Chapter 2: MACUSA and No-Maj
"Come on." She said as she drags Newt and I towards a tall, ornately carved skyscraper. "Er--sorry, but we do have things to do, actually." Newt replied but the woman still tugs on his coat sleeve with one hand and my wrist with her other hand. "Well, you'll have to rearrange them!" She snapped at us and guides us through the busy traffic.
"What are you two doing in New York anyway?" She asked us.
"We came to buy a birthday present." I said, not telling her what we were really doing there.
"Couldn't you have done that in London?" She asked.
"No, there's only one breeder of Appaloosa Puffskeins in the world and he lives in New York, so no...." Newt said as she moves us towards a side door which was guarded by a man in a uniform. "I got a Section 3A." She said to the man and the three of us walk through the door.
"Hey. By the way, we closed that guy down a year ago. We don't allow the breeding of magical creatures in New York." She said and we walk into the MACUSA's main lobby. I stare around this place in awe.
High above us, a gigantic dial with many cigs and faces emblazoned with the legend: Magical Exposure Threat Level. The hand on the dial points to Severe: Unexplained Activity. And behind that was a portrait of a witch named Seraphina Picquery, the MACUSA president.
The woman guides us through the bustle towards an elevator that's being operated by a goblin. "Hey, Goldstein." The goblin said to the woman, Goldstien. "Hey, Red." She said as she pushes Newt and I inside.
"Major Investigation Department." Goldstein said.
"I thought you was--" Red started to say but Miss Goldstein cut him off.
"Major Investigation Department! I got a Section 3A!" And Red uses a long clawed stick to reach a button that was above his head and the elevator descends. I look over at Newt and see that he has an annoyed and worried look on his face. I place my hand in his and stroke the back of his hand with my thumb. He looks over at me and I give him a sympathetic smile and he gives me a small smile as the elevator stops and Miss Goldstein grabs my arm, still holding Newt's hand, and pulls us out of the elevator.
"Whatever it is, one thing's clear--it must be stopped. It's terrorizing No-Majs and when No-Majs are afraid, they attack. This could mean exposure. It could me war." I hear a woman say as the three of us cautiously approach a group of people, who looked like they were having some kind of meeting.
One of them, which I realized it was the MACUSA president, turns around to face us. "I made your position here quite clear, Miss Goldstein." She said, obviously angry but she was containing it really well.
"Yes, Madam President, but I--" Goldstein said, frightened but the president interrupts her.
"You are no longer an Auror." She said. 'Oh interesting!' I thought as Goldstein said. "No, Madam President, but--"
"Goldstein." The president said, sternly.
"There's been a minor incident--" Goldstein started to argue.
"Well this office is currently concerned with very major incidents. Get out." said the President.
"Yes, ma'am." Goldstein said, humiliated, and she pushes us back towards the elevator.
After another elevator ride, we enter in a cramped, airless, windowless basement room. Goldstein leads us past a hundred typewriters clacking away unmanned with a tangle of glass pipes hanging down from the ceiling above us. She walks us towards a dingy corner with a sign that said: Wand Permit Office, hanging over it. Newt, of course him being so tall, ducks under it as we walk towards Goldstein's desk.
"So, do you two have a wand permit? All foreigners have to have them in New York." She said as she removes her coat and hat.
"We made a postal application weeks ago." Newt lied as he lets go of my hand, which to be honest I forgot I was still holding. Goldstein sits down on her desk and starts to scribble on a clipboard. "Scamander.....(L/N).....and you two were just in Equatorial Guinea?" She asked us.
"We completed a year in the field." I replied.
"I'm writing a book about magical creatures and she's assisting me." Newt said.
"Like an extermination guide?" She asked us. I look at her appalled and said. "Merlin's beard, no!"
"It's a guide to help people understand why we should be protecting these creatures instead of killing them." said Newt and then a voice shouts. "GOLDSTEIN! Where is she? Where is she? GOLDSTEIN!" And then Goldstein ducks behind her desk which I can't help but smile and hold back a chuckle.
I look over at Newt and he has the same look as well as a man walks over to us and said. "Goldstein!" She slowly emerges from behind her desk, looking guilty. "Did you just butt in on the Investigative Team again?" The man asked.
Goldstein was about to answer but the man talks over her. "Where have you been?"
"What....?" She asked, awkwardly, and the man turns to us and asked.
"Where'd she pick you two up?" Newt looks over at me then the both of us look over at the man.
"Us?" Newt asked, pointing between me and him.
I look over at Goldstein and she shakes her head at me. "Have you been tracking them Second Salemers again?" He asked her. "Of course not, sir." replied Goldstein as we hear footsteps approaching.
"Afternoon, Mr Graves, sir!" I turn around and see a man in a black suit with slick back black hair.
"Afternoon, ah--Abernathy." Graves said.
"Mr Graves, sir, this is Mr Scamander and Miss (L/N)--they have a crazy creature in that case and it got out and caused mayhem in a bank, sir." Goldstein said, quickly.
"Let's see the little guy." Graves said and Goldstein grabs Newt's case and takes it over to another desk.
"Oh, please be careful." I said, desperately, as Newt looks around in panic.
Goldstein places the case on a desk and throws open the lid. Newt and I approach the desk, nervously, but see that the case is full of pastries.
