Family
It was the middle of the afternoon. The sun shone brightly, but it didn't bring any warmth. Central was a swarm of colours. Red, yellow and orange leaves covered the ground. People were wearing their bright warm jackets with hats to match. A bitter cold wind blew, blowing the remaining of the leaves that were hanging on the bare trees to the ground. Ed and Al were making their way to Central Command. They just finished a lead on the philosopher's stone that sadly turned up nothing. Ed sneezed.
"Damn it, it's cold". Ed said, shivering.
"Maybe if you wore something warmer then, you won't be feeling so cold". Al said to Ed.
Ed grumbled something inaudible. They got to central command and walked in.
"It's nice and warm in here". Ed said with a sigh.
Al laughed. Ed glared at him.
"What are you laughing about"? Ed said.
"Nothing" was Al's reply.
An officer came up to them. The officer was a male with short brown hair. He saluted the boys.
"Are you Edward Elric, The Fullmetal Alchemist"? The officer said. Ed nodded. "There's someone on the line for you". The officer said.
Ed looked at Al than back at the officer. They followed the officer into the room with phones lined up on both sides of the room. Ed and Al had already been in this room a couple of times. The officer showed some telephone and with that the officer left them alone. Ed picked up the phone wondering who could be on the other end of it.
"Hello, this is Edward Elric". Ed said.
"Hey Ed, why so formal".
"Winry, what are you calling me for". Ed said a little surprised.
Winry sighed. "You guys never check your calendar do you"? Winry said.
"We do"! Ed yelled into the phone.
"If you do then, tell me what is happening this weekend"? Winry yelled back.
"Um ..."
Ed didn't have a clue to what she was talking about.
"You don't know do you". Winry said a little calmer. "This weekend is Thanksgiving, you know the holiday where you spent time with your family and friends. The last time we had Thanksgiving dinner together with before you guys decide to go to Central and become a State Alchemist, so I phone you to ask you if you and Al wanted to come to Resembool and have Thanksgiving dinner with us".
Ed was a little taken back by this request. It sounded nice, but by the time they travelled to Resembool and back they already on their way with another lead. Ed wanted to find the Philosopher's stone as fast as he could, he didn't have time to have Thanksgiving dinner.
"I'm sorry; Winry, but we can't make it". Ed said firmly.
"Why not, oh, I know you guys are going on some crazy, dangerous mission, and that's why, isn't it". Winry said a little annoyed.
Ed gulped. "Oh, look at the time I have to go. Bye". Ed said quickly.
"I swear Edward Elric, if you hang"-Ed hung up the phone cutting Winry off mid sentence.
He knew that what he did probably wasn't a smart idea and he was probably going to get an earful about it when he visited them to get is arm and leg repaired, but he was telling Winry the truth. He really did have to go. The Colonel was expecting them to be in his office at 1 o'clock and it was now 1:15. The Colonel would be mad, but it wasn't like Ed had been late before. He just used it to his advantage this time.
"What did Winry want"? Al asked.
"She had invited us to Thanksgiving dinner, but I told her that we can't make it. We are so close to finding it". Ed made sure to emphasize "it" so Al would understand that he was talking about the Philosopher's stone. "We don't have time to stop". Ed said.
Al nodded.
"It would have been nice to see Winry and granny once in a while". Al said.
"Did I overhear that your girlfriend had called you"?
Ed and Al looked behind them to see Hughes.
"She isn't my girlfriend". Ed yelled.
"When will you guys learn, when a beautiful woman asked you to hang out you says yes"? Hughes said as if Ed never said anything.
"Anyway". Hughes said as he reached into his pocket.
Ed knew exactly what he was doing and he didn't have time for it.
"Sorry Hughes, but we don't have time to look at pictures of your daughter, we're supposed to meet the Colonel at 1:00 and we're running a bit late". Al said nicely.
Hughes looked a little sad.
"Okay, fine, but the next time I will see you're going to have to look at all of them". Hughes said with a smile.
"Yeah, okay". Ed said as he turns. He and Al walked out of the room.
Later that day, Hughes's POV
Hughes opened the door to Roy's office.
"Yo, Roy how are you"! Hughes said, closing the door and walking up to Roy's desk.
Everyone looked up from what they were doing. Roy sighed.
"Hughes I don't have time for this". Roy said.
"Sure you do. I was thinking about inviting you and your team over to my house for Thanksgiving dinner, how does that sound"? Hughes said happily.
Roy was about to objective to the idea when Hawkeye spoke up.
"I think that's a wonderful idea". Hawkeye said.
Everyone looked at her including Roy.
"I agree with the lieutenant here. It would be nice to get together and celebrate Thanksgiving". Havoc said.
"Yeah, and we can't forget about Edward and Alphonse. They're a part of our team too". Fuery said.
"That reminds me. They had gotten a phone call from Winry. She had called them to ask them to go to Resembool for Thanksgiving dinner, but Edward was being Edward declined her offer. I think it would be nice to invite her". Hughes said.
Everyone nodded.
"Then, it's settled everyone is coming over to my house on Saturday. See you then". Hughes said, walking out of the office before Roy could say anything.
Roy sighed. He guessed he had no choice but to go, which means he has a cancel his date this weekend.
"Why does the Colonel look so down"? Breta said, looking at the Colonel and then to everyone in the room. Havoc shrugged his shoulders.
"He had a date this weekend and now he's going to have to cancel it". Hawkeye said not stopping what she was doing." Know I suggest that if you want to go to Hughes's Thanksgiving dinner party then you would stop chatting and start working". Hawkeye said.
