Judging

The details such as what, who, where and why are all open for interpretation, so you can write the best fanfiction possible! But there are a few key aspects that impact the assessment of your story. The following are some of the things, we look at:

- Catchiness: There's a compelling hook/conflict, the premise is clear in the opening section and it gets to the point in a timely manner!

- Characters: Characters have strong motivations in the core story which pushes the narrative forward. Whether we need to love them or love-hate them, we need to at least feel something for them!

- Engagement: Give us a narrative that grabs us by the socks and gets us excited to read more! Whether you take a unique approach or do a beloved cliché, we don't want to feel bored.

- Creativity: Use the opportunity to show off your great ideas and creative artistry by weaving ordinary words into something magical.

- Worldbuilding: The great thing about fanfiction is that the world is already partially built for you. This means you have plenty of opportunity to use it as your personal playground, Explore the known scenes or step onto undiscovered territory. Whichever you do, keep the writing specific, clear, and logical within the scope of your fandom.

- Readability: A key part of writing is the technical side, such as diction, spelling, and grammar. Are the words you're using correct and do they make sense? Do your paragraphs flow well or are there irrelevant details and clunky descriptions? Give us a smooth reading experience and help us immerse into your story!

- Clarity: The story we're reading is a fanfiction and therefore it's important that we can immediately identify it as one. If we're in doubt that it's fanfiction and/or what fandom it is based on, your story has missed the assignment! Use the core elements of the fandom by using the character names, the settings, and the terms we know. Use the reason behind why you like the fandom so much and appeal to the fandom's audience by using elements they can recognize easily.

- Knowledge: It's important to add your own touch to the story, but don't forget to stay true to the canon elements. That said, do also be mindful that the reader might not know your fandom as intently as you do. So try to write your story in a way where even a new fan can make sense of the story.

- Relevance: Additionally to knowledge about the fandom, do try and keep the categories above in mind. Knowing what category you want to be considered in might help your writing experience and increase your chances of being awarded.
