The Light Fury: A Mary Sue? (HTTYD)

Author's Note: Hey, fellow Furians! This chapter is going to be pretty long, so get some snacks and drinks and enjoy! This will also be a rant/discussion/theory chapter. Please understand that my ranting about this dragon isn't against anyone who loves the dragon or has their theories that I may not agree with. It's against the dragon itself, how Dreamworks designed her, and how it might affect the chemistry of the franchise that we've all come to love. So PLEASE don't take my rant personally or anything. I respect the opinions and stances of all HTTYD fans. I may not agree with some areas or topics or stances but I won't attack people just because they like something I don't. I hope you can be open-minded and listen to what I have to say about this.

Thank you for your time.

P.S. -- There's an update chapter after this article that explains the abilities of the Light Fury. I had forgotten to post it not long after I had watched more trailers and watched HelloFutureMe's video on it. So read it unless you already know and watched the movie.

P.P.S. -- Concerning this article about the Light Fury being a Mary Sue, keep in mind that this was written long before the movie came out into theaters on February 22, 2019. Also keep in mind that I haven't watched the movie yet, so my POV in this article concerning the Light Fury is solely based on what I've watched from trailers and from videos of fans' views on the Light Fury. It could be that I might end up just ignoring the unrealistic anatomy of the Light Fury or her existence in the story and just end up loving her. Who knows?

The Light Fury: A Mary Sue?

6/8/18

So, as I said earlier, I'm going to write a chapter on the Light Fury.

That's right. . .

A LIGHT Fury.

Don't confuse it with a Night Fury, or a type of Night Fury.

It's a LIGHT Fury! Completely different animal. Though maybe they're cousin species or something.

*Sighs* I guess I should be happy that it's not a white Night Fury and not a true Night Fury. But it's still so disappointing. *mumbles* I wanted more Night Furies. *sobs* :'(

Do you know why I'm a bit mad about this? Well, I'll tell you.

1) I've been waiting for almost NINE years for more NIGHT FURIES!!! Not for Dreamworks to give us . . . THIS! Now I wouldn't be ranting about this unless she was a white Night Fury. But no, she's a Light Fury, not even close. In fact, it's the complete opposite. I've been excited waiting for more Night Furies to come up and they're NOT COMING!!! WHY?! Is Dreamworks not telling us something?! Are the Night Furies REALLY EXTINCT and Toothless is really the LAST ONE!?!? If that's the case . . . then . . . I am writing an HTTYD fanfic where there's a whole SOCIETY of Night Furies and I'm going to SPAM. THEM. TO. VALHALLA. AND. BACK!!!!!

2) The Light Fury's anatomy is off. If this is a different species, I guess I can overlook it (not really, but I can try), but if it's supposed to be a Night Fury of some sort, then it's badly done.

Look at this:

Her features were intentionally made to look FEMININE. Like WHAT?!

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not having issues with her being a female. I'm having issues with the way Dreamworks made it so blatantly OBVIOUS that she's female. As if we, the audience, are complete idiots and can't tell the difference! While other dragon species don't have glaringly obvious differences between male and female. None. There's no sexual dimorphism. So then why are we giving it to the Night Furies?

I'm serious. In the ENTIRE franchise, you NEVER know who's male or female unless the characters tell you their gender (which makes me wonder how they do that, since, if they're anything like reptiles, it'd be almost impossible to find out). You never see point-blank obvious gender differences. EVER. So why do it with the Light Fury?

She looks like Disney designed her with all the sparkle, glimmer, smooth skin with hardly any scales, and lack of frills. And a rounded snout. Doesn't look aerodynamic. Why does she have to look so feminine? It looks like that if she were a woman, she'd have a big bust (pardon my French), wide hips, curvy figure, and irresistible eyes! That's Mary-Sue material, folks!

I personally hope that they're not going to turn her into a Mary Sue with dragon scales. Because from what I'm hearing so far, that's what it might turn into. :-/ Plus the anatomy they've given her is ugly and artificial in my opinion. Nothing like a Night Fury. That's why I'm peeved about her being "feminized", not necessarily because she's a female. And it's not just me. Hundreds, if most of the Fandom don't like her, whether it's because of her being a White Night Fury or because despite loving her, they dislike how they designed her. And many of these people are up-and-coming animators, biologists, etc.  They know what they're talking about.

Why does she have to be feminized? The audience is going to know who's who anyway, right? I mean, we know that Astrid and Ruffnut and Valka and Heather are females, even though they're not Disney's definition of what a female should be. Right? I would hope so. FYI, they're so beautiful because they're REALISTIC and NOTHING LIKE DISNEY!!!!

This is what she should look like REALISTICALLY:

THIS is what she should look like -- LIKE TOOTHLESS! Whether as a Light Fury or a white Night Fury (no not albinoism). Because, if other dragons don't have distinctions between genders, neither should this dragon. Period. Otherwise, you're turning her into a Mary Sue or going against your own patterns.

