Jenny Lee- Cake (c)
Call The Midwife One Shot
Whenever you couldn't help a pregnancy, you struggled to cope afterwards. You all knew that sometimes there wasn't anything that could be done, and God had plans even if that meant the loss of an infant. It pained you and you couldn't imagine what it would be like for the mother and father to face the loss of a child they hadn't been able to love and cherish from outside of the womb. Each nurse and midwife had their own ways of coping, knowing that inevitably there would be more loss coming no matter how hard you tried to stop such pain.
Your way of coping was baking. Jenny and you had been with a young mother attempting to deliver her first baby but with a breach birth it only added to complications that you couldn't have foreseen. She had fallen silent when you returned to Nonnatus House, excusing herself to shower and go to her room. You on the other hand headed to the kitchen and begun to make a Victoria sponge, glad that Sister Bernadette had been to market earlier in the day to get a fresh jar of raspberry jam.
It wasn't a complex recipe and you had been making it with your mother since you could walk so found no issue in perfecting it now. All the nurses enjoyed a good slice of cake once in a while and you knew that yourself and Jenny could do with a fair piece to heal the wounds of the day you had experienced.
Grabbing two sizeable slices, you placed them onto the small plates allowing you to carry them to Jenny's room. Before setting off to your friend's bedroom, you hide away the rest of the Victoria sponge into an old tin, putting it into the cupboard, knowing someone would find it no matter where you put it. Heading off to Jenny, you had your hands full with the two plates so used your foot to kick the door so that she knew you were there.
"Jenny, it's me," you called out. "Can you let me in if you're decent?"
After a couple of seconds, she opened the door, now in her nightgown, a still solemn expression upon her face.
"I thought after a rough day, some freshly baked cake could fair you well," you smiled weakly, having done your activity of healing and hoping that baked goods could assist matters.
"We aren't to eat in our rooms," she said softly.
"I won't tell if you don't," you offered, trying to get her to smile and succeeding this time even if it was weak.
"Come in before someone sees you," she smiled ushering you into her room so that you could share the cake.
