Neurosis

Balefire series
Neurosis (or Talia) is one of my favorite characters. She has such a sad backstory and such a cool power. If you haven't read the short story about her and Gren, I highly recommend it. It's... violent and bloody, just a forewarning.

An overview would be that her brother died in a light leaping accident, which drove her dad to alcohol. Her dad became abusive, verbally and physically. Talia manifests as an empath who can feel negative emotions without touching people. So, she lives everyday enduring her father's rage and her mother's fear and grief. When she comes home one day to find that her mother has given up and taken the easy way out, she turns on her father, manifesting as an Inflictor and cracking his sanity. She runs away and Gisela recruits her for the Neverseen.

*heaves long breath*

So, I love her character because she has such a unique ability. Since she can feel people's emotions, she has a never ending supply of emotions to inflict and the more she inflicts the more emotions she takes in which just fuels her inflicting even more. It's an infinite cycle and it's terrifying. She's the perfect tool to shatter a mind. 😈

She's also just a poor innocent girl that got taken advantage of and now Gisela uses fear to keep her in line. (Gisela gave her the scar under her eye.)

I know I gave her an abrupt redemption arc, but her character warranted it. She's just too good to stay evil. (Unlike Gren, who's a sick sadist.)

My favorite part is probably when she cracks her father's sanity. There's just so much raw emotion. Neurosis finally releases all of her bottled up emotions from the past year or two and realizes the true scope of her abilities. I love how she shifts from her rage and grief to utter horror at her own abilities.

My favorite part to write would have to be when she meets Valerie and uses her abilities on her to the point of almost breaking her mind. She's just so emotionally unstable because she's forced to bottle up her feelings to avoid hurting everyone around her.

I just love the concept of this character and I'm so glad I found a way to write her into my story.