I look over at Newt and both of us have the same horrified face. 'If we have this case, then that means that muggle accidentally took Newt's case.' Graves looks at the case confused then sighs and shakes his head. "Tina..." He muttered as he walks away. Newt, Tina and I stare at each other.
"I can't believe you two didn't Obliviate that man! If there's an inquiry, I'm finished!" Tina said, sounding like she on the verge of tears, as we walk along a busy street. "So why would you be finished? We're the one that's--" Newt said but Tina cut him off. "I'm not supposed to go near the Second Salemers!" She shouted and I look up and see a Billywig zooming over our head.
Horrified, I spin around and watch the creature fly away. I look back at Newt and he looks horrified as well. "What was that?" Tina asked us. "Er--moth, I think. Big moth." I replied as we approach a corner full of people with a muggle policeman stand in the middle of the crowd.
We move around the outskirts of the crowd as people yell at the policeman. "Hey....hey--quiet down--I'm trying to get a statement..." The policeman said. "....I'm telling you it's a gas explosion again, I ain't taking the kids back up there until it's safe." yelled a woman. "Sorry ma'am--there ain't no smell of gas." The policeman said.
Newt and I glance over at each other and nod, knowing that this is the work of some of our creatures. "It warn't gas--hey Officer, I seen it! It wuzza--a gigantic--a huge hippopotto---" a drunk man shouted and I pointed my wand at the man as Newt and I walk past him. "--gas. It was gas!" The man said and the crowd agrees and start to cause trouble for the policeman as Newt and I sneak past them and walk into the wrecked building.
We get into the building and enter a room that is completely destroyed, broken furniture, shattered glass and a massive hole on the wall. Suddenly, I hear a groaning sound and see the man lying in the corner. "Newt." I said and he looks over at me and I jerk my head to the direction of the muggle.
Newt crouches down beside the man, who has his eyes closed and is moaning. Newt looks over at the muggle and points out to me the bite on his neck. 'Looks like a Murtlap bite.' I think as Newt tries to examine the bite but the muggle keeps batting him away, unconsciously.
"Mr Scamander! Miss (L/N)!" I hear Tina holler at us.
"Check the case, I'll repair this." I whisper to him.
I pull out my wand and perform the Repairing charm while Newt sits on the bed, grabs his case and calmly seals the latches on it as Tina walks in. "It was open?" She asked as I put away my wand. "Just a smidge..." Newt replies, innocently.
"That crazy Niffler thing's on the loose again?" She asked.
"It might be." I said.
"Then look for it! Look!" Tina said to us, urgently, as the muggle moans again.
Tina drops the pastry case and makes straight for the injured muggle. "His neck's bleeding, he's hurt! Wake up, Mr No-Maj...." Tina said with worry. As Newt and I start to head towards the door, we hear her let out a guttural scream. We turn around and see that the Murtlap has jumped out and latches onto her arm. Newt grabs the creature by the tail as I grab his case, open it enough to for him to shove the Murtlap in it.
"Mercy Lewis, what is that?" Tina asked with fear.
"Nothing to worry about." Newt muttered.
"That is a Murtlap." I replied as Newt shuts the case.
"What else have you two got in there?" She asked.
"You!" said a voice and we turn around and see that the muggle is awake now.
"Hello." Newt and I said to him.
"Easy, Mr...." Tina trailed off.
"Kowalski....Jacob...." Mr Kowalski said.
Tina takes his hand and shakes it as Newt raises his wand and points it at Kowalski. Tina, then, moves in front of him, protectively and said. "You can't Obliviate him! We need him as a witness."
I sigh and roll my eyes as Newt said. "I'm sorry--you just yelled at us the length of New York for not doing it in the first place...."
"He's hurt! He looks ill!" She said.
"He'll be fine. Murtlap bites aren't serious." I said as Newt puts his wand away and Kowalski retches into the corner while Tina looks at us in disbelief. "I admit that is a slightly more severe reaction than I've seen, but if it was really serious---he'd have...." Newt stops as he doesn't want to scare Tina and Mr Kowalski.
"What?" She asked as she looks between us.
"Well the first symptom would be flames out of his anus..." I started to say and Mr Kowalski starts to feel the seat of his pants while Tina shouts. "This is balled up!"
"It'll last 48 hours at most! We can keep him if you want us to--"
"Oh, keep him? We don't keep them!" Tina said, interrupting Newt.
She stands up and sighs. "Mr Scamander and Miss (L/N), do you two know anything about the wizarding community in America?" She asked us, arms folded across her chest.
"Well, we do know a few things, actually." I replied.
"We know you have rather backwards laws about relations with non magic people. That you're not meant to befriend them, that you can't marry them, which seems mildly absurd to me." Newt said as I nod in agreement.
"Who's going to marry him?" Tina asked us as she points at Mr Kowalski. "You three are coming with me--" she said and, once again, I roll my eyes.
"I don't see why (y/n) and I need to come with you--" Newt said as Tina turns around and tries to pick up Mr Kowalski.
"Help me!" She begs. I let out an exasperated sigh and look over at Newt, who gives me a look that says 'we have to'. I shake my head and the both of us bend down and help Mr Kowalski to his feet.
"I'm...I'm dreaming, right? Yeah....I'm tired, I never went to the bank. This is all just some big nightmare, right?" Mr Kowalski asked.
"For the both of us, Mr Kowalski." Tina replied and the three of us with Mr Kowalski Disapparate.