3) Her teleporting plasma blast looks unnatural. You don't see any other dragons have this power. Other dragons have natural abilities: Changewing with invisibility, Skrill and Night Fury with lightning, Thunderdrum with a sonic roar, etc. Nothing with supernatural abilities like teleporting! That's just OP. If HTTYD dragons were like those in Eragon, then I wouldn't be talking about this, but they're not. And it bugs me.

Now, that being said, it could just as easily be an illusion. So I'm not going to judge until I see the movie. But if she really DOES teleport, I'm going to have some issues. lol XD

4) That her appearance might be Dreamworks' subtle FYI that the Night Furies might totally be extinct. If they're having her here, and not any actual Night Furies, and since this is the last show of the franchise, I'm worried that this is them telling us that there ARE no more Night Furies. Which I can't take at all. My heart would break to a gazillion microscopic pieces!! :'(

. . . Unless, of course, the Night Furies live outside the Archipelago and live somewhere else. But then we'd need to ask ourselves why Toothless is here in the Archipelago?

5) She might be an OC, instead of a naturally-occurring character -- that Dreamworks might've created her just to cater to the audience. We see it a lot in HTTYD fanfics and not only in those, but in HTTYD/Frozen crossovers as well! However, I can't make that judgment until I've seen the movie. But I'm worried that she won't fit the theme at all -- especially since we've been waiting for Night Furies this whole time (or at least I have. I can't say for everyone).

I'm not the only person to think this. I'm sure many of you have this same worry. There are many others in the Fandom who are worried about this. Here are just one of the comments concerning the trailer and the Light Fury:

And that's just one of them. There are many more. I'd add more but I only get a 20-pic limit per story part.

6) I'm worried that those who've written fanfics and made lucky predictions that Toothless might meet a White Night Fury (or in this case a Light Fury) -- to the scoffing of many fans including myself -- will now become aggravating and a bunch of sock-stealing trolls and rub it in our faces.

I just hope that this Light Fury isn't going to be a source of conflict, debates, and trolling among the HTTYD fans. I'm worried that it might be worse than when they were doing it concerning the Shipping Wars.

Anyway, that's it I think. On to the theories!

<><><><><><><><><><>

The Camps of Opinion:

6/9/18

There are five -- three major and two minor -- camps of thought concerning the Light Fury:

1) Those who hate the Light Fury solely because it's not a Night Fury or because it's an OC dragon that they've been seeing since HTTYD first came out in fanfictions and fan art.
          - There's a minor camp in this major camp where they hate the Light Fury solely because they don't want Toothless to have a love interest or want him permanently alone.

2) The second major camp is composed of those who love the Light Fury and are so excited that the muse of their imaginative creation has germinated into fruition with Dreamworks creating her and will possibly now justifiably spam the fanart and fanfics with white Furies now that it's officially canon. They are so enamored, entranced, star-struck with the Light Fury that it's a little weird if nothing.
          - This minor camp within this camp are composed of pro-Light Fury fans who love the Light Fury but disagree with how she looks and appears, and side with the anti-Light Fury side on this count concerning the anatomy design, as many of these people are biologists, animators, designers, artists, etc -- or are training to become one.

There's an article written by an anti-Light Fury fan who dislikes her because of her appearance, claiming that it's against Dreamworks normal patterns and also that it goes against nature itself, as there are no examples of such differences. Keep in mind that I'm only paraphrasing.

Here's the link to her article: WARNING: She cusses like a sailor so read at your own peril!!

http://irrevocably-delicious.tumblr.com/post/174466599863/hey-whats-up-that-httyd-3-poster-got-me-fucked

3) The third major camp is the neutral camp -- the fence-sitters -- who don't know what to think about the Light Fury and wish to reserve their judgment until they watch the movie and see for themselves.

4) Here's a minor camp that consists of fans who are unlike the others. They are scattered all of the camps -- though they're mostly concentrated in the Neutral and pro-Light Fury camps, albeit they're also in the anti-camp too.

These fans don't want the Light Fury to be Toothless's love interest. They want her to be Toothless's daughter figure or a long-lost sibling that he finds. Rather than a cliche love interest. Then Toothless can find himself another Fury and then mate with her. I'm actually in this camp, to be honest. Hence is where my theory will come from.

There might be more camps, but I'm not aware of them. Let me know if I've forgotten a side. ;-)

<><><><><><><><><><>

The Theories:

There are many absurd theories about this Light Fury. Here's some of them.

1) That she's an albino Night Fury (which wouldn't work because albinos have red eyes and sickly, diseased, weak creatures. Most animals with this rarely survive juvenile-hood. She never would've made it in the wild.

