Renegades- Chapter One
-
As Ari walks up the steps to the roof where she knows Touya is waiting, she quickly wipes her tears on her sleeve. Her hands are bandaged and her knees are patched up from the earlier training that happened that day. Four girls died and they treated it like it was... normal... Ari didn't want that to be normal. She knew one of those girls. One of those girls was so nice to her, a girl about a year or two older than her. Saki was kind.. she was thoughtful, she didn't deserve to die. She didn't meet to their expectations , so they forced her to work.. and work.. and train.. and work.. until she collapsed.
Ari shivered, hugging herself with her hands, no.. she wouldn't go up the roof like this. Again, she brushed away the tears and forced a smile. She looked at herself through the foggy window and forced that smile until it looked genuine.
Touya didn't need that. He had his own things to worry about.
'Stop being so dramatic.'
She recalled Diane's earlier words and she sighed, rolling her shoulders back, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath before opening them and letting a soft smile that was barely noticeable grace her face.
Without another depressing, dramatic, thought, Ari continued her trek up the flight of stairs and opened the door to the roof, humming at the cold air that her face was met with.
She closed the door behind her, grinning as she saw Touya, he was already looking at her, his head tilted as he patted the spot next to him and she scampered over and sat.
His voice made her want to break all over again.
"How was your day, Little Ari?" He asked and she puffed out her cheeks and nudged him playfully.
"Shut up, I'm not little. I've told you a thousand times . It was.... same as always." She hummed, looking at his fingers as they laced around hers and squeezed slightly, warming them up against the cold air. She paused, "How was yours?"
He smirked. "Sure you aren't. Eh, it was pretty shitty but now that I'm here talking to you it makes it all the more better." She laughed and Touya's eyes softened. He hoped she never changed. That the commission never corrupted her as they had corrupted Keigo. He hoped they'd never ruin her like him, but it hurt to watch the light fade from her bright green eyes each time he saw her.
He knew..that if she stayed here, that light would eventually dwindle to nothing, and he would lose another friend. Keigo didn't bother knocking anymore, sure Touya ignored him purposefully when he had but.. Now Keigo was Hawks. A cocky little shit who's attitude reflected his supervisors. He looked to Ari with a calm expression, he couldn't help the words that trickled from his mouth, he wanted to take them back immediately. "What if we...didn't..have to do this anymore?"
Ari turned to him, tilting her head as she wiped a tear from her face, hoping he wouldn't notice. He did. He could tell she was hurting. "What..do you mean?" She sniffled.
"What if we left..if we could leave..would you..?" His heart fluttered in his chest and there was a knot in the back of his throat, once again..he wanted those words to come back.
"I.." A soft and shaky smile soon found its way on her face. "I..Yeah, I think if I could take it all back..I would.."
"What if I told you we could get out?" Touya pressed further.
One question.
Two answers.
One that changed the course of the future for Japan, brought the country to its knees. Another that caused a split in a friendship and ruined a boy.
Yes, no, the answers were simple, but both had their own set of consequences.
"How..?"
Weeks passed, the two meeting on the roof every night, whispering their dreams of the future.
On the fifth week, two families buried empty caskets. A boy cried out for his sister, another recalled better times, he and his brother playing in the family gardens. A mother weeped for her daughter, another was forced to grieve silently, their husband's hands placed on each of their shoulders. One firm, one soft.
-
Rising from their own ashes, came Cassiopeia, stars in her own right , and a boy with more burns and staples covering his body than fresh skin. They called him Dabi. They weren't heroes. They weren't villains. They were something in between. A grey area, one between good and bad. A bunch of runaways that fled a life they'd found themselves trapped in. They were vigilantes, using their quirks for good but breaking the law while doing it. In the eyes of the heroes they sometimes fought alongside, they were no better than the people they helped bring in.
Ari sat crouched on the rooftop, mask covering every inch of her face but her eyes and mouth.Touya didn't need a mask to hide his identity, his hair was as black as the ash that his quirk created, stitches lining underneath his eyes and arms. It had hurt her, seeing him like that, for the first time, and it still did. Her hair had since been dyed black as well, her green eyes still shining through the mask like emeralds against the darkness . The changes were meant to help protect their identities, after all, Ari Parker and Touya Todoroki were dead to the world, what would everyone think if they suddenly... weren't dead?
The two helped out when they could, mostly smaller crimes, bigger crimes when they could slip in and out. Today was a day for one of the smaller ones it seemed, as Touya and Ari lay crouching in wait for the perfect minute, Ari's hands twitched as she watched the criminal below corner a young woman with an expensive looking purse, her green eyes were narrowed and Touya nodded to her, she dropped down silently with the help of the rope he held, the darkness doing well in hiding her from view.
Ari grit her teeth as she stepped silently forward, her fingers moving as she warmed up her hands for her quirk to be at its most effective. She had to be quicker this time, as the man waved his knife around angrily as he spouted the usual bullshit, the woman pressing herself further against the wall with growing uncomfortableness. As soon as she was close enough, Ari shot out her hand, the familiar squeeze in her palms being felt as she froze the man in his spot, his lips snarling in irritation at the sudden loss of feeling.
She didn't have much longer before he snapped out of it, so she smiled as Dabi jumped from the short roof, rope in his hand, the woman darted away, running towards the bustling street and Ari cursed slightly, looking after her worriedly before huffing and taking the rope from her friend. She worked on tying his arms behind his back. He cursed all the while and as she watched his hands start to twitch the tiniest bit her heart raced in anticipation as she finished the knot, looking for Dabi and stepping back. Her friend stood in front of the man, who paled at the sight of him.