Everyone quickly nodded their heads and got back to work. Hughes walked into the room with all the phones and picked up one. He dialled the Rockbell's number. He invited Winry to the dinner party and she happily said yes. Hughes hangs up the phone and called the Elric's. With much pleading and telling Ed that Winry was coming Ed agreed to come.
Saturday evening, Edward's POV
Ed couldn't believe that he let Hughes talk him into going to this Thanksgiving dinner. He and Al were going to spend all weekend at the library trying to find anything that could lead them to the Philosopher's Stone.
"Brothers don't look so down. We spent almost all day in the library and we can spend all day in the library tomorrow. We should take a break once in a while and have some fun". Al said.
Al was right. It wouldn't hurt to take a break once in a while.
"Yeah, you're right". Ed said.
Ed and Al got to the Hughes's door and Ed knocked once. Elicia was the one that opens the door.
"Mommy, there are people at the door". Elicia said.
Gracia came to the door.
"Hello Edward and Alphonse". Gracia said.
"Hello Gracia". Al said.
"Come on in". Elicia said enthusiastically.
Ed and Al walked into their home. Elicia shut the door behind them Gracia showed them to the living room, where everyone was. Winry and Hughes were sitting on the couch. Elicia ran to sit on Hughes's lap. Mustang and his team were all gathered in the living room, sitting on chairs as well. It looked like Ed and Al were the only ones left to arrive. All conversations seemed to stop once Ed and Al stepped into the room. Winry got up off the couch and walked up to Ed with a dangerous look in her eyes. Ed gulped. He only just remembered that he hung the phone up on Winry. He knew that he was to get a lecture on it, but he didn't think he would get a lecture this soon. Winry marched right to Ed.
"You idiot, why did you hang up the phone on me"! Winry yelled.
"Because I was telling the truth I really did have to go". Ed yelled back.
"The least you could have done is let me finish, but no you just had to hang up the phone". Winry yelled.
"Guys"! Al yelled to make them stop arguing.
"What"! Both Ed and Winry yelled.
"I think you guys can talk about this later". Al said calmly.
Winry sighed. "You're right".
Ed let out a sigh of relief. Winry turned back to Ed.
"But don't think you're getting off the hook just yet". Winry said in a deadly voice.
Gracia came out of the kitchen and walked up to Winry.
"Winry can you help me in the kitchen".
Winry smile at Gracia.
"Yes, I love would love to help". Winry said.
Winry turned and walked into the kitchen while Gracia went to Hawkeye to ask her for help to. Everyone looked surprised that Gracia would ask Hawkeye to help too. Hawkeye nodded her head and got up. Both Gracia and Hawkeye went into the kitchen. Ed and Al sat down and joined the party. After the confusion died down everyone began talking about everything.
Hughes told everyone the cute things Elicia did and had a lot of pictures to go along with the story. The floor was covered in pictures. Ed had always wondered where he keeps them all. After that, Roy decided it would be fun to make fun of Ed's height. Everyone joined in telling jokes or stories about Ed height. Al had to hold Ed back or else Ed would have attacked everyone in the room. There was a lot of yelling and laughing.
By the time dinner was ready everyone sides hurt from laughing too much. The dining room table was set with shiny silver plates. There was a big turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and so much more. No one had seen this much food in their lives.
Everyone sat down the table and dig in. The food was divine and wonderful. Everyone had big smiles on their faces. Everyone went silent all you hear were the forks scraping the plates. Ed felt a little sad that Al couldn't enjoy food, but he could see that Al was content sitting there enjoying everyone's company. After dinner Al helped clean up, when Gracia went into the kitchen to make her famous apple pie. Everyone else went back to the living room to talk some more.
"So Winry, how long are you staying in Central for". Ed asked.
Winry gave him a death glare. Ed could tell them Winry was still pissed about him hanging up the phone on her. The death glare was gone as quickly as it came.
"Hughes offered me to stay here for the night, and then I will be heading home tomorrow". Winry said.
"Oh", was all Ed said.
Ed smiled. Al was right, it was nice to take a break from researching and have fun. It was nice to hang out with everyone, even if it was just for one night. Everyone could forget what they've been through and have a night were they could just smile and not worry about tomorrow.
Ed missed having Thanksgiving dinner with Winry and granny. After pie everyone was stuffed and couldn't eat another thing. Elicia fell asleep on the couch and Hughes was there with his camera taking pictures of her. One by one people decided that it was time to go. Everyone said goodbye and left the Hughes's house with a full belly and a happy smile on their face. Ed and Al decided that it was time to leave. Winry opened the door.
"Goodbye". Ed said as he turned to leave.
"Wait". Both Ed and Al stopped and turned around.
"What". Al asked. Winry smiled.
"We should do this again next year, but this time you have to come to Resembool". Winry said.
"We'll see". Ed said and turned back around.
Winry closed the door and Ed and Al walked down the hallway. Ed smiled. He realized something tonight. He realized that he didn't just have Al; he had Roy and his team and Hughes and his family.
"What are you smiling about"? Al asked.
"I just realized that we aren't alone anymore". Ed said.
Al nodded. Ed and Al gained a new family. Even if they do make fun of Ed's height and they don't always see eye to eye, they could still get along. They could smile and laugh even if times were grey. Ed never realized it before, but it was nice to forget everything that he and Al had been, even if it was just for one night. Ed was thankful that he spent Thanksgiving with people he cared about and not in some library.