She has blue eyes and white scales (though I'm not finding any), which makes her leucistic, not albinic.

2) That it's a sexual dimorphism thing. Something that's particular to only the females. Well, for one thing, there's no proof yet that that's true. Since she's the only one, we have nothing else to compare it to. Then there's the problem that I mentioned earlier where we see literally NO examples of obvious gender differences between male and female dragons of any dragon species. You literally need the characters to spell it out for you because you'd never be able to tell them apart.

And then again, how do we know that what they say is correct? For all we know, all of the Gang's dragons (excluding Stormfly and Meatlug because they already know they are female because they laid eggs) could be female. Heck, Toothless could've been female, and Hiccup could've called Toothless a "he/him" this whole time and be wrong. After all, Fishlegs mistook Meatlug to be a male dragon in Gift of the Night Fury -- until he saw the eggs. It could be that we've been wrongly mislabeling them the wrong gender this WHOLE TIME -- characters included!

. . . Now that I think about it, that'd be HILARIOUS!!! I would've LOVED to see their reactions if that's the case. lol XD

But I'm serious, you'd never be able to tell. Again, there's no obvious gender differences in dragons. At least in the HTTYD universe. It is in the other dragon-centered fandoms like Eragon, Reign of Fire, and others.

Okay, I'll stop talking about this now. On to the next one!

3) That her color hides her in clouds or snowy conditions. I guess that could happen. But if she's supposed to be a white Night Fury (though, honestly, after watching the trailer, I'm seriously doubting that that's the case), her coloring would get her spotted immediately to predators, prey, and Dragon Hunters.

I can see maybe using it as camouflage in the snow. But if she's a Light Fury (NOT a Snow or Ice Fury), then I doubt it could be that. UGH!!! WHY MUST WE WAIT A WHOLE YEAR TO WATCH THE MOVIE?!!?! X(

What do you guys think? Why is she white? Why does she have fewer frills and lack of scales? Why is she so sparkly?!

Here's my theory about why she's white. It's inspired by a couple of fanfics (whose titles I've long since forgotten. My apologies to the authors). I'll also add some comments from those who also believe in this theory -- in a sense.

<><><><><><><><><><>

My Theory:

My theory is that she's white because she's a juvenile Night Fury. Yes, yes, Astrid calls her a "Light Fury" but forgive her ignorance. We all know that it's a Night Fury deep inside. lol XD

Anyway, I believe that she's a juvenile Night Fury who hasn't come of age yet where she sheds the white scales in favor of the black ones that her kind is so famous for.

Why do I think this?

Well, this theory was used in a few fanfics that I've read where as hatchlings/fledglings come of age, they begin to shed their white scales in favor of their black ones (if I remember correctly. If I'm wrong, then this just might be my own theory. Keep in mind that I haven't read these fanfics in years and don't remember the titles so I can't go back and check). Anyway, in their stories, they have the young'uns be white, the juveniles both black and white scales as they start shedding, adults as black, and the Elders as gray, I think. To show aging. I think it's a quite marvelous idea that they've concocted, so I'm using it for my theory.

This one might be from the anti-love interest camp that I'm in. I'm not sure. But I totally agree and support this. Even if they're wrong.

It makes sense. Because Valka says to Hiccup about Toothless:

Hiccup's 20 when Valka says this, meaning that Toothless is also 20. Which, in turn, means that Toothless will be whatever age that Hiccup is in the upcoming third movie -- somewhere around 22-25. In HTTYD 2, he has probably 20 frills to signify his age. Or whatever. I really hope we get to know more about Night Furies in HTTYD 3 and in the new and upcoming Dragons: Rescue Riders series.

Meanwhile, the Light Fury -- let's just call her Aurora for now -- has what seems to be only 4 frills, as is shown in this picture.

So maybe she's 4 years old, at most? Unless of course, being a Light Fury, frills might not determine her age like Night Furies?

How old do you think she is?

I guess I can't really say for sure until I watch HTTYD 3, and maybe have Valka tell us. Though I doubt she's seen this one. Else she'd have told Hiccup that. What do you think?

Before you get all grossed out about the age differences, keep in mind that these are DRAGONS, not humans, and thus they mature a lot quicker than we do. Another thing, many of us are LOTR fans, and many OTPs have big age gaps. And Stoick and Valka? They're TEN YEARS APART!!!!

Though, again, Light Furies may have a different way to determine age, unlike Night Furies, so she may be way older than we think. *Eyes widen and gasps* It could be a dragon incarnation of Galadriel or Arwen! O_O :-D

Or a reincarnation of Queen Elsa as a dragon. Who knows? :-/

Aaaaanyway, back to my theory. Sorry, I went into a dragon trail there. lol XD

Now . . . where was I? *thinks for a long moment, then brightens* Oh! Yes! Scales!

