lesson 4-Fanfiction logic

Everyone knows fanfiction logic. It's when something does not make any sense in either reality or in that situation, scene, or character.

Some examples are when characters just accept something is true without question, going totally out of character. Or when they magically have what they need, again no questions asked.

Fanfiction logic is a good copout for writers. But if you want to go beyond simple fanfiction- maybe go to a more professional fanfic platform, or even writing a real book, you need to stop the fanfic logic. Because what fanfic logic is in actuality, is just plot holes.

Plot holes can disintegrate a book. It's like pulling that one loose string in your favorite sweater which causes it to unravel. Plot holes break the illusion of the book- be it set in reality or a fantasy world. They make it unbelievable. And that's the thing about good books, no matter where it's set or what magical, unbelievable thing is going on, if it doesn't make sense to the reader, it will loose them and make the book less than what it could be.

How to fix it: After you type a paragraph reread it. This is a good way to do a lot of stuff at once without being overwhelmed especially with big chapters. You can check for spelling, make sure what you wrote makes sense and find mistakes. Breaking anything into small pieces, be it chores, homework or writing has been proven to stop procrastination and make what you have to do not seem so big and daunting and maybe even fun.

What you can also do is make notes to the side, on google docs they have this feature. Or highlight important things that might come up later. You can also hint something from the future (foreshadow) then side note what you actually want to do later in the story so you won't forget.

Make a timeline or use a calendar. Some fantasy or otherworldly stories don't use our method of time but if it has our seasons or time then pretending like it is happening by writing it down like a calendar will help you keep track what is going on and how long it's been for the characters.

For example: say your writing a fantasy novel and you need your characters to retrieve this Jewel from a hermit in the swamps. To get there they need a key that transports them. Well where do they get the key? What's the limit of times you can use it? Are there drawbacks to using it? You decide that the key has unlimited power with no drawbacks but the jewel doesn't. Great. Now you decide they find the key in a market and use it. Great, except for the fact these characters are street rats. So they are very cautious. So logically they wouldn't even think about taking the key much less using it. Thus creating a fanfic logic.
