Megan O'Brien- Walter (c)

Scorpion One Shot

Hospitals were a horrible place to be, but to have to live there, knowing your final days were going to be spent in the clinical hell of the ward, that was a fate you hoped you'd never have. Even if you were so lucky to avoid it, not all were. Your sister-in-law and best friend Megan had spent the last couple of years living in a hospice to be able to have around the clock care for her MS but in the last month and a bit she had been forced to live in a hospital ward as she was deteriorating.

Even though she was said to only have weeks left to live, she was still in high spirits, always smiling and always trying to make sure those who visited her were happy. It was hard to be happy when you knew someone you loved was going to be gone so soon. Nevertheless, you visited her at least once a week, sometimes with your husband, sometimes on your own.

Walter believed he could cure her but no one else had that hope. You and Megan's husband Sylvester just wanted what Megan wanted, to be comfortable and go out on her own terms, not losing the precious time she had to more tests and medications.

Today you were sat by her bedside, showing her pictures of her brother from your uneventful weekend at the Scorpion garage.

"You braided his hair?" She laughed, pulling your phone closer.

On the screen was your husband Walter with his usually curly locks in tight braids. You weren't sure how many braids there were, but no strands were sticking out of them though.

"Yeah, I got bored and he said I could if it meant he could keep reading," you shrugged.

Megan laughed again, handing you back the phone.

"I remember trying to braid his hair when we were kids, God did he scream the house down," she smiled. "He was never a fan of people touching his hair."

"He still isn't. He only let me do it so that I'd stop pestering him and let him read."

She gave you a warm smile, moving herself slightly in her bed so that she could keep sitting up, rather than sliding back down under her covers.

"I'm so glad that you make him happy. He always struggled to get along with people, but even if he'd never admit it, he is the happiest I've ever seen him when he is with you," she smiled.

"He makes me happy too."

"Please take care of him when I go. He is going to beat himself up about it, but make sure he keeps his chin up," she whispered.

"Of course."
