My Dear Son,

I am always thinking of you. Your mother and I know that what you are doing is for the good of us all but it does not ease the pain of not having our only son with us here at home. Your letters to us tell us of some the hardship and experience you are enduring. Mother and I need you to know that we are immensely proud of our soldier son. You were never trained for this army life but we both know that you will carry out your duties for King and Country to the best of your ability.

When I served in the Boer War I experienced nothing like the conditions you now have to bear. You left us as a boy you will return to us as a man - and a better one than most can ever be.

Them over there can cover you with mud and medals, when you come home to us we will cover you with love and admiration.

We know you will remain safe as we know God is looking over you for Mother and I ask him to do this each day in our prayers.
