Therapy (Mendel & Jason)
Jason sat on the table his eyes dancing around the room before finally settling on my face. "Mr. Mendel? Do you think I need therapy?" This question caught me a bit off guard.
"Well not particularly, I think everyone needs someone to talk to Jason." I smile and Jason looks me over again. I clear my throat. "So where do you want to begin?" A look of thought took over Jason's face.
"Well do you think it's normal for someone to not want to hang out with friends?"
"It's normal to not want to hang out with people from time to time. But you should want to see your friends." He frowns a bit. "You do have friends right Jason?"
"I mean your my friend so is Whizzer and my mom..." He trails off looking a his feet.
"See that's a start!" I exclaim trying to make him feel better. "That's why we're hanging out right? So we can talk?" Jason nods and smiles at me.
"Do you like chess?" He asks a spark in his eyes.
"I'm not a huge fan of it but if you want to teach me I'm sure I can learn." I see his face light up.
"Alright! Let me show you!" He runs off bring back a chess board and some peices. "My Mom hates playing chess! She thinks it's boring but that's crazy! It's like the coolest thing ever!" I nod.
"Oh yeah it seems like so much fun." I say trying to not sound sarcastic. Jason shows me how to play and I smile going along with him. Only after he beats me for the 15th time do I call the game. "That was very interesting Jason, but I'm not very good at it." Jason laughs and shrugs.
"You're not awful it's just really hard to be this good!" He motions over his body and I laugh.
"You're a funny kid Jason. I'll tell you what when I come over next time I'll beat you in chess."
"No you won't!" He laughs.
"I bet you a bag of candy I will!" Jason laughs again and shakes his head. He's a sweet kid, his parents are lucky to have him. I'm sure in a few sessions he'll warm up to me enough to talk about his dad. Until then I have a chess game to win.
