Beside Her

Somehow, you had fallen asleep in the fashionable yet slightly uncomfortable pantsuit, and it seemed the raven haired female had done the same. The moonlight shone in from the large window, but you immediately turned your attention to your phone, which rested on your nightstand. Unfortunately, it seemed to be low battery, but you could make do.

Turning it on, you had underestimated the brightness. This resulted in you dropping the phone onto your face. A groan escaped your lips as you set it next to you. The cold air hit your skin, and you shivered. As you were going to grab a blanket, you heard a giggle coming from the other side of the pillow wall.

"What's so funny?" You asked, getting on your knees and resting your arms on the top of the pillows, looking to see Momo holding in more laughs.

"Nothing." She replied.

You smiled and shook your head, a chuckle escaping your lips. And her onyx eyes only held amusement yet slight concern.

"And that was a lie."

Momo sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. Sitting up and doing the same as you had done. Her raven hair was a slight mess and her groggy expression made it all the better weirdly.

"Fine, I was laughing at the fact you dropped your phone onto your face." She admitted, raising her hands above her head as she was being arrested for something you would've done as well.

"I knew it! You like to see me suffer!" You exclaimed, teasingly, of course.

She winked and smiled, only realizing the fact her hair was a mess.

"I'm surprised you didn't take a picture of my messy hair. Imagine the class seeing that." She said, ready to grab your phone in case you tried to do so.

"I would never." You replied, diving for your phone at once, but immediately breaking into a fit of laughter, which Momo soon joined. This lasted a few minutes before you collapsed back onto your side and running your fingers through your hair.

"You're ridiculous, you know that?" She asked, and you chuckled in response.

"I know, but that's why you're friends with me."

A tense and heavy silence filled the air, and you immediately got concerned, "Right?"

"Uh...yeah!" Momo replied, with soon followed with an awkward chuckle escaping her lips.

"You didn't seem to confident in that."

"Don't worry about it!"

You sat up and once again got on your knees, leaning against the wall of pillows. "That's only going to make me worry even more, Momo. Did I say something?"

She averted her gaze and bit her lip before sighing, running her own fingers through her hair. Her tone was quiet, as she knew it was around midnight, even though the party could still be heard.

"I....don't know what it is, but there is something between us. Don't you feel it too?" She asked.

You sucked in your bottom lip, and pondered it for around four seconds.

"Yeah..."

Momo heaved a heavy sigh and averted her gazze even more, waving her hands in front of her face. "Sorry, that was a stupid statement to make."

"No it wasn't, it just stunned me." You responded.

A look of relief crossed Momo's features, but a look of curiosity shined.

"Well, what do we do now?"

"I'm not sure. Haven't been in this situation."

The two of you stayed silent for a few minutes, pondering your own thoughts. How come you haven't noticed it? Sure, you imagined being in a romantic relationship with her only once, but did she really feel that way? If she didn't, then it would be awkward? No, she was smarter than that. But it came out of nowhere.

"Do you feel that way? That we belong together as a couple?" You asked, snapping Momo out of her thoughts.

She hesitated before responding, rubbing the back of her neck as a calming mechanism, "I wouldn't be opposed to it, but I don't want to make you uncomfortable."

"Interesting."

Another awkward and tense silence fell, and it didn't help the music that was playing from the downstairs party was awful. Seriously, it sounded like a cat was screaming from your perspective. But that was besides the point, as the door to your bedroom gradually opened to reveal Momo's mother, who had a bowl of dried fruit in her hand.

"Are you girls alright?" She asked, cautiously setting the bowl of fruit onto your nightstand.

"Yeah." Momo replied with a small smile, making her own mom smile in response.

"Splendid!" She cried, dramatically collapsing onto the couch. "Your father's associates sure are annoying!"

The three of you chuckled and you leaned back, but still avoided eye contact with Momo. The air was tense, but not enough to make any of you uncomfortable. Heaving a heavy sigh of relief, you turned to Momo, who was also averting her eyes, and her mother seemed to notice.

"Girls, is there something wrong? You two usually are always laughing and chatting." She called out, grabbing you and Momo's attention. "If there is anything I can do, please tell me."

Rubbing the back of your neck, you gave Momo a hesitant look before replying: "No, but thanks for the concern. We just..."

"Just what?"

"Don't worry about it. We should head home, don't you think?" Momo chimed in, and her mother hesitantly nodded in agreement.

Both of them stood up, and before they were about to leave, Momo gave you a small smile and wave.
