As the eldest of her kin, Amara Anderson Warner bore the weight of shielding her siblings from harm and hate. She was their shield, their guardian angel, their protector. Absorbing the blows and the pain that wrangled. Despite her sacrifice, she longed to flee from this family, this life, this misery. For the burden of protection weighed heavy on her soul and the desire for freedom consumed her whole.

No confidant to turn to, no ally to light her way. She carried on alone, with none to share her pain or fears. In her steadfast mind, her struggles were not for her siblings' ears.

She made a point to avoid the company of boys, men, and the opposite sex altogether, haunted as she was by her father's shadow. But fate had other plans when a witty, playful soldier caught her eye, drawing her in despite her reservations.

She, with her trust scarred by trauma, can't help but feel that there's more to his sudden closeness. Who is he, really, and what could he want from her?

She, the eldest of the Warner clan, felt a gnawing unease within. Her mind was plagued by voices that weren't of this world, visions that came unbidden, and dreams stained red with blood. Her eyes, too, betrayed her, shifting colors like the seasons, defying all sense of what was normal. She yearned to understand what set her apart, what made her different from the rest.

What magic did the random-cute-funny-reliable-soldier hold to earn her trust and make her feel safe? Why did Juliette Ferrars appear out of thin air, and why was Aaron so magnetically drawn to her? Why did Amara, for the first time, feel the urge to leave behind her siblings and embark on a journey to live her own life?

Amara's heart ached with worry, for she knew what was to come. What would be her father's response to this chaos that she found herself in? And what of her siblings, who dared not answer their father's calls and texts?
