Reverse Comfort

As the two of you walked towards your neighborhood, Momo held her head down and she only mumbled responses as you attempted to chat with her. There was something bothering her, and you didn't want her to go through whatever she was internally debating about.

"Momo, are you alright?" You asked, a chill running down your spine from the autumn weather.

She looked up and gave a smile, giving a carefree expression. "Yeah, just a little tired." She answered.

You stopped walking and shoved your hands into your pockets, looking at her eyes.

She was lying.

"You're lying, Momo. And I know you are. If you were genuinely tired, you would be groggy and be chugging that melon soda. And that smile you gave me was also fake. There are no creases around your eyes, even though there are on your cheeks. Now, what's wrong?" You challenged, a concerned tone and expression clear.

She sighed and dropped the smile, her onyx eyes laced with frustration or slight sadness, maybe both. "Why are you friends with me?" She asked suddenly, stopping to face you with a questioning look. You raised an eyebrow and set your dominate hand on her shoulder, giving her a serious look.

"Because I can and I want to." You answered truthfully. She averted her gaze and played with the end of her green skirt. You sighed and opened your bag, opening the photos app on your phone and showing her the picture that the two of you took at the cafe.

"Momo, look at the phone." You instructed. She hesitantly turned her head and looked at the phone, a phantom of understanding in her eyes. "Now, I agreed to take this picture because you're special to me. I don't trust anyone, Momo, and I hope you understand that you deserve to have a good life, whether I'm included or not. That is why I'm friends with you."

Her eyes widened as she processed what you had said. Her onyx eyes filled with tears and she took your hand off of her shoulder, gripping it tightly. You sighed and stepped forward, wrapping your arms around her torso and running your fingers gently up and down her back. As her tears stained your shoulder, your heart ached as she held back the sobs that were spilling.

Gently rocking her back and forth, you whispered reassuring words and made jokes, making her softly chuckle. As you were doing this, you couldn't help but wonder why she felt this way. Was she questioning your motives?

Feeling the evening wind go up and down your skin, you naturally held Momo tighter to preserve warmth. She pulled away and lifted her sleeve, activating her quirk to make a large scarf. Then, she put the scarf gently around the both of your necks, making you smile. "That's a pretty cool quirk! You'll make an amazing hero in the future!" You informed. Her eyes widened once more as the two of you continued walking, and as she looked down with pink tinting her cheeks.

You smirked to yourself and grabbed her hand subconciously, which resulted in making you blush as well. With your breath coming out irregularly, your heart beating out of your chest, and your thoughts going blank, you once again averted your eyes.

But as the two of you continued walking, a question kept flooding into your thoughts.

Why was she insecure about your friendship?

Sure, you were a little closed off and didn't tell everything about yourself, but you did show care for her and your other friends. Plus, you did trust her enough to cry in front of her. Turning your head to ask her, you met her eyes that were once again filled to the brim with tears, but a wide  and genuine smile laced her lips.

Your eyes widened and your grip on her hand tightened as you gently led her to a nearby bench. Sitting her down, you pulled a lukewarm canned coffee out of your bag, handing it to her as you kneeled in front of her.

"What's wrong? Did I do something wrong?" You questioned, your eyes glimmering with confusion and slight pain.

She shook her head and wiped her tears, opening the canned coffee and taking a sip.

"Nothing, it's just....." She mumbled, averting her onyx eyes as she set down the canned coffee onto the pavement.

You sighed and played with your hair, looking at her with a serious look in your eyes. "No you're not, because if you were you wouldn't be crying."

She sighed and gave you a genuine smile as she wrapped her arms around your waist, making you hold yourself off of the ground slightly.

"I'm lucky to have you as a friend, and I hope we can continue being friends for the rest of our lives. You make me feel something, but I don't know what it is. I am happy to be considered your friend." She said into your shoulder.

You smiled and hugged her back, clutching onto her for dear life. "And I would say the same for you. Thank you for coming into my life."

Softly pulling away, you heard your phone chime, making you reach into your bag as you maintained eye contact with Momo.

As she once again averted her eyes, you read the text that your Mom sent.

Mom at 7:39 pm: I'm going to need you to get a dress ASAP. There is going to be a dinner at the house to celebrate a new contract that your father was able to sign. You're free to invite anyone, and there is no limit to how many you can invite. The more the merrier!

You rolled your eyes and typed your response.

You at 7:39 pm: Okay. I'll be sure to invite around 20 people. Any color you want for the dress?

Mom at 7:40 pm: White.

You rolled your eyes and looked at Momo, who was reading over your shoulder. With a small smile, you offered a suggestion.

"Since there is no way in Hell that I'm getting out of this, how about we go shopping together tommorow? In case you haven't noticed, I like your fashion sense." You suggested.

She gave a small smile and nodded, walking with you back to your home.
