Chapter 27
( May's POV )
I laid in bed with Misty, Dawn, Leaf and nurse Joy besides me. Nurse Joy nodded. "Just a small fever."she said. "I would stay in bed for the day. You'll be better before you know it." I smiled weakly. Leaf and Misty followed nurse Joy out of the room, but Dawn stayed.
"Get better soon, okay?"Dawn asked worriedly.
"Yeah, yeah."I said quickly, which made me cough. "I'm not a baby Dawn." Dawn smiled and shook her head.
"I know."she said softly. Then she too walked out of the room, leaving me alone in bed. I closed my eyes, but couldn't sleep. I guess the fever was because I wasn't able to sleep. I could only think about Drew, Brendan, Misty and the killer. My mind basically exploded from the information. And Jenny didn't help much either.
I rolled to the other side of my bed, away from the window.
Dawn and Leaf seemed happy. Of course they were afraid for Misty, but their lives were further fine. They both had a boyfriend that would stay with them and care for them. Dawn even had Kenny. And who did I have? Except for Dawn, Misty and Leaf, that is. Misty had us, Sky and Ash. But she still had to live with a murder and someone trying to kill her. I didn't have to face that sort of things. I just needed to figure out who the killer was.
I looked under my bed and picked up Brendan's notebook. I took a pencil and started to write, under Brendan's piece:
Target: Misty Waterflower, Cerulean City gym leader, sixteen years old.
After all this time getting various clues we know the target. Officer Jenny won't believe us, but Dawn and Paul heard them saying it. Their faces are still unknown, but they're after Misty. The killer killed an Azumarill (which is a water type, specialty of the Cerulean Gym). Later on a Surskit has gone missing. Also a water type pokémon. But there were two persons in the room, talking about their vengeance on Misty. One guy, one girl. The killer is a girl, probably with a Houndour or Houndoom. But who's the guy?
I looked up from writing when I heard a sound. I frowned, but didn't see anything. "Anyone here?"I asked. No answer. I turned back to the notebook when I heard the same sound. "Hello!" I shrugged. It was probably just the wind. But before the pencil touched the paper again the window closed loudly. I looked up seeing the shadow of someone I once knew very well.
"Hello Brendan."I said slowly. Brendan didn't say anything. "Are you here to kill me?"
"I am a lot of things May, but I'm no killer."Brendan said angry. "I'm here to talk. And not about the killer, but about us."
"There is no us, Brendan. You made sure of that." I sighed. "Where were you these last days? What happened to Zinnia?" Brendan looked down, tears in his eyes. "So you were there? Were you the one that killed her?"
"I already told you I am no killer!"Brendan shouted. I was a little shocked at his sudden change of emotion, but I just straightened and looked him in the eyes. "I'm leaving and I wanted you to know that I'm fine. I wanted you to know I still care."Brendan said calmer.
"Still care?!"I yelled, ignoring the headache I had. "You were there when Zinnia died, I can see it in your eyes. Zinnia is the whole reason you're still alive! I gave up on you Brendan! If you're dead or not, you're dead to me." Brendan's eyes were filled with pain, but I wasn't gonna pity him, just for feeling bad. Even if he hadn't killed Zinnia, he was still accessory. Brendan nodded slowly.
"If you're interested,"he said with a low voice. A voice that made me think of the kid I knew when I was little. The boy who always tried to cheer me up. The boy I cheered up when he was down. This sounded like when he lost in the first round of the pokémon league. We were ten years old then, what had happened to us?
( flashback )
Brendan was sitting at the side of the river throwing small rocks. I sighed. I knew how badly he wanted to win and then he lost already in the first round. I walked to him and sat next to him. "Hi."I said softly. What could I say? He lost. There was nothing I could do to cheer him up. "You okay?"
"Not really."Brendan said and he threw a small rock as far away as possible. I could only look at the rock as it hit the water.
"Nobody is the best, Brendan."I said in an attempt to cheer him up. "Everyone loses sometime. Someone wins the pokémon league, but that doesn't say that person is the best. It only says that person had the best strategies, or just the most of luck. Next time you've trained more, you know more. You're still learning Brendan. Everyone is."
"I worked so hard on this."Brendan said with a low, almost hollow voice.
"And you got into the league. Do you know others that were in the pokémon league?" Brendan shook his head and threw another rock. "Brendan stop being a sore loser." I stood up, angry. "You need to get a hold of yourself! If you want to win the next league, you need to train. And hard." Brendan sighed, but stood up.
"My mother always talks about Almia High, and how good I'll get if I just went there."
"Then we'll go to Almia High."I said pleased. "We'll both go. We'll stay together until the end, deal?" Brendan chuckled and gave me a high five.
