The Ending We Never Got

Okay, so for those of you who watched or even played Detroit: Become Human, I have to say the game is a lovely story-teller. You have consequences for actions, your characters build character depending on your choices, and there's a whole bunch of easter eggs and hidden endings that you get to find. I was introduced to it when I watched CoryxKenshin play it, but I didn't watch it at first since I have issues with horror games and I was afraid that's what it was. Or some kind of shooter game. But it was fun and I'm glad I saw him play through. However, there's one...teeny tiny...itty bitty...teensy weensy...

Okay, An, stop trying to look old.......

I have a teeny tiny problem with the BOAT RIDE ENDING for Alice and Kara and Luther. Now, Alice and Kara can survive all the way to the end as long as you pick the right options. They can survive the boat ride the two of them, the camps the two of them, and the border the two of them. (Provided Markus has a peaceful protest).

Luther on the other hand.....

He can survive at the border.

He can survive the camps.

BUT HE DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE ON THE BOAT RIDE!!!!! And I absolutely love Luther and I find that extremely unfair. So...I'm going to write the ending we never got for all three characters on the boat ride.

CUE THE STORY!

"Luther! Switch with me!" Kara commanded. She grabbed hold of Alice's shoulders and dived under their guardian as he took their side of the raft. Kara figured it was deeper for him to hide in since he was bigger than her and Alice combined. As soon as the three landed in their respective spots, all Kara heard was loud shots from the other boat ringing loud over head. They continued to ring out in succession, echoing in Kara's ears, until they at last settled. Kara could feel her entire body shaking in panic since she didn't know the entirety of the damage, and she was breathing a little hard from the adrenaline rush. She wouldn't know the full damage for a moment and every second crept the horrifying possibility that Alice might be hurt, or scared. When she couldn't take it any longer, she finally sat up in the boat, the chilling air immediately came back around to cut her. She couldn't tell how cold it was, but she knew that staying her bio-components were not adapted to this kind of temperature. She did a quick self-check before turning back to Alice. She was alright. A bullet had just barely grazed her shoulder, but it had done no serious damage.

"Are you okay?" she asked Alice, looking her over. She checked her face, her arms, her stomach...just in case there was any damage. She even surveyed her with her scanner to be double sure.

"I'm okay," Alice promised, giving her a little hug.

Kara breathed a huge sigh of relief and squeezed her. Everything was going to turn out just fine. all they had to do was just row to the other-

Wait a minute! Luther!!!!

Kara quickly turned back around to the other side of the boat, seeing Luther groaning and struggling to sit up. His hands were covered in blue blood and Kara felt a chilling fear go through her as her and Alice quickly darted over to survey the damage.

"Luther!" she exclaimed, looking him over for damaged bio-components.

"Are you okay?" Alice pleaded. "You'll be okay, right?"

Luther managed to sit up and give them a reassured smile. "Don't worry about me," he said. "They just got my shoulder."

Kara scooted over to him and gently held his back. "Let me look," she said. Luther complied and a quick scan told Kara that the bullet had hit a main bio-component on the left shoulder. The damage wouldn't have been too bad, but since Canada had no androids, they wouldn't have any spare parts to replenish any blue blood he would lose. Even if they managed to seal the wound with hot metal (as Lucy had told her while they were waiting at Jericho), he wouldn't have enough to function on by the time they crossed and found Rose.

Kara paused for a second, her face contorted into a look of thoughtful concern. Alice didn't seem to notice however as she was delighted Luther wasn't dead. She gave him a delighted hug while Luther looked over and saw the look on Kara's face. He knew exactly what that meant.

"It'll be okay, Kara," he promised her, snapping her out of her thoughts. He gave her a wide smile. A brave one, Kara thought it, considering the circumstances. "We need to worry about getting you and Alice to the border. Then everything will be okay."

Not without you, Kara thought, but before she could say anything, she realized they had another problem. "The boat's leaking!" she exclaimed in terror.

The android family looked around their raft and soon rested their eyes on the spot where Kara and Alice had been hiding. Right at the end were several bullet holes. Most of them were towards the end of the raft where the storage was, but one or two had hit where Kara and Alice were. Kara assumed those had been the bullets that had grazed her when they had hid from the river patrol. She stood there for a second as the boat slowly began to fill with icy water and pondered over what to do.

"We have to keep rowing," Luther told her.

"We're too heavy," Kara said as she calculated how fast the water was coming in. "We'll sink if we just row on."

"I could help push. If you and Alice rowed and I pushed-"

"No. The water's freezing and you've lost too much blue blood to be in this kind of water."

Kara looked around before setting her eyes on the motor. "We'll have to drop some stuff," she announced. She then proceeded to, with a little effort and some slight help from Luther, push the motor off of the raft. They then tossed over the heavy case under the bench (just some spare parts for the motor) and continued to survey the boat. However, there wasn't anything else they could do to lighten the load.

"We're still too heavy," Luther observed. "If I get out and push, it'll make it easier to get to the other side."

[The player now has two options:

X--Accept Offer

O--Refuse

--->Refusing the offer will save Luther]

"No, Luther," Kara told him. "You've done so much for us already. I'm not going to let you freeze."

"We'll drown."

"I'll think of something."

She stood there for a moment, pondering the situation. She glanced over at the border. It was just a few minutes away. If they could just hold on....

"I'll push," she finally said.

Luther was absolutely surprised by this statement, but said nothing aside from, "You'll freeze!"

"If you and Alice stand in the center and row, it can help keep the boat balanced long enough to get to the other side," Kara continued. "Hopefully it'll be enough time to get us all across."

