Tahani Al-Jamil- Art (a)

The Good Place One Shot

Servers ducked and weaved around the guests as they admired the art that was plastered over the walls. You leant against the wall, an empty wine glass in your hand and the feeling of always being second to your siblings heavy in your heart and head.

"Not enjoying the exhibition?" Tahani looked around for something to protect her dress, settling on a few discarded brochures, throwing them onto the floor and sitting with you, taking great care to not spill the white wine that sat in her hand.

"It's okay I guess, it isn't abnormal for me to be surrounded by the pride of my siblings." She looked over at the single piece of art that you had contributed, shunned away in an unlit corner.

"Please." Tahani chuckled to herself before taking a large mouthful of her drink. "My parents practically bend over for Kamilah. I'm not even sure if they know my name."

"I hear that." You looked around at the various canvases and sculptures that lined the walls and filled the otherwise empty space, looking at all of the people praising the pieces that found their way their through the hands of your siblings, your far more talented siblings that got all the love from not just your parents, but society as well.

"So Kamilah' sister huh? Didn't you donate a load of money? That's way better than being her. What has she done that's so great?"

"Youngest person to graduate from Oxford, world class painter," Tahani raised her fingers to count. "Olympic gold medallist... the list just gets bigger from there really."

You put your semi-drunken arm around her shoulder, and she leant her head over and onto your chest.

"Wanna know why were better than they are? Because we do good things, so the universe is going to pay us back." You tried to comfort her but all she responded with was a half-ass smiled and the dismissal of your thoughts with a simple flick of her bangled wrist.

"The universe had better have a big treasury because it owes me a hell of a lot." She finished the wine in her glass and pushed herself up off the floor.

"Now if you don't mind, I have some grovelling to my parents to do, after all, I have provided nothing but years of disappointment and trouble for them." You raised your glass and watched her stride off into the herds of aristocracy and oligarchs, bankers and Hollywood stars.
