're out of here on time. You've got my word."

As they wrapped up, Jeongguk felt a small sense of relief. Taehyung might be in pain, but at least they'd managed to turn a bad situation into something a bit lighter.

After Taehyung was patched up and given pain meds, he stumbled out of the clinic, still feeling a bit shaky. Jeongguk followed him, carrying Taehyung's bag and trying to keep the mood light.

"Alright, Captain, you're all set," Jeongguk said, handing him the bag. "How's the shoulder feeling?"

Taehyung winced but managed a small smile. "Better, thanks. But let's be real, my whole day's still messed up."

"Yeah, sorry about that," Jeongguk said, scratching his head. "I'm really not the best at mornings or driving, apparently."

Taehyung chuckled despite the pain. "Well, you've got a unique skill set. Hitting people and then fixing them up."

Jeongguk grinned. "Hey, it's not every day you get to play hero and doctor. At least I didn't just leave you on the side of the road."

"True," Taehyung said, glancing at his watch. "So, you still owe me that coffee. You free after work?"

"Yeah, definitely," Jeongguk replied, nodding. "I'll make it up to you. And maybe after that, I'll finally get a text back from V."

Taehyung's eyes softened. "Still no word from V, huh? That sucks, man."

"Yeah, it's been rough," Jeongguk admitted. "But hey, at least today wasn't a total disaster. And now I've got a chance to make things right with you."

"Alright, alright," Taehyung said, wincing as he tried to adjust his shoulder. "Let's just get me to this flight. I really need to get going."

Jeongguk nodded. "Got it. I'll drop you off. And don't worry, I'll keep my eyes on the road this time."

As they drove, Taehyung glanced at Jeongguk. "So, about that coffee... we better make it a good one. And no more accidents."

Jeongguk laughed. "Deal. And hey, if you need a ride again, just let me know. I promise I'll be more careful."

"Thanks," Taehyung said, smiling despite the discomfort. "I appreciate it. And let's hope next time we meet, it's not because of a crash."

Jeongguk grinned. "Agreed. Here's to hoping for better luck next time. And maybe some good news from V."

As they reached the airport, Taehyung turned to Jeongguk. "Thanks for everything, Doc. See you soon, and try not to hit any more people, alright?"

Jeongguk chuckled. "I'll do my best. Safe flight, Captain."

Taehyung gave him a quick, appreciative nod before heading into the airport. As Taehyung disappeared through the terminal doors, Jeongguk sighed, hoping the rest of his day would be less eventful.

Both of them drove off in different directions, unaware they had just collided with the one person they were both thinking about.

Taehyung had wandered out of the park, lost in thought, trying to figure out how to untangle his work and personal life. He was so deep in his head that he didn’t notice where he was going. Meanwhile, Jeongguk, just out for a walk, was distracted by his phone, scrolling through messages and not paying attention to his surroundings.

As Taehyung rounded a corner, he collided with Jeongguk, knocking them both off balance. They crashed into each other, landing in a heap on the grass.

"Fuck!" Taehyung cursed, rubbing his shoulder.
"Ugh, watch where you're—" Taehyung started, looking up to see who he’d run into. "Wait, aren’t you the guy from the clinic?"

Jeongguk, who had been lost in thought, rubbed his side where he’d been jostled. "Oh, great. Just my luck. You again."

"Yeah, looks like it," Taehyung said, smirking despite the annoyance. "What are you doing here? Trying to cause more accidents?"

Jeongguk raised an eyebrow, grinning. "Maybe I just like the idea of bumping into you. Or maybe I'm just cursed."

"Could be both," Taehyung replied, crossing his arms. "So, did you follow me here or is this just a really bad coincidence?"

Jeongguk chuckled. "If I was following you, I'd be doing a better job of it. I'm just out here for a walk. And you?"

Jeongguk groaned, sitting up and glaring at Taehyung. "Dude, I could ask you the same thing. You're not exactly invisible."

"Yeah, well, you were glued to your phone, weren’t you?" Taehyung snapped, trying to get his bearings. "How about looking up for once?"

Jeongguk shot him a look. "Oh, so now it's my fault you don't know how to watch where you're walking? Real classy."

"Classy? Ha!" Taehyung rolled his eyes. "You're the one who almost knocked me out. And from the looks of it, you might need to pay more attention to where you're stepping. Or texting."

Jeongguk stood up, brushing grass off his pants. "Says the guy who walked right into me. Ever think about maybe, I don’t know, looking where you're going?"

Taehyung scoffed, dusting himself off. "And maybe you should start paying attention to your surroundings instead of your damn phone."

"Look, I was in the middle of something important," Jeongguk said, crossing his arms. "Not like I expected to get bulldozed by someone not paying attention."

"Yeah, well, I wasn’t expecting to get hit by a car or whatever that was," Taehyung shot back. "Maybe you should get your head out of your screen and into the real world."

Jeongguk rolled his eyes. "If you weren’t so busy stumbling around, I wouldn’t have to worry about it. Maybe try not being a walking hazard."

Taehyung glared at him, clearly annoyed. "Whatever. Just stay out of my way next time. I've got better things to do than deal with your clumsy ass."

Jeongguk huffed. "And I've got better things to do than dodge idiots who can’t navigate a sidewalk. So, how about we both just watch where we're going?"

"Deal," Taehyung snapped. "And maybe keep your phone in your pocket next time."

Jeongguk shook his head, chuckling despite himself. "Fine, fine. But next time, maybe you’ll get the hint to pay attention."

Taehyung shot him one last irritated look before turning to leave. "Yeah, yeah. Later."

As they went their separate ways, both grumbling under their breaths, they couldn’t help but smirk at the ridiculousness of the encounter.

Jeongguk stumbled into his apartment, still grumbling under his breath. Bam, his loyal dog, wagged his tail and barked, looking up at him with curious eyes.

"Hey, Bam," Jeongguk said, scratching the dog's head. "You won’t believe the day I’ve had."

He plopped down on the couch, pulling out his phone to text V, only to remember he hadn’t heard from him in days. He sighed and began recounting the mess of his day to Bam.

"So, first, I accidentally hit this dude with my car," Jeongguk said, shaking his head. "Like, I swear I didn’t see him. Totally my bad. Then, wouldn’t you know it, I run into him again at the park. He crashes into me this time."

Bam looked at him, head tilted, as if trying to understand the story.

"Yeah, I know. Weird, right?" Jeongguk continued, pulling a face. "We went back and forth, cursing each other out. It was kinda funny but also super annoying."

He stared at the ceiling, his mood shifting. The playful irritation he’d felt before faded into a deep, gnawing sadness. He pulled out his phone, seeing V’s name still absent from his messages.

"But you know what? None of that crap even matters," Jeongguk said, his voice softening. "I just... I miss him, Bam. I miss V so much. I’m trying to stay cool, but this silence? It’s eating me alive."

He stared at the empty screen, his fingers hovering over the keyboard, but he couldn’t bring himself to type. "I just want to hear from him, you know? It’s driving me nuts."

Bam nudged him, sensing his distress. Jeongguk scratched his head absently, looking at the photo of V he had saved on his phone. His expression softened, eyes filled with longing.

"V, where are you? I hope you’re okay. I really do," Jeongguk whispered, his frustration giving way to a deep sense of missing someone he cared about.

He leaned back, letting out a heavy sigh. "Gonna take it easy tonight, Bam. No more drama. Just... missing V and hoping he gets in touch soon."

Bam curled up next to him, offering a silent, comforting presence as Jeongguk stared at the phone, hoping for some good news.
