Chapter 15
"Home sweet home." Tim announces as he pulls into their drive.
"Thank, God." Avi says as he opens the door to the van and falls out onto his knees onto the lawn.
"Seriously? Wasn't you the one..." Tim starts with a raised brow.
"Never mind what I said." Avi laughs as he stands from his kneeling position.
"Look how beautiful the trees have gotten." Kirstie says as she points at the fall foliage. "All the yellow, orange and red leaves."
"It's definitely much colder here." Tim says as he shivers.
"It's not cold." Adam laughs at his cold-natured husband. "This is perfect weather."
Kirstie goes to unlock the door as the guys begin to unload the van.
The sound of a vehicle pulling into the drive catches their attention.
"What the f*ck?" Tim mumbles as he sees a cop car pulling up behind the van. "This can't be good."
"Just stay calm." Adam whispers.
"Good afternoon." One of the police officers says as he gets out of the car.
"Good afternoon." Tim replies as he walks toward the patrol car. "May we help you?"
"Yes, we're looking for a Kirstin Maldonado?" The cop states.
"I'm Kirstie. But it's Kaplan now." Kirstie says as she cautiously walks up beside the hitman. "Is there a problem, officer?"
"You own a house on Everett Lane? Am I correct?" The officer asks.
Tim slowly turns his head and connects eyes with Avi. A frightened look appears on the bearded man's face as he steps closer.
"Uh, yes. Yes, I do." Kirstie answers as she tries hard not to panic. "Well, the lease is in my name but my husband, Avi and I actually own the house."
"What's this about?" Avi finally gets the courage to speak.
"Where were you a week ago? Last Monday to be exact." The officer continues to ask questions.
"We were vacationing in Belize. As a matter of fact, we just now returned home." Avi answers as he takes Kirstie by the hand.
"Is there a reason for this questioning, Officer?" Tim asks.
"And you are?" The officer asks, politely.
"Tim Foust. I own this place. We all live here together." Tim answers.
"Oh, so you no longer reside at the house on Everett Lane?" The officer asks, turning his attention back to the Kaplans.
"No. We haven't lived there in quite some time." Avi answers, shaking his head.
"We left and haven't been back since." Kirstie adds. "What's going on.
"Miss Maldonado, uh, Mrs. Kaplan." The officer corrects himself before continuing. "Two bodies have been found inside the house."
"WHAT!!!???" Everyone in the gang shouts, startling the policeman.
"We received a tip from an unidentified teenage male that his friends, acting upon a dare, broke into the house Monday night. They were never heard from again. Officers arrived at the home to find a window broken out near the rear of the home. Upon entering the house, officers found two mutilated bodies inside the home. Now, I have no clue as to what happened inside the house but both officers are in the hospital in complete shock. Neither has spoken a word since. The coroners that removed the bodies said both officers were fine when they left them alone inside the house." The policeman says.
"Oh, my God." Kirstie says, bringing a trembling hand up to cover her mouth.
"I knew something like this was bound to happen." Avi says, putting an arm around his wife as he looks up at Tim.
"Why do you say that, Mr. Kaplan?" The officer asks.
"Officer, I used to live with the Kaplans. My house burned and they invited me to stay with them." Tim answers quickly. He was afraid that Avi was fixing to panic and say too much. "Uh, we decided to do some renovating. When we did, weird stuff started happening."
"Weird stuff? Such as?" The officer asks.
"I know it sounds crazy but poltergeist-type activity." Tim says, making the whole story up as he went. "Hammers being thrown at us while we worked. Ladders being pushed over while we were standing on them."
"Tim even got scratched on his back." Adam adds.
"We decided that we needed to get away from the place. So we came here to get our minds to ease. I found out the place was for sale so I bought it. And we haven't been back to the other house since." Tim says.
"I even had a nightmare that we were all murdered inside the house. It was just too real not to be taken seriously." Avi says.
"I just don't know what to do with the house. I can't sell it. Something bad may happen to whoever buys it." Kirstie says. "And if there is something evil inside the house, tearing it down or burning it might release it to God knows where."
"You're right, Mr. Foust, this does sound crazy. But I believe you. I've always believed in that sort of stuff. And truthfully, it had to be something evil to tear those kids bodies up the way they were." The police officer says as he shakes his head. "And the officers that are lying in the hospital right now are trained officers. Both have been with the force thirty plus years. They've seen it all."
"This is horrible." Esther says as she shakes her head in disbelief.
"What do you suggest they do with the house?" Eddie asks. "God knows, we don't want any more trespassers to end up like those kids."
"I would suggest boarding up the windows and doors. Maybe even put a fence of some kind around the place." The cop says. "One that people can't climb over."
"We'll get it done." Tim nods.
The police officer soon left. The gang stood in silence as each stares ahead of them as if they were in complete shock.
"See?" Avi breaks the silence. "That would have been us if we had gone back."
"I think I still have that medium's number." Tim says. "Maybe she can tell us how to seal the place permanently."
"That's a good idea." Chance nods. "We definitely don't want those things figuring out how to get out."
Tim pulls out his phone and begins scrolling down his contact list.
"Here it is. Amy Allen." Tim reads.
"You give her a call and we'll finish unloading the van." Chris says.
"This is crazy." Austin says as they enter their home. "Sounds like something straight from a horror movie."
"Well, I have some good news and bad news." Tim says as he walks into the house. "Bad news is, Ms. Allen is tied up and won't be able to come."
"That's not good." Adam says.
"But, she told me what to do to seal in the spirits that are inside. Sounds pretty easy." Tim shrugs.
"Okay? So what do we do?" Chris asks.
"We spray a mixture of salt and water along the base of the house. Where the house meets the ground. We have to make sure not to miss one spot. Then we pour some holy water at each corner of the house." Tim answers. "She said boarding up the windows and doors are a great idea to keep any trespassers out."
"Where are we supposed to get some holy water?" Adam asks.
"I know someone that goes to the Catholic church in town. He'll be able to get us some." Nate says.
"She did say something that kinda unnerved me though." Tim says as he runs a hand through his hair.
"I'm not sure if I want to hear this." Kirstie says with a nervous smile.
"She made it very clear that while we are boarding up the windows for us NOT to look through or even glance at the windows." Tim says. "She repeated that several times."
"That's kinda creepy." Chance says. "Did she say what could happen?"
"If you look into the eyes of the evil spirit inside, they can possibly control your mind." Tim says.
"So much for a 'Welcome Home', huh." Avi says. "Timbo, this is the very reason that I didn't want to come home."
