twenty-one.

After leaving the meat trail they finally arrived at the destination, Steve being the first to speak when they got there.

"Oh yeah. Yeah this will do. This will do just fine." Steve said, taking off his sunglasses as he started to walk forwards. Christine was quick to follow after him, giving Dustin a thumbs up as Steve commended him for his good idea. They continued the trail, dropping the rest of their meat buckets in a big pile.

"I said medium-well!" They all turned their heads to look at Lucas and Max, Christine slightly smiling as she saw them. She gave Max a wave, the girl returning it as they headed over.

"Who's that?" Steve asked, his head turning to Dustin. His face slightly fell as he realized how exactly that girl was, the one who they had talked about on the whole walk over here. Dustin grabbed Lucas, pulling him behind a car and the two of them having a discussion. Steve started directing the two girls, Christine walking over to Max and speaking.

"Hey what're you doing here?" Christine asked, grabbing a scrap of metal and throwing it onto the pike that Steve was making. Max followed suit, shaking her head as she answered the older girl.

"Lucas told me some bullshit story and this is my evidence." Max said, gesturing towards the bus. Christine walked over and grabbed another piece of metal, shaking her head.

"That's funny. Same here." She said. The two girls engaged in some more conversation, comparing stories while they piled scrap metal together, Steve getting the boys to help them. The fortification of the bus was a pretty hard job, Steve yelling at Christine numerous times for not knowing what to do, the girl starting to get irritated every time he spoke.

Steve began to pour a line of gasoline from the meat to the door of the bus, Christine using the ladder that Max had put inside to climb to the top of the bus. She pushed herself out of the hole, the girl gaining her footing and looking around. She pushed the sleeves of Steve's jacket up a little bit, breathing gin the fresh air as she watched the man in question prepare their 'battlefield'. Christine stood up there, watching as the sun began to set.

For the first time since she had been here she thought that Hawkins was beautiful, the orange rays touching every single bit of land that it could, the girl already seeing a few stars peeking from the blanket of darkness that was coming. She let out a sigh, acting as if she wasn't at all phased by what she was doing and where she was. The sunset was beautiful and she never wanted to stop looking at it.

"Get in here Christine. It's almost time." Dustin called from the bottom of the ladder, the girl nodding to herself as she turned her back on the sunset. She looked into the hole, Steve looking back up at her and noticing the ethereal glow that the sunset was casting behind her, making her almost angelic in his eyes.

She dropped back into the bus, walking past the two boys and towards the corner to sit on the floor and wait. For awhile they sat there, Lucas crawling up the ladder and onto the top of the bus and Max following. Christine watched Steve playing with the lighter, a perplexed look on his face as he did so. She took this as her opportunity to talk to him, she was getting bored and talking to Steve was her best option. She scooted over to him, Steve closing the lighter and giving her a  half smile as she slid into his side.

"You know Max is Billy's sister?" She broke the  silence between them, Christine pulling her knees up in front of her as she spoke. Steve didn't know that, shaking his head as he thought about Billy who he really didn't like.

"How is your boyfriend by the way?" Steve asked, not looking at her as he flipped the lighter again. Christine let out a chuckle, shaking her head at that.

"Not my boyfriend. God Steve, how many times are you gonna mention how terrible he is?" She asked, studying the side of his face and watching his expression change.

"I didn't even say anything about him." Steve defended, slightly lifting his hands as if to also gesture that he was innocent. Christine reached forwards and grabbed the lighter from his hand,  wanting him to look at her as she spoke.

"Yeah but it was coming." He looked at her with a half open mouth and a bit of a glare before he nodded, sucking in a breath and looking down at his feet.

"Alright you're right. But you need to listen when I say these things. This guy only wants to sleep with you. He literally told me that himself. He's an asshole, he's got serious problems." Steve said, gesturing to her as he remembered what Billy had said in the showers about her.

"Don't we all have serious problems? And who ever said that I don't just want to sleep with him?" Christine said, turning her body towards him and shaking her head.

"So you can talk about not giving up on love and how you like to be wooed and won but all Billy does is look at you and be a dick and that's enough? That's like exactly what I was telling Dustin...and you disagreed." Steve argued, trying to make a point instead of letting her continue to flip flop between her  separate opinions.