"Nighty night." Dabi smirked and slammed his head into the man's own, Ari looking at him with a slight gasp.
"Are you- are you kidding me?" She asked as she watched the man slump to the ground in unconsciousness.
"What?"
Ari sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Nevermind, let's just go before the heroes show up." Dabi smirked as he looked at the limp man , jerking his head the opposite way towards the shadowed part of the alley. Ari narrowed her eyes as she walked ahead, hands slipping into her pockets, something didn't seem quite right, she harshly elbowed Dabi and the black haired vigilante scowled playfully, she only nodded and tapped her fingers on one of her knife's sheaths.
He seemed to understand as smoke began to rise from his fingertips. Too quiet. Her eyes rose to the roof of the lower city buildings, catching just a glimpse of movement from above. "Did you see that?" She looked to Dabi and raised a brow.
"See what?"
"We're being trailed."
"You sure you got enough sleep last night shortstack?" Dabi teased and Ari glared at him.
"I slept fine. Got four hours.. and I'm not short. I'm average."
Dabi rolled his eyes. "A whole four hours? Wow, I'm jealous."
She snickered, elbowing him again playfully. "Yeah, you're jealous because you slept in today." She continued to scan the rooftops for another glimpse of white but she couldn't see anything, maybe she had imagined it?
Nope.
"Why would I be jealous-" Dabi started, but he wasn't able to finish.
The two whirled around as the sound of two feet hitting the ground sounded behind them, Ari flipped out her two daggers in her hands, clutching the handles as she glared threateningly through her mask. It wasn't anyone they couldn't handle though- she realized with a pang. She and Dabi had escaped Eraserhead's wrath more than a few times. His eyes glowed red and his hair flew up behind him, Ari no longer felt the subtle buzz of energy that constantly pulsed through her.
Amazing.
The temporary loss of her quirk wasn't a huge loss, sure it was a hindrance and she would put up a better fight with it but she'd trained for years under the commission and while she'd let up slightly (she wasn't fighting for her life training with Touya as she had been with the other girls) , her hand to hand hadn't.
"Nice to see you again Eraser." Dabi smirked. "You can find the criminal over that way."
"You're all criminals." Eraserhead growled out, narrowing his eyes through his goggles and sighing. "Just this once."
"That's what you said last time." Ari grinned at him and he shot her a warning glare, she swallowed. "Alright, alright." She looked to Dabi and he smirked. Eraserhead turned his back for a second, then there was a rush of hot air, and when he turned back around at the prickle of heat at the back of his neck, the two vigilantes were gone.
He grumbled something under his breath sighing as he looked at the man who was knocked unconscious, a bruise had begun to form on his forehead.
"Pesky teenagers."
On a rooftop nearby, Touya grumbled, holding a grinning Ari to his chest. "Annoying old man." He retorted, to no one in particular, a snicker escaping the girl's lips.
-
Ari smiled softly as she walked into the warehouse, it wasn't much, the walls were dirty and it smelled awful, but it was home. Her and Touya's. She jumped slightly at sturdy hands on her shoulders and then she grinned as she looked upwards, smirking at a head of black hair and blue eyes stared back down at her.
"Why so slow?" She quirked a brow teasingly, pulling away from him with a smirk. "Why so fast?" He shot back, twitching his eyes as she pulled at his sleeve, scowling up at him. "You reopened your stitches again Tou..."
"So I did..." Touya looked at the blood that trickled down from an open staple in his arm.
"You want me to get the kit?" She asked tenderly as her gaze flicked up to his softening one. "No...no I got it. You settle yourself on the couch.." He flicked her nose and she wrinkled it in mock irritation.
"Jackass." She muttered as she stepped back, humor dancing in her own eyes as she walked towards the couch and slumped into it, huffing. The thing was brown, it was roughed up on the edges but the fabric was still soft. She blinked at the rundown TV set in front of her before grabbing the remote from the arm of the couch.
She turned it on and there was only static at first, sometimes things were a little stubborn, sometimes you had to whack them around, she thumped the remote against her knee and surprisingly? The screen cleared up, only the corners of it dark around the edges. She melted back into the couch with a content sigh. "Hey Firecracker! You doin' good patching things up?" She called, only receiving a grunt in return. She looked at the screen briefly, nothing interesting really.
She rose from her seat with a mischievous grin, turning the corner. She saw him from behind, his teeth pulling against the bandages that he was wrapping messily around the cleaner parts of his arms, the ones that were tender, but not quite purple like most of his scars. She hummed as he finished up and he turned to her, rolling his eyes. "Couldn't wait, could you?"
"You could've asked for help." She crossed her arms. "Never easy to wrap your own arms."
"I'm good." He waved her off. "I managed,Cassie." She furrowed her brows, her bottom lip sticking out slightly. "You're not allowed to call me that outside of missions." Touya rolled his eyes. "Yeah, sure." He smirked. "C'mon, let's go." He jerked his head to the couch and she sighed, sprinting to the couch before he could beat her there, snuggling herself into her spot and sticking out her tongue.
"Really?" He raised a brow, chuckling.
"Really, what?" She asked innocently and she laughed as he unfolded the blanket and threw it over her form. "Asshole."
"Brat." He quipped back.
She pulled the blanket off of her face and smoothed it out on the couch so it was over her chest. "You sure you don't want to sleep here tonight? I can take the mattress, it's fine. It can't be too comfortable and it's only fair-" She babbled.
He huffed, sliding in next to her. "Just shut up." He said with a soft growl as he lifted the blanket to inch in comfortably next to her. His hand found hers and she gave it a squeeze, smiling at the heat that laced around her fingers from his own.