"But what if it doesn't?"

"That's a risk I'm willing to take."

Kara then made her way to the back of the boat as Alice and Luther, moving a bit slowly due to leaking blue blood, made their way to the center and slowly began to row the boat forward. Kara jumped into the water and felt a shock go through her body. Her bio-components were starting to freeze from the icy water, but she pressed herself on and began to push the boat to the border. It was a bit heavy and her parts were shutting down faster than she was expecting, but freedom was so close that she could almost taste it. She thought about Alice and the life she deserved. She thought about how quiet she was at Todd's house and nights they slept outside in the pouring rain. She thought about Alice shivering in the snow, being trapped by Zlatko and being saved by Luther and the androids being kept prisoner in the basement in that horrible old house. She remembered Alice's hope of being a family, like the one in the poster at pilot island and how happy she was on the Merry-Go-Round with the Jerrys. She thought about the times they spent together trying to survive on their own, the promise she had made to give Alice the happy life she deserved, and the talks they had about life across the border. Kara felt a smile forming as she imagined Alice going to school, coming home with happy smiles, making friends who were just like her and who would play with her. She imagined making dinner, singing songs, perhaps even going on hikes or on vacation to an amusement park like Pirate Cove. She imagined seeing Alice enjoying life as she deserved to. After everything she had gone through, that's what she truly deserved.

A minute went by. Then two. Finally, the android family reached the Canadian border and parked the boat on the snow bank. Luther scooped Alice up with his good arm and gave her an excited smile. "See, Alice?!" he exclaimed, swooping her down onto the snow. "We made it!"

Alice smiled too and she quickly hugged him. "We're here!" she cried. "We're really here! Were going to be okay! Right, Kara?"

No answer.

"Kara?" Alice repeated again, a little more quietly. She looked around the boat to see her mom, but couldn't see her anywhere.

"Kara!" Luther yelled, rushing over to the back of the boat. Pulling it closer to shore, he saw Kara, still clinging onto the back, completely unresponsive. Her eyes were tightly shut, her body was partially floating, and it seemed like she had just shut down. Luther quickly ripped her free from the raft, muttering many no's under his breath. He sat in the snow by Alice and cradled Kara in his arms, desperately hoping to revive her in some way. Alice collapsed next to him and shook Kara by the shoulders in an attempt to wake her up.

"Kara!" Alice screamed. "Kara, wake up! Wake up, Kara, please!"

No response.

Luther kept shaking his head, visibly upset now. "I shouldn't have let her," he said quietly, holding back tears. "I should have just done it."

Alice was now starting to cry and she hugged Kara tightly, continuing to beg for her to wake up. "You have to come with us!" she pleaded. "You promised, remember? We're going to be free! You can't leave us now!"  When Kara still didn't respond, Alice buried her face in Kara's coat and started sobbing. Luther just held onto her, glancing back across the river where the patrolman was still guarding the border. If only he hadn't insisted on taking the long way around. Then maybe they would have caught the bus and they wouldn't have had to deal with all this. This was his fault, and nothing would convince him otherwise.

As he sat there pondering over what could have been, he felt some stirring from his arms and looked down to see Kara finally open her eyes. Slowly, but she was definitely functional at the moment.

"Did...we make it?" she asked weakly looking at the two.

"Mom! You're okay!" Alice cried, giving her a hug so tight that it would have suffocated Kara had she been human.

Kara laughed lightly. "Of course I'm okay," she assured her. "I'm not leaving you that easily."

Luther scooped the both of them into a hug and the three sat there before being interrupted with the sudden brightness of car lights. Looking over, Luther exclaimed, "It's Rose!"

He went to stand up, intending to pick up both Kara and Alice, but stumbled back into the snow. He could feel himself leaking. At this point it was only a matter of time.

"Luther? Are you okay?" Alice asked worriedly. "You don't look good."

Wanting to hold off on telling Alice the bad news as long as possible, Kara said, "Go get Rose and tell her we need a little help getting to our feet. My bio-components are still thawing out so I can't get him up."

Alice did as she was told and told Rose, assisted by Adam and a few other androids who just managed to get across, that Luther looked really bad and Kara was cold. Kara watched Adam and some of the androids go around to the back of the car before seeing Rose walk up to them.

"Thank goodness you're okay!" she told them with a sigh of relief. "We heard gunshots just as we got to the border. Most of the others didn't make it, but we're glad you got across."

"We had a few close calls," Kara admitted.

"And now you're going to have a few more," Rose said. "Alice said Luther got hit in the shoulder. Canada doesn't make spare parts for androids, what with the android-law being here, so we figured it would be best to give everyone an emergency kit before getting settled. Some of the others didn't make it to the river at all, so we have a few extras in the back of the car you can use." Rose then walked over and helped Luther up before getting Kara to her feet. "We'll just get you all fixed up and then we'll head right over to my brother's house. Okay?"

Kara smiled in relief. "That sounds wonderful, Rose," she agreed. The two then headed towards the back of Rose's car to get Luther the blue blood and bio-components he needed to not shut down in the snow while Kara warmed up inside of the car. Luther and Alice then joined her in the back seat, and as Rose drove away with her son and several other androids who had miraculously made it, the family of three fell asleep in one another's arms, relieved and happy to be together. And most importantly: free.

[Status Update for Kara:

ALICE---> Family...path unlocked...Mom

LUTHER---> Family...path unlocked...Soulmate

And that is my ideal perfect ending to that boat ride scene. I hope you liked it.