Now, you're probably wondering why in the world would Night Fury scales be white during the hatchling/ fledgling years? Well . . . remember the headcanon that Night Furies eggs get struck by lightning on the tops of mountains? Well, if that's true, then most mountains -- especially those in the North -- has snow on it on the peaks. So it could be that Night Fury hatchlings have white scales to camouflage them into the snow to hide them from enemies and predators, until they're old enough to be able to shed their white scales for their famous black ones.

Now you're probably wondering why the hatchlings would be raised in the mountains? Well, according to a video made by Hello Future Me on Youtube, Whispering Deaths and Night Furies might have been natural enemies. And since both dragon species live on the ground in caves, then I'm sure that there are constant encounters between the two species. So it could be that Night Furies take their eggs to the mountain peaks, not only for the lightning to be able to hit the eggs for them to hatch, but also to keep them safe from the Whispering Deaths and to prevent them from getting destroyed or eaten. Then as they grow older and bigger, eventually they'll shed their white scales for their black ones so that they can blend in with the night and in the darkness of the caves.

So this is my theory on why she's white, and that she MIGHT be a juvenile. Though I may be wrong. In fact, I'm probably wrong.

What do you guys think? Is my theory plausible even though she's probably even just a Light Fury?  Do you think Night Furies end up changing their scale colors as they age as many reptiles do? Or do you think that they have black scales from birth to death (which might be more accurate since they're called NIGHT Furies)?

<><><><><><><><><><>

The Discovery:

*Next day* 6/10/18

*Comes into the room with a downcast face* Well . . . I just found out from Hello Future Me -- with the obvious proof in the form of DeBlois's own words on Reddit -- that "Light Furies are their own species, possibly close cousins to the Night Fury (as I already theorized, so at least I was right on that), and that, unlike Toothless, isn't the last of her kind."

Don't believe me? I have the proof. Here it is. On the bottom part.

So she is what she is: a Light Fury. Not a white Night Fury that's given that name. *long, pained, disappointed sigh* Oh well, at least she's a different species. It might explain why she's so different from Toothless. I guess we'll have to see when we watch the movie.

So my entire theory just got shot out of the water! *slumps, crestfallen* And she's most definitely going to be his love interest, instead of the daughter figure or sibling that we wanted her to be.

BUT! It might be right for the Night Furies -- if there are any left. What do you think? Or do you think that Night Furies are born obsidian and die obsidian?

<><><><><><><><><><>

To The "Pro-Toothless-The-Only-Night-Fury" Group:

Also, to the group of people who don't want Night Furies or that Light Fury because they want Toothless to be forever alone of his species or group because that's the only thing that makes him special and set apart.

Um . . . excuse me? Toothless is plenty unique as a Night Fury that would TOTALLY stand him out from the Fury crowd if there's ever a time for Night Furies to come.

For example, he's the only Night Fury to have a prosthetic tail-fin, he's the only Night Fury to be the Alpha of various dragon species other than other Night Furies, he's the only Night Fury -- to our knowledge -- to have a Rider . . .

Oh, and his personality is very much similar to Hiccup's, and is still his own dragon, as well. Look at this . . .

And this.

And this.

And this.

And this.

And my absolute favorites -- surely no Night Fury other than Toothless has EVER done THESE:

*Tries to keep a straight face, but fails* BAHAHAHA! What IS this?! Toothless, what in the stars are you doing? HAHAHA! This gets me EVERY time. I laugh every time I see this and I try hard not to laugh to loud as to not earn the unwanted attentions of my family as they think that I've lost my marbles! lol XD

And here's the iconic and famous Toothless scowl. Don't get on the wrong end of this look. XD

And lastly, there's the famous and adorable and only-Toothless smile that only Toothless can make. ^_^

I'm sorry, people, but Toothless is his OWN dragon. He has made his OWN identity, and it is UNIQUE. He doesn't need to be the only Night Fury to be special. He already has so many things that distinguish him from the flock, and make him distinctive from other Night Furies. Even if there were other Night Furies, that would never take away Toothless's specialness, because of his personality, his disability, and his being Alpha of multiple species of dragons. Night Furies, being the isolationists they are, would only be Alphas of their own flocks consisting only of other Night Furies. So that alone would make him different besides the mere fact of him being Alpha period.

So please, my friends, don't make Toothless be Night Fury-less because you just want him to stay special by being the only one. That's not fair to him, to Hiccup, or to the HTTYD fandom who've been waiting for Night Furies (or, at least I have) since after HTTYD 1's release.

Conclusion:

So anyway, I hope you've enjoyed this epoch of an article concerning my rants about the Light Fury. I hope you've enjoyed it. I would appreciate any feedback from you concerning this.

Again, keep in mind that I've never watched the movie. So a good chunk of this article would be debunked by the time the movie came out.

Thank you for reading this. I love you guys. Enjoy the next chapter!