"Well I'm not falling in love with Billy. Dustin  really likes Max. And he's young. You can't set him up for a life of being a Billy when all anybody ever actually wants is somebody to love them." She said, Steve's face falling at the mention of love.

"So that's your type? Piece of shit Billy who I feel like at this point is incapable of loving someone other than himself."

"No Billy isn't my type. But I'm bored and he's hot." She clarified, giving him a irritated look as he stared ahead of him.

"I don't see it." He said, shaking his head and leaning forwards on his knees.

"See what? That he's hot?"

"No. Well yeah, but no. Like I don't see what your type is. What is it?" Steve asked out of genuine curiosity, the man finally looking over at her again and giving her a questioning look. She thought for a moment before speaking, her eyes going to the  bus wall in front of her.

"I don't know. I mean the last guy I dated was like  Billy but I still don't think that makes him my type. My type is like a good person. And he's funny, he makes me laugh. And he's sweet, takes care of me but also let's me take care of him. Somebody who loves me as much as I love them, if not more. I don't know... I guess maybe that's not my type but it's just my dream." Christine turned her head back to look  at Steve, the guy in question already looking at her. This was the first time their faces had been this dangerously close, Christine sucking in a short breath as her eyes trailed over his features.  Her smile slowly fell, the look in her eyes seemingly changing as they sat there. Steve fought the urge to look over her face, his lips parting as he spoke.

"Right." Steve said, trying not to let his intrusive thoughts win. Before he could even get the chance, Christine seemed to get ahold of herself, the girl turning her head and clearing her throat.

"I'm gonna go check on them up there."

"Alright." Steve said, his eyes slightly wide as he moved his head back a little.

Christine pushed herself up using Steve's shoulder, his eyes attached to his jacket on her body. He smiled slightly to himself, shaking his head and clearing his mind of some of the thoughts that were creeping in there.

"Dude Steve...." Dustin called to him from where he was at in the bus, his face covered in a smile.

"What?" The younger boy snuck over, sitting down beside him and giving him an excited face, Steve not entirely sure why he was looking at him like that. "What man?"

"She totally likes you."

"What? Shut up. No she doesn't." Steve said, shaking his head in disbelief and looking up at the ladder where she was standing outside of the door. He looked back down, registering what he said and then looking back at Dustin. "What makes you think that?"

"Dude come on. You ask her what her type is and she describes you? Hello...wake up Steve! She's got a crush. And you sound a little jealous." Dustin said, gesturing to his head and giving Steve an obvious look. The older boy shook his head, letting out a sigh as he crossed his arms over his chest.

"Alright that's taking it a little far. Jealous of what?"

"Billy." Dustin deadpanned, looking unconvinced.

"No I'm not jealous I just hate that guy and the things he said about her."  Steve said, his blood boiling as he even thought about the guy. He didn't like Christine and Billy hanging out but that wasn't out of jealousy, he just thought she deserved better than that piece of shit.

"And the fact that they hang out." Dustin said, rolling this eyes as Steve went to speak again.

"And the fac- no. You're reaching Dustin. Back up. Why are you so close to me?"

"She likes you." Dustin whispered, getting really  close to Steve's face and using his lips to really enunciate the words. He then pulled away, walking back to his previous spot and giving Steve a creepy nod and smile as he stood in his corner. Steve groaned, shaking his head as he thought about Dustin thinking that him and Christine had something going on now. His thoughts were cut off by a loud screech from outside the bus, everyone inside scrambling to the window and everyone on the top of the bus turning to look in the direction it came from.

"You see him?" Dustin asked, everyone searching for Dart.

"No."

"Lucas, what's going on?"

"Hold on!" Christine dropped back into the bus, crawling up behind Dustin and looking out the window from her spot. "I've got eyes! I've got eyes! Ten o'clock! Ten o'clock!" Lucas screamed, all of them looking in the direction he called. Christine felt the fear strike her as she saw what exactly he saw, her heart dropping when Steve pointed it out.

"What's he doing?"

"What in the hell is that thing?" Christine whispered to herself, Steve answering Dustin.

"I don't know." The creature crept forwards, stopping before going to the meat pile that was laying there.

"He's not taking the bait. Why is he not taking the bait?"

"Maybe he's not hungry." Dustin offered a solution, no ones eyes leaving the creature.

"Maybe hes sick of cow."
