Famous 'til Death
Born in 1925, Alexandria Sawer was a soon-to-be star of the stage.
Her name was uncommon for the girls during the time, however her parents wanted something different or rare. A name that meant something. The name Alexandria means "defender of men" which was a perfect name for her. At least as her parents thought. They wanted her to be strong, independent, a girl who could stand up for herself and not need a man. This was difficult due to the fact that, though it wasn't as bad as before, women were still fighting for many rights.
Alexandria, Alex for short, was only four when she got her first sibling. It was 1929, he was a little boy, a carrot top, who had curly hair and the brightest smile. He was merely a baby. They named him Daniel meaning "god is my judge".
Contrary to the majority of people giving up their children during the Great Depression, the Sawyer's adopted a child. Daniel was one of the children given up just days before the Sawyer's got him.
The Great Depression caused struggle and hardship for many during the 1930s. It started 1929 in the United States, where they lived, until the late 30s. It was one of the longest economic depressions of the 20th century. Many children were sent to orphanages because there parents didn't have enough money to take care of them. The unemployment rates shot up and the stock market crash of October 29, 1929, became known as Black Tuesday. Some enconomies were beginning to recover in the mid 30s but many still suffered from the effects lasting until the beginning of World War II. Cities that depended on heavy industry were hit very hard. The Great Depression had bad effects on both the rich and poor. The U.S. began recovery in 1933 as well as most places. It didn't return to 1929 GNP for over a decade.
Around the time of recovery in 1933, the Sawyer parents —Ethel and William, both born in 1895– gave birth to a little girl named Bonnie, meaning "pretty". Bonnie was born with Cataracts in both eyes. The family tried paying for them to be removed by a professional only to be short on cash. It went on for a bit and soon Bonnie couldn't see and went blind.
Bonnie and Alex had wavy, dark brown hair and emerald eyes. Alex, however, being born with freckles on her cheeks and nose. All three were pale, with Daniel being the palest. Daniel was sweet but he threw many tantrums. Bonnie was adorable and innocent but she lost faith in god due to her blindness. This leaves Alex being the most pure. She was a kind little girl but everyone gave her strange glares and seemed to be worried by her. Was it her sinister gaze? The fact she never smiled? Or was it that she hit a girl in the playground of her school.
Alex hit the girl over the head with her tin lunchbox. The girl had a finger to Alex's chest mocking and ridiculing her. She threw racial slurs at Alex. Alex was Turkish, so all the girls called her Asian. They say "Olauge" referring time Turkish people's dark eyes or "blackhead" referring to her dark hair. Despite Alex and Bonnie having green eyes, it it very rare and most Turkish people have darker eye colors such as brown. This is strange until you consider the fact that they are not all half Turkish like Alex and Bonnie. Their mother moved to America, from Turkey, for college. Where she met William, who taught her English. After about a year she was fluent and could speak well. They fell in love. This makes Alex and Bonnie half American as well.
It's a shame how bad Bonnies cataracts have gotten. Her beautiful green eyes foiled by a grey, clouded mess. She'll never get to see the beautiful emerald green. Truly a terrible fate was put upon this little girl.
