Chapter One | Aurora's 12th Birthday
Aurora didn't know what to do. The birthday card was unexpected and she knew it was highly unlikely that Will would have sent the card to her. Without thinking she hid the card at the bottom of her underwear drawer. She had to figure out what everything meant before she moved on to telling her mom about the card, she didn't want to worry her not when she had a job which she had to focus on, the card would probably worry her more than anything.
As she chose her outfit for the day she decided that she wouldn't think of the card for the rest of the day, it was going to be a lot harder than expected but she didn't want the random birthday card that was on her bed to ruin her birthday, she didn't mind if her mom and the rest of the BAU ended up having to leave because of a case because their job is way more important than a simple birthday card.
The blonde girl was looking forward to the day, she was going to be spending the morning with JJ, Will and Henry, something she had always loved. Then in the afternoon JJ and Will were throwing a little birthday party for the birthday girl which everyone from the BAUwas attending as well as Aurora and Henry's babysitter Mia Keller and Aurora's best friends Bexley and Noah.
Aurora quickly showered and then changed into the outfit she had chosen before hand. As she got dressed into her Navy Blue skater skirt and white T-Shirt she couldn't stop thinking about the birthday card. It was so cryptic but at the same time it wasn't, it said it was from her dad but she didn't know him, she didn't really want to know him, that was until she found the card. Towel drying her hair she decided to leave it down instead of styling it into her usual braids. Once she had finished getting dressed she headed downstairs to open her presents. As Aurora got downstairs she saw presents placed beside the coffee table in the living room and Henry began toddling over to her. A smile formed on the 12 year olds face as she picked up her little brother.
"Happy Birthday Aurora" both JJ and Will said simultaneously as she picked Henry up and held him on her hip.
"Thank you Mom, Thank you Will!" Jennifer smiled walking over to the two adults.
"And thank you Mr" she said giving Henry a small kiss on the cheek and tickling his sides gently making him giggle Aurora then sat on the floor with Henry sitting on her lap
"Do you want to help me open my presents" Aurora asked the boy who was sat on her lap happily, she'd always let him help her. She got comfortable and JJ got ready to hand her daughter her presents.
"This is from your grandma" JJ said handing her a gift wrapped in pink and purple wrapping paper, the wrapping paper was so pretty and she loved it. Aurora nodded and took the gift and let Henry help her rip open the wrapping paper. As she opened the gift Aurora's eyes lit up when she saw the musical jewellery box which she saw and immediately fell in love which when she was out with her grandmother when she was visiting, the young girl had wanted a jewellery box for her bracelets and rings which were all currently sat in trinket dishes on her dresser. The box was a blush pink colour and when you opened it there was a ballerina which went around with music. She love didn't think her grandmother would remember yet she did and she was so happy.
"Grab remembered" Aurora said as she admired the jewellery box opening the lid as she did so and watching the little ballerina dancing around.
JJ then handed Aurora maybe next gift which was from her grandfather. She looked confused. He hadn't sent her a present for the last two years so she didn't expect anything now, she didn't even know what he could possibly think of getting her. Aurora unwrapped the small gift and pulled out two bookmarks, some marker pens and a colouring book, she wasn't really into art as much as she was reading and Soccer but the thought was there. She was still greatful for the gift.
"I love the bookmarks" Aurora smiled as she showed JJ and Will the two book marks, one was yellow with Belle from beauty and the beast on and the other was a rainbow in stripes. JJ then handed Aurora her next gift which was from her. The twelve year old opened the gift and saw the Harry Potter series books! A little excited squeel left the girls mouth as she saw the books. She had wanted them for a while but never got round to buying them either her pocket money.
"Thank you mom" Aurora beamed happily.
"Now i know you didnt ask for these but I saw you looking at them the of the day and you kept telling me you didnt need any but I had to get them for you anyway" Will said as he handed Aurora a shoebox, immediately Aurora knew what they were, the Soccer Boots. The girl didn't expect these seeing as they were expensive in her eyes, she didn't need new ones she had just saw them when she was out with Will and Henry.
"Will! You didnt have to get them. I" Aurora carefully lifted Henry off her lap and immediately went and wrapped her arms around Will. She was in shock that he had went back to buy the shoes for her.
