Let the Main Character Drive the Story: A Bonus Guide for Writers

Whether your story is plot-driven or character-driven, your main character should guide readers through the narrative.

After discussing storyboarding, world-building, character arcs, and magic systems in my previous guides, I'm excited to share this bonus guide. It focuses on the essential role of the main character in shaping your story.

At the heart of every story are key questions that reveal the narrative. Your main character's decisions create conflict and resolution, distinguishing them from supporting characters. Here are some important questions to help you develop your main character and story:

Questions for the Main CharacterWho is your main character? (Brief description or background)What does he/she want? (Goals)What's stopping him/her from getting it? (Obstacles)What happens if they don't achieve their goal? (Stakes)What actions do they take? Why don't those actions work? How does the story end?Questions for the StoryWhat is the story about? What is the genre/theme?What are the major conflicts? What are the main goals or intentions? What is the solution or alternative solutions? What is the major event or twist? What is the conclusion?

Remember, all decisions and paths should be led by your main character, not the side characters or the villain.

To make your story more engaging, present it as a series of questions. Create scenes that encourage readers to think alongside the character, making them feel invested in the outcome.

A quick note: I've learned these lessons from mentors and through my own writing journey. Feel free to adapt these ideas to better suit your story. With thoughtful revision, you can transform your narrative into something truly special.