"Deal."
( end of flashback )
"If you're interested,"Brendan said with a low voice. "I would really appreciate it if you said goodbye to me at the airport. I'll be in a disguise, so only you'd know it's me. I'm leaving around 11am. I hope you come." Then he walked away. Falling out of the window on the back of a Pidgeot. I sighed.
I would come. Even if I didn't want to. Our friendship couldn't be gone. It just couldn't be.
( Leaf's POV ) (It took some time, but I finally found something that I could tell out of Leaf's POV!)
The history teacher smiled at me, though there was something in that smile that just didn't feel normal. I gave an awkward smile back. "Is everything going alright?" I nodded, feeling a bit uncomfortable. Dawn sat beside me and was busy reading. The man walked further to Ash and Gary. Ash had his headphones in and was dancing ridiculously. Pikachu was under the table, embarrassed for its trainer. Gary on the other hand was telling pick-up lines to me all day long. I was getting kinda tired of it.
"Mr. Ketchum?"the history teacher said. Ash didn't stop dancing. The teacher sighed. "MR. KETCHUM!" Now he had Ash's attention. He took the headphones out of his ears and looked a little surprised and ashamed. "How is your work going?" Ash rubbed the back of his head.
"I uh... I'm at the first question."he said with a nervous laugh. Apparently the teacher wasn't very happy with this.
"Your iPod, please?"he said, while holding out his hand, waiting for the small electronic to get into it. Ash slowly gave his iPod to the teacher. "One more trick like this, mr. Ketchum, and you've got detention for a week."
"A week?"Ash said with open mouth. The teacher nodded and walked away. I turned around to talk to Ash. He was angry, but also afraid. Well, he was being stupid, dancing like that. I honestly never saw the history teacher this mad. Usually he was very nice, but today he had a bad temper. "I was just having fun. It's not like history is fun."Ash murmured.
"You were being ridiculous."I said. "But that's okay. I guess he has a bad day. Usually he's super nice. Today I've got the feeling even his smiles are full of anger."
"Maybe his smile isn't normal, because you see yours everyday."Gary said, trying to get attention.
"If you hadn't noticed, yet, you can't see your own face. Unless you've got a mirror." Gary growled, but decided he wouldn't start another conversation again. "But about something else. I'm going to the library, using the computer there. I'll search through files of the Cerulean Gym, you in?"
"Isn't that like hacking?"Dawn said as she turned around.
"In some way, maybe."I said thoughtful. "But it feels like it's our only chance."
"What about the drug dealer?"Ash said. We all sweat dropped.
"What drug dealer?"Gary asked. "If you mean the drug Misty was talking about, that's a medical drug. There's no dealer, just..." Gary stopped in his sentence.
"Just what?"Dawn asked, frowning.
"It's medical, so what if a school nurse is killing?" I thought about that for a moment. I always had a feeling the killer was a grownup. But nurse Joy? Since when was she hardcore? No, it wasn't nurse Joy that was for sure.
"Are you suggesting nurse Joy is the one killing people?"Ash asked. He was, for once, being serious. (Serious Ash! Sorry, it's in my nature...) Dawn chuckled and shook her head. Ash and I were silent.
"Think about it."Gary whispered. "Nurse Joy is always there. She's the only one that could be in the hospital, without becoming a suspect. She has access to various medical drugs. She could come in Brendan's room, without anyone questioning her. She's a nurse, she heals pokémon, what if she can use them after too? Maybe there was a Houndoom in the pokémon center. She could've used it to kill that Azumarill. Nurse Joy can go through every single street, without anyone thinking weird about her."
"That's all true, but nurse Joy doesn't have a gun."I said in nurse Joy's defense. "And Gary she healed you, right? She also healed me. If she was the killer, she could've killed us already."
"No need to."Gary whispered, convinced of his argument. "You forgot everything. You were no threat, and I never was. The gun can also be explained. Nurse Joy wouldn't be the only one. We still have that mysterious guy."
"What about the most important argument?"Dawn snarled, but she kept her voice down. "I recognized the voice of the girl. Girl. And it was certainly not nurse Joy's voice."
"Acting."
"How can you sound like another person? Nobody can act that well."Dawn whispered angrily. "Just give up, Gary. It isn't nurse Joy."
"Do you want me to prove it."
"I want you to let it go."
"Guys, stop okay!"Ash growled, way too loud. The teacher walked to us. Thank you, Ash. For being so incredibly stupid and loud. I glared at him, turning back to my history work.
"Could you please tell me what's so secret?"the teacher asked. This was Ash's mess to clean. Ash laughed nervously. Dawn turned around, and Gary kept his mouth shut.