"Thank you" she said as she kept the only father figure she's had in a warm embrace, she knew how much the soccer boots were, the ones she liked and the ones he got were rather expensive
The family continued with Aurora opening her presents until JJ and Will held an envelope which held adoption papers, The couple had discussed the whole thing and JJ knew how her daughter saw Will as her dad and he wanted to adopt her so they were going to give the adoption papers to her today and she can accept them if she wants.
"What's this?" Aurora said as she pulled the stack of papers out of the envelope.
"Adoption papers, if you want them, Will wants to adopt you" JJ informed the 12 year old whose eyes filled with tears.
"Yes." Was all Aurora said before she looked up to her mom and will.
"Does that mean I can call you Dad?" Aurora asked, of course the birthday card was more likely from her biological father but she didn't need him, she didn't know who he was but Will had always been their for her since her mom had met him, he treated her like she was his own.
"If you want. I won't force you into anything you don't want do" Will reminded the 12 year old who smiled widely, she'd almost slipped up and called him Dad on many occasions but she always stopped herself but now he was going to be her dad, he was adopting her and even though that won't make him her biological father she still loved the thought of him being her father.
"I love you Dad, I love you mom" Aurora said as she once again got up and wrapped her arms around both her parents separately. Aurora was most definitely spoilt and she already knew she'd be even more spoilt especially by Penelope Garcia, the 12 year old loved the older woman, she was like her auntie, well the whole of the BAU were like her aunts and uncles and she loved them like family.
It was around 2pm when the guests for Aurora's birthday party arrived. The first two people to arrive was Bexley and Noah, her two best friends. It was a nice day outside so the three friends sat on the back porch steps together talking. Aurora laughing at Noah telling stupid jokes like always and Bexley talking about her last lesson of the day seeing as the school had half day. The twins had brought Aurora a gift which was going to be opened later that day, she didn't expect a present from them, she even told them not to on multiple occasions but they didn't care, She was their best friend after all.
After the two friends arrived, the next guest was Mia, she came with a gift bag with a couple of little gifts for Aurora. Mia had been babysitting Aurora since she herself had turned 14 before that Mia's mom was her babysitter so you could say Mia and Aurora have grown up together, they are good friends from it all. Mia sat with Aurora, Bexley and Noah joining in the conversation they were now having. Even while talking to the three teens Aurora was still unable to think of anything but the birthday card. After Mia almost everyone else had arrived. Aaron Hotchner had brought Jack along to the party. Aurora didn't mind, she often had a kick about with the younger boy.
"Happy Birthday Beautiful Girl" Penelope said making the 12 year old jump, she hadn't greeted everyone let alone knew they were here yet so when Penelope spoke, it scared her. Aurora quickly jumped up and gave the older woman a hug happily.
"Thank you Pen" Aurora said wrapping her arms around her. She was smiling happily as she hugged the older woman
"Have you had a good day so far?" Penelope asked as the pair of them pulled apart.
"Yeah. Mom and Will have definitely spoilt me. I got the Harry Potter books from my mom" Aurora paused taking a breath before she continued to speak
" mom, Will and Henry got me more books!" Giggled Aurora as she bounced on the balls of her feet, she loved reading so she was clearly excited by that and the fact it was her birthday made her more excited
"And Will is adopting me! Isn't that amazing. I can call him dad! He brought me some new soccer boots too which I love but I said he didn't have to buy them. are so pretty. Can I show you?" Aurora beamed excitedly, she was definitely hyper but Penelope didn't mind at all, she enjoyed a happy Aurora rather than how she was before Jennifer started home school for her.
"How about you show me later? I think I should share the birthday girl with her guests. Don't you" Penelope smiled to the younger girl who nodded
"Okay. I'll go and say hi to everyone." Aurora giggled before she jumped off the porch and onto the grass where Emily was talking to her mom. Aurora made her way over to the two women and smiled.
"Hi" she grinned to Emily.
"Hey kiddo. Happy birthday" Emily said giving the younger girl a hug, Aurora hugged Emily back with a smile.
"Thank you" Aurora said in response to Emily.
"Are you having a good day?" Emily asked the 12 year old.
"I am" Aurora answered continuing to smile.
"Has mom told you?" Aurora asked grinning happily
"Told me what?" Emily asked, she did think it was something about the adoption that they had spoke about a while ago.
