Solving A Broken Heart
Virgil sat next to the newly married couple, on Deceit's' right. Remus sat on Deceit's' left, making his brother the centre of the tables' head. Roman glared at Virgil from across the table but the emo didn't meet his gaze.
Roman didn't want to glare at him. Roman wanted to hug him and cry. But he didn't. Because Virgil had been mean to Joan and Joan still seemed upset.
The Light Prince glanced across his father to Joan, who sat on Philip's' right. The knight seemed to not want to meet Roman's' eyes, focusing on their food or Patton.
"Joan?" Roman asked, forcing the non-binary knight to focus on him. "You want to hang out after this? Ooh, we can go to that meadow!"
"T-The meadow?"
"Yeah, y'know. The really pretty looking one-"
A beautiful silver tray that housed a large amount of fish exploded and bits of salmon went flying. A fresh cod smacked King Philip in the face, much to Remus's' amusement who laughed at him very loudly.
Joan swallowed. "My god..." they whispered, staring at the smoking silver ash that remained of the tray. Virgil flushed.
Roman blinked, then giggled, then burst out in laughter, quickly joined by everyone except Joan and Virgil.
"That was a good one, Dee!" Remus cackled, looking at his new husband. "Could've told me!"
"Aw, c'mon you old octopus! I know it was you, don't blame me!" Laughed Deceit until both stopped laughing and stared at each other.
They swivelled around to face Virgil who stood up and pushed away his plate. "I'm not hungry. I'll see you all..." He met Deceit's' gaze and wilted but didn't stop walking away, "...soon." And he left, closing the door quietly behind him.
The room was silent now, everyone wondering what the hell had just happened. Deceit sighed, standing up with a cross expression. "He is not pulling this shit on my union day," Mumbled the King in annoyance and stormed off to follow Virgil.
"Now, kids, don't worry!" Remus laughed, gaining everyone's attention as he stole some food from his husband's' plate. "Deceit's gonna get Virge to eat something! He wouldn't let that boy get away with anything."
Patton smiled slightly. "Ahaha! Cool..." He murmured, not entirely understanding but definitely feeling awkward.
Joan cleared their throat as conversation slowly started up again. "I don't think that-that I'll be able to meet you on the m-meadow, Ro... Maybe invite someone else?" Roman looked at them as Joan continued cutting up the same piece of beef he'd been cutting up last time Roman tried to talk to him despite it being gristle, "Maybe Virgil? H-He looks like he needs to relax... And the meadow is a very relaxing p-place."
"You sure?" Frowned Roman.
"Mhm!" Their voice broke.
"Okay..."
Roman felt the conversation veer to an awkward halt and he looked at his meal. It was his third plate, as the food served was a buffet. He wouldn't miss it - to be honest he was just eating because it was delicious.
Virgil had only taken a small plate filled with starters. Roman risked a glance across the table: it was untouched but his fork was gone. Along with his knife. And his dessert spoon.
Roman stood up, checking his watch to think of a plausible excuse. "I'm kinda tired, I'm gonna hit the hay. G'Night."
"Roman, speak properly." Lectured his father.
The young prince rolled his eyes. "I'm rather tired, so I shall return to my bedroom and attempt slumbering in my bed. I bid you all a fair night."
"Thank you, Roman." Smiled his father.
Roman smiled back and left with a loud yawn. He exited and instantly saw Deceit scowling at Virgil down the corridor.
.:*:.
"Virgie, I'm not letting you get away with this!"
"I'll eat breakfast tomorrow, I promise..."
"That's not what I'm talking about and you know it!"
Virgil's' fist burst into a purple flame as his voice reverberated off the walls, "Shut up, it's fine! I can handle it, you fool!"
Deceit stared. He spoke with a snake-like quality as he spat, "Don't you dare call me a fool, or I'll sssssend you home and you will never get the chanccccce to tell a cccccertian sssssomeone that-!"
"Shut up, Deceit! It's bloody fine! It's all bloody fine! Leave me alone!" Virgil hissed before he took a step back and vanished. Deceit hissed loudly at the empty spot where his brother was and Roman bolted to the other side of the hallway and ducked behind a fancy cabinet as Deceit stormed back into the dining hall.
Roman waited for the chatter to arise in the other room before running off. He ran to his room. Why? Because it was the one place in the castle Virgil had been. He looked first in his bed because he knew Virgil liked to hide in comfy places.
Nothing.
Roman threw open his closet, checking the ground floor first, then the upper level. He paused briefly. It still looked like the secret den they'd set up before they left. Everything was the same. Pulling out of his reminiscing and focusing on Virgil, Roman thought and thought and thought.
Sifting through memories, he sat down and clutched at his head.
Then it clicked.
Virgil liked bathtubs.
Virgil had told him that while they were travelling. He said it made him feel safe and warm, how the smooth walls would close around him.
Roman smiled despite himself. His private bathroom. That's were the emo nightmare was.
.:*:.
Roman saw the black boots kicked up by the faucets of the bath the moment he entered. Swiftly, he saw the purple hair sticking out of the other end.
"H-Hey, Virge..." He coughed, clearing his throat, and tried again. "Hi..."
"What do you want?"
Roman swallowed, walking slowly over to the bathtub. "I just wanted to know if you..." He trailed off, sinking down next to the bath. His hands felt sweaty and sticky but they were dry and smooth. His throat was clenched but he could still breathe. He could hear Virgil's' steady movements from the inside the bath, feeling the emo prince's' head turn to him. "I was hoping you'd want to join me in the meadow... It-It's really pretty?"
Virgil didn't answer for a while. "Why?"
"Because... Because I wanna apologise... For calling-"
"For calling me Anxiety?" Virgil finished. His voice was cold.
"Yeah, th-that.." Whimpered Roman. He heard more shifting and felt a hand placed on his head. For a moment, he thought that Virgil had forgiven him and that it was all going to be fine. Then the hand ruffled his hair, messing it up from its' perfectly gelled style. "Hey! Why?"
Virgil snorted. "Because you deserved it, Princey. Now, where's this meadow?"
.:*:.
Virgil's' mouth was slightly ajar as he stared at the meadow in awe. "This place is pretty..."
"Yeah, it is," Roman muttered in agreement, gazing at Virgil.
The smaller prince grabbed Roman's' hand, dragging him across the starlit field in delight. "We have nothing like this in the Dark Realm!" He cried happily, turning to Roman suddenly. With such a short warning of their halt, Roman stumbled, tripping into Virgil and knocking them both to the ground.
Virgil stared up into Roman's' eyes in wide-eyed surprise - the two had landed softly in a pile of autumn leaves so it hadn't hurt. Roman was lying on top of Virgil and pulled himself up with a large blush on his face. The two stared at each other for at least five minutes.
"Uh-Uhm..." Squeaked Roman, pushing himself off Virgil. Virgil coughed, sitting up and tucking his legs in away from the other prince. "Sorry," Roman mumbled in embarrasment, "I tripped..."
"It's not your fault, I shouldn't have slowed down so quickly..." Virgil replied, eyes diverted. He glanced at Roman, who was staring nervously at the grass.
Virgil uncurled himself silently, moving slowly until he was closer to Roman. Taking the Light Prince's' hand in his, Virgil finally got his attention. Roman turned to face him in mild confusion and Virgil took his shot.
He kissed him firmly on the lips and felt Roman's' surprised protest die quickly.
And the two sat there in the pretty meadow as it began to rain.
