Fears

Hello everyone! I am sorry this has taken so long. Please enjoy this chapter.

NPOV

After a filling meal and great conversation the evening had begun to wind down. Kanan and Stephen were outside while Hera and Ashoka were inside doing the dishes. Ezra and Sabine had been sent to bed an hour ago.

"I guess the boy picked up on the tension while in town," Stephen stated taking the pipe from his mouth.

Kanan eyed him slightly.

"Ezra has always been perceptive, it's one of the reasons I don't hide a lot of things from him. He knows that something is about to happen and it has to do with you being here."

Stephen sighed before turning his attention to the sky.

"When I first got assigned to hunt down those men, all I knew is that they had broken out of jail. After a couple of weeks of tracking them I learned what their plan was. By then I decided it might just be easier to apprehend them when they arrived in Prairie Rose."

"But why me?" Kanan wondered. "Better yet who are they?"

"Ever heard of Leroy Gram?"

"The bank robber? That's whose after me? I thought he died years ago," Kanan said wide-eyed.

"He did; his oldest son, Floyd, is the one gunning for you. The ten year old that was killed in the shootout was Leroy's youngest child."

Kanan sighed feeling the old string of guilt raise its head. Even though it wasn't his gun that killed the kid he still shot the man's hand that was holding the weapon.

"Don't worry Son, you won't have to face them. As soon as Floyd and his goons make their move, Ashoka and I will arrest them," Stephen said patting his shoulder.

The younger looked at him and nodded but deep down he knew that to make things right, he was gonna have to face the past.

Ezra POV

I sighed turning over once more trying to go to sleep.

"Sabi?" I whispered glancing at the sheet that separated our halves of the room. "You awake?"

"Yes," she answered. "I'm too excited to sleep. Why are you awake?"

I sighed again settling on my back.

"I feel like something bad is about to happen."

"Oh Ezra, you're being silly. Papa got his papa back and we got a super cool aunt in the process," Sabine said.

I rolled my eyes slightly at that. Of course all she would be fascinated on Aunt Ashoka.

"But still..." I stressed.

She huffed and the bed squeaked indicating she had turned over forcibly.

"Just go to sleep, Papa will protect us."

Looking out the window, I could partially see the moon.

'What if Sabine is right and I am just being silly,' I thought to myself. 'But still I can't shake this feeling.'

Closing my eyes I turned over and let out a small huff. Maybe I am just being paranoid.

Inside Ezra's Dream

Everything was really dark and I could hear crows in the distance followed by low rumbles of thunder. I tried to see where I was when  I heard hurried footsteps. Turning toward the sounds I became nervous when Papa suddenly appeared, a panicked look on his face.

"EJ! There you are," he yelled holding out his hand.

"What's going on?" I asked taking it.

"Please Son, don't ask questions and listen to everything I say," Papa ordered his face hardening.

I nodded and before I could move we were outside. I gasped realizing that a storm was coming and the smell of smoke hung thick in the air.

"Come on Ezra, we got to go," Papa said tugging on my hand.

"But where's Mama and Sabine?" I protested.

Papa didn't respond except to pull on my arm a little bit more forcefully. Walking through the woods, I was really starting to panic. Even when something bad is happening Papa always tries to soothe my fears but now he's refusing to even look at me.

After a few minutes of walking we came into a small clearing and I was slightly relieved to see Depa tied up and waiting for us.

"Where's Phantom?" I asked looking around for my horse.

Papa sighed and scooped me up.

"Ezra listen, I need you to ride out of here and don't look back alright? Don't look back," he said putting me into my saddle.

Wait, my saddle? Looking down, I immediately recognized the scuffs on the horn that I had put there to tell the difference from mine and Sabine's. Looking at my father's face my question about Phantom died on my lips. Glancing back toward the house I could see thick billowing smoke and a distant terrified whinny. Looking at Papa once more tears filed my eyes.

"They're gone, aren't they?"

His hands paused from adjusting the straps and looked up at me. I could see the grief shining in his eyes but I could also see determination.

