You awoke to the light tapping on your shoulder.
Darkness swayed around you, but as you turned over, you could see Gabriel sit in front of your bed, his dark eyes slightly glowing in the moonlight that shone through the curtains.
He had his brows furrowed the tiniest bit, the corner of his mouth pointing down, and he tugged at the end of his shirt, like a five-year-old who was afraid to wake his parents.
Humming, you narrowed your eyes at him, cupping his cheek in your left hand.
He leaned in to your touch, holding back a sniff, but you saw the tears anyway.
Another nightmare.
You smiled warmly at him, lifting the covers of your bed to let him slip underneath them.
He immediately closed his arms around you, hugging you tightly and burying his face in the crook of your neck.
He had shown up at your doorstep one day, only wearing pants, hair a mess, cuts and dirt all over his skin, and starving.
He had somehow lived the attack of his brother, but lost his graze in the process.
After he had discovered hunger, sadness and fear, you came to the conclusion that he had a soul, memories still from his time back as an angel, but a true human now.
You had given him a room that you didn't needed, so he could sleep in there if he liked to, have a place to come back to.
One night, as you came late from work, you had found him, a crying mess on his floor, recalling the scene how he had died, and the pain of his brother's betrayal had even reached you.
Every few nights since then, he would stumble in your room, cheeks wet from tears or with hazy eyes; He would lie down next to you, curling himself against your form and cry, his body shaking with sobs.
Gabriel huffed like a dog, bringing you even closer to his freezing body, taking in the heat you were giving. Your chests were pressed together, and you patted his smooth hair, while he looked at you. His hands were placed flat on your shoulder blades, his elbows resting on your hips, your noses barely touching.
"It is okay, Gabriel. It is over." You whispered. A single tear rolled out of Gabriel's eyes, travelled down his cheek and vanished somewhere around his lips.
He parted them in an attempt to say something, but found his voice gone. He continued to look at you with his beautiful eyes, filled with sadness, unspoken questions, anger and helplessness.
You moved closer, leaning your forehead against his.
"Gabriel, it isn't your fault. It was... nobody's fault. Lucifer... he tried to do what he thought was the best... you should have seen his face after..." you trailed off, a knob in your tongue, Gabriel's tears now flooding freely. He closed his eyes as you pressed a kiss to his forehead, but sighed heavily as he nuzzled his nose in your shoulder, head laying on your stomach. You patted his back, whispering comforting words in a language Gabriel didn't knew.
You felt his little jolt, before he was finally drifting into slumber, lightly smiling to yourself.
Gabriel wasn't himself anymore, less energetic without his powers, less turned on by women and less smiling, or making jokes.
It had all been replaced with these moments, filled with heavy emotions and comforting by you, but you knew it would be over sooner or later, and then he would get along with it.
His arms, basically holding on to your for dear life, relaxed a bit, and his whole body lost it's tense, showing that he had slipped into a dreamless sleep.
You closed your eyes as well, still smiling.
"Happy dreams, Gabriel, my angel."
You whispered.