"Will is adopting me! He's going to be my dad and I can call him Dad now" aurora giggles happily. JJ watches her daughter as the excitement and happiness radiates from her.
"That's amazing news Rory" Emily smiled to the younger girl who nodded happily.
"I don't need a biological father not when I have Will who treats me like his own" Aurora said smiling. JJ looked towards her daughter with a small frown, she never really mentioned her biological father or wanting to know him so it kind of shocked her that her daughter had brought him up now.
Aurora decided to take another look at the card and she wanted to see Spencer, she hadn't seen him yet and he always had a way of making her think of anything else, she learnt something new almost all the time when she's with him. As she headed inside the cryptic message continued to play in her mind
'Follow the path of forgotten stars to unveil your true destiny'
Aurora wished she understood what it meant, she had never been particularly good at riddles, especially ones so cryptic. She did think about asking Spencer what he thought the card could mean but then he would have to tell her mom about the card and Aurora didn't rent that, not yet anyway, right now she wanted to keep it on the down low so she didn't give her mom unnecessary stress and worry... of course Aurora would tell her mom about the card when the time is right, when she's figured it all out but until then she couldn't bring herself to worry her.
Aurora made her way into the house and through to the living room which was where she saw Hotch and Spencer. She had wondered where the two of them were after Jack was outside with Noah, Bexley and Mia. Hotch was on the phone but it didn't look serious which she hoped meant there wasn't a case that they were needed for. The twelve year old went over to Spencer who was looking at the pile of books which she had received for her birthday which were all stacked on the coffee table seeing as she hadn't taken them to her room yet.
"Like my new stash of books? I don't know where to start with them" Aurora laughed lightly as she stopped in front of him.
"You've got loads to keep you busy" Spencer nodded.
"Plus more in my room which I've not read. But I think I'll still need a visit to the book store. I can't resist looking at books" Aurora smiled happily.
"But seriously I'm honestly so lucky to have gotten these books and all the presents from mom and Will. From everyone infact" aurora said smiling, she was more than greatful for everything she's received.
"You're a turning into a little bookworm" Spencer smiled to the young girl who giggled.
"Who would have thought I would love reading after struggling to read for years. Being dyslexic has its down side" Aurora sighed, before JJ had taken the young girl out of school she had been diagnosed with dyslexia which now Aurora thought of it she could see why she struggled all this time but since she got her yellow overlay she'd been getting a lot better.
"You've grown so much. We are all proud of you!" Spencer reminded the younger girl who nodded.
"I know" she said biting her lip. Now would have been the perfect time to bring up the card, ask for his advice but she still didn't know if she should or not so the young girl pushed it down and forced herself to not think about telling anyone about the card. Aurora took herself up to her room after talking with Spencer for a couple more minutes and she took herself into her bedroom.
Once Aurora was in her bedroom she shut her door slightly, leaving it open just a crack, she opened her underwear draw and pulled out the card from the bottom of it. The twelve year old walked over to her bed and sat on the edge facing her window with her back to the door.
"Who could have sent me this" Aurora mumbled to herself as her eyes ran over the card. Reading and re-reading what was wrote on the inside. She was trying to figure out anything about who sent the card but all she had was more questions, yes the card said Dad inside but that didn't mean anything to her because she had no idea who her dad was.
"There has to be more clues" Aurora groaned frustrated with herself for not being able to figure anything out.
"You okay Ro?" Came Mia's voice from being her, the older teen was coming to check on Aurora since she hadn't came back out.
"I'm fine. Was just having a moment to myself." Aurora said quickly trying to hide the card she was holding but she wasn't quick enough.
"What's that?" Mia asked which lead to Aurora explaining the whole card situation to the teen.
"Nothing. Come on let's go back downstairs" Aurora tried to change the subject almost as immediately as it started.
"It's not nothing otherwise you would have shown me. Oh please tell me you're not smoking" Mia said worrying about the twelve year old.
"I'm not smoking Mia!" Aurora rolled her eyes. Trying to make the card hidden
"It's a birthday card what's it doing up here?l mia asked giving the blonde in front of her a confused look.
"Look if I tell you then you have to promise not to tell my Mom, Will or anyone else down there. That meant hiding all your tells from the" Aurora said trying not to give out much.