"Papa?"

"Ezra I love you so much, never forget that."

Glancing back toward the house I finally understand what was happening.

"No!"

Papa gave me a soft look and reached up to hug me.

"I have to Baby Boy, otherwise things are just going to get worse. Go into town and stay  with Zeb."

I opened my mouth but I wasn't able to say anything. Papa squeezed my shoulder before handing me the reins.

"I love you," he said slapping Depa on the rump.

As I rode off I heard a loud gunshot. Jerking Depa to a stop I looked back to see Papa fall to the ground and Ranger Dume standing over him.

"No!!"

 Reality

"No!" I cried jerking awake.

Glancing around I tried still my racing heart but no matter how much I tried, it wouldn't calm down. Getting out of bed, I peeked around the blanket and sighed seeing Sabine on her back snoring lightly. After making sure Mama and Papa were alive I made my way into the barn.

Kanan POV

A soft cry startled me into the waking world. I glanced over to see if it was Hera but she was snoring softly. Worried that it might be one of the kids, I went to get out of bed when our bedroom door handle began to rattle slightly. Shifting slightly so I could act if it was a threat I waited as the door cracked open. Luckily it was only Ezra, however he was gone as quickly as he had come. A minute later I heard the front open and shut.

"Mmm Kanan?" Hera mumbled opening an eye hearing the noise.

"Shh," I soothed kissing her on the head. "It's just Ezra, something's got him spooked. Go back to sleep."

She looked like she wanted to argue but sighed and fell back to sleep. Getting up I grabbed my gun and made my way outside. Since my son wasn't sitting on the porch I made my over to barn.

"What if I'm not being silly Phantom? What if what I saw is going to come true. I can't let that happen," I heard Ezra whimper.

What is wrong my boy?

"Ezra," I called softly stepping inside.

I must have startled him because the room suddenly went dark.

"Buddy it's just me," I said walking further into the barn.

I heard him sigh and the the room brightened.

"I guess you heard me," he mumbled.

"I did."

Ezra sighed before looking up at me.

"I'm sorry Papa, Sabine says I'm being silly but after my dream I just...I just..." he choked on the last part as tears started welling up in his eyes.

"Hey," I soothed wrapping my arms around him. "It's okay."

"But it's not though, I'm supposed to be big and tough, but...my dream, you...you, you died and I watched it happen. I let it happen," he cried burying his face against my chest.

"Shhh, it was just a dream; I'm here, I'm not going anywhere."

After a few minutes Ezra's sobbing turned into sniffles.

"Feeling better?" I asked kissing the top of his head.

"Yeah," he chuckled weakly. "I'm sorry I look like a baby but I'm scared. I don't want my dream to come true."

"I know," I smiled running a hand through his hair. "But if I'm being honest, I'm scared too."

"But..."

"Nope, no buts," I said kneeling down to his level. "It's okay to be scared, it reminds us that we are alive."

Ezra let out a soft huff and laid his head against my chest.

"What are you going to do about Grandpa?" He asked a few minutes later.

"Well, I don't know," I answered. "Truthfully, I don't expect him and Ashoka to stick around once their job is done."

"Sabine wouldn't mind if they did," he mumbled.

"Yes but your sister is...well she's....Son, your sister is just like Hera. Always attracted to people in power," I chuckled.

"So how come Mama married you and not Zeb or Chopper?"

I opened my mouth a few times trying to find a comeback but I kept drawing a blank.

"You know, I think someone is getting a mite to big for his britches."

I tried to hold the stern look on my face as he pulled back to give me a funny look, but couldn't do it.

"I have to admit Son, that was a good one; but answer me this, do you honestly think you could see your Mama married to either of them?"

He thought for a moment before his eyes widened.

"No."

Ruffling his hair an idea came to mind on how I can handle  this whole ordeal.

"Ezra, you asked what I was going to do about Grandpa?"

He nodded curiously.

"How would you like to help?"

His smile was answer enough.