"You know I'll have to tell them if it means you're in danger." Mia told the girl who nodded but the card couldn't put her in danger. Not really.
"It's a card from my biological dad. It was on my bed after I had breakfast. I could end up finding him and getting to know him. I never thought about that before" Aurora said handing Mia the card and she read it.
"Ro' you need to tell your Mom and Will! This Card, it could lead you to something bad." Mia said to Aurora who shook her head.
"No Mia. You can't tell them. I promise I will but not today. Let me at least try and figure out what the message means. Then I will tell them" Aurora lied mentally crossing her fingers hoping Mia would believe in what she was saying.
"Fine Aurora but you have a week and if you tell me you haven't told them by then. Well I will tell them" Mia told Aurora seriously
"Deal" Aurora said and smiled. She already was planning on lying to Mia, the things is she was hoping Mia would fall for it.
The five children were sat getting ready to have a little game of football with Mia the referees Auoroa and Jack were on one team and Bexley and Noah were on the other. They thought of being girls vs boys but that wouldn't have been fair seeing as Noah wasn't a footballer. Not like Aurora and Bexley, they were on the girls team and both girls were pretty good.
"We're going to beat you two" Aurora grinned across to her two best friends. Jack nodded in agreement.
"Bexah vs Aurck who shall be champion of today 2v2 match only one team will win" Mia grinned coming up with two names for the teams. Aurora rolled her eyes at the teen but got ready for the match. Bexley and Noah were the team doing kick off. The younger team were on point, tackling the twins and preparing to score. Bexley got in the goal just as Aurora kicked the ball, it went in at the corner. Jack cheered for his team mate and Aurora smiled. She didn't expect the ball to go in but pretty impressed that it did.
The kids continued the match Aurora and Jack winning with 3-2. Aurora took herself to get a drink and ran her hand through her hair which was now messy, her skirt was twisted too from the match, after downing a glass of water in the kitchen Aurora adjusted her skirt and straightened out her hair before heading outside. It was time for her presents, aurora always found it kind of nerve racking opening presents in front of people who weren't family, and that meant everyone from the BAU and her friends.
Aurora began opening the presents from Bexley and Noah, Bexley got her some room decor soccer themed while Noah got her a gift voucher for a book store with a stationary set. After Bexley and Noah's gift was Mia. She got the twelve year old a new training outfit and a new skipping rope which she needed after her old one broke, she didn't even know how that happened. Spencer had brought the twelve year old a book which the two had spoke about, it was called 'The Fisher King' by Leonore Fleischer. Penelope did indeed spoil the twelve year old buying her a notebook, some nail polish and a new outfit which she knew Aurora would love and a pig stuffed animal which was one of the young girls favourite animals.
Aurora was overwhelmed with the love she had from everyone, she thanked everyone for their gifts. It was time for her birthday cake, JJ and Will ordered a soccer themed cake from a local bakery. Aurora loved it and thanked the two adults. Before Aurora knew it her friends had to leave to go home seeing as they had school the next day. Mia left too as she had a lot of homework to catch up on. Aurora took her books to her room and placed them on her desk, she was going to sort them out the next day and then she went back to everyone else, well the guests who were still around.
"Thank you for today mom" Aurora said as she rested her head on JJ's shoulder while they sat with everyone. The rest of the party decided to order pizza for dinner. Not that Aurora minded, she loved pizza.
"Your welcome princess. Have you had a good day?" JJ asked planting a small kiss on her forehead.
"I have. I'm so greatful for everything I've got today and for everyone too." Aurora said glancing up to her mother who smiled down to her daughter.
"Are you sure you're okay with Will adopting you?" JJ asked the child wanting to make sure that she was okay with Will adopting her.
"I'm a thousand percentage positive I'm fine with it. I don't care what anyone says he is my dad. Were a family" Aurora said as she looked down, one of her tells, she was lucky her mom wasn't an actual profiler and just a press liaison, but with the profilers sat around her she knew they would be able to tell she was hiding something.
"I love you mom" Aurora said softly
"I love you too Aurora" JJ said kissing the twelve years olds forehead again. Aurora smiled as she kept her head on her mom's shoulder. It had been a long day and she was tired but she had such a good day and couldn't thank everyone enough for the day she had had.