"Nothing!"Ash said uncomfortably. "Just a rumor about... Paul and Dawn." Dawn's face turned red. She glared at Ash, but was unable to say anything. Gary and I chuckled. "Dawn says they're not together, but we don't believe her."
"I'm gonna stop you right there."the teacher said, and Ash let out a relieved sigh. "Mr. Ketchum, from tomorrow on, you'll have detention after school." Ash opened his mouth, but closed it when he realized he couldn't talk himself out of this. "A week."the teacher continued. Dawn smirked and Gary and I did our best not to laugh. Pikachu on the other hand, was rolling on the ground from laughter.
"Pika! Pika! Pikachu!"Pikachu yelled laughingly. Now Gary and I couldn't stop it, and we burst out into laughter too. The teacher gave us a death glare. Gary and I were immediately silent, even Pikachu stopped laughing. Ash bit his lip, still ashamed. The teacher walked away. Gary put his hand on Ash's shoulder.
"Hey, it's a nice teacher, he must have a bad day."he said. Ash nodded, but didn't seem very convinced. Dawn looked at the clock.
"You can pack your bags."she said smiling. Just after she said that the teacher repeated those exact same words. I stood up to pick up my bag and stuff my books in it, when I felt a finger on my shoulder. I didn't bother to turn around.
"Not now."I said fast. But Gary didn't stop tapping on my shoulder. I finally turned around with an angry face. Gary smirked. "What?"I snapped. Then his smirk changed into something else.
"There's someone behind the window."he said, not looking very happy with it. I turned to the window. Red stood there, waiting. I grabbed my bag and walked as fast as I could outside, to him. He kept standing there, not saying a word.
"Hello."I started. No answer. "Were you looking for me?" Red's eyes met mine.
"I don't want to talk. I just wanted to see you. You seem fine."
"But I'm not."I said with a sad tone in my voice, slowly taking my backpack off and laying it in the grass. "Red, I can't give you the love you want, but I am your friend."
"Friends, don't ditch friends."
"When did I ditch you?!"I snarled. He didn't answer. "You can't remember, can you? Red I never meant to hurt you, but I can't lie to you! I can't lie to myself. I love Gary. Let me..."
"Barry's funeral."Red said fast. "You weren't there, but Dawn was. It was the day we were woken up by our teacher, because Brendan was missing. Dawn, Kenny and some others came. You don't have to know Barry, but you can at least come to his funeral! Even if you do that just for me. Do you have any idea how much I gave up for you? And what did I get back? Nothing. Do you want your happy ending with Gary? Have it. But I'm no part of your life anymore, Leaf. There are always consequences."
"Consequences for what?"I asked angrily. "I'm so sorry I wasn't able to go to Barry's funeral. I'm so sorry that I love someone else. I'm so sorry I wasn't there for you! But you say this like it's simple! So here's reality! I've got other problems than one dead guy."
"One dead guy."Red growled. I didn't feel like talking anymore and tried to walk away, but Red grabbed my arm. His nails pierced into my skin, leaving vague marks. I was ashamed of calling Barry that, but I wasn't gonna let Red control me.
"Look, I tried to make it up to you!"I yelled. Some people noticed us, but I didn't care. "If you want to stay in this miserable condition, that's fine with me! I don't even need a friend like this."
I walked away, slowly rubbing the place Red's nails had left marks. I walked past the lockers, the classes. Through the empty halls, without knowing where I went. I realized my backpack was still with Red, but I didn't turn back. I heard some noises and walked a room in. I closed the door, not bothering to look where I was. I didn't even switch the light on. I turned around to walk just a little through the room, when I bumped into someone. Who was in the dark?
( ????? POV )
I walked around the corner, pretending to be someone else. My footsteps were loud, even though I could walk as silent as the night. I didn't move as graceful as I could. I didn't want to be like this any longer. I didn't want anything, except for revenge. I opened the door as silent as possible. Lucky for me, no one was here yet. I walked to my room, closing the door behind me. I let out a sigh before laying down on my bed.
After a few minutes I stood up and walked to my closet. I searched through my stuff, before picking up the suitcase. I opened it and let my fingers touch the gun. A walkie talkie lay besides the deadly weapon, still in perfect condition. I changed in my suit. After I finally took the walkie talkie in my hands.
"I'm coming to you."I said through the communicator. "Tell me where you are, over." I didn't get a response. "Derek?" No answer. Fine! Then I would go to the training room, hopefully he was there. I left the walkie talkie in the suitcase and climbed out of the window. I moved so fast, the only thing you could see was a glimpse of my black suit.
But there was one thought going through my mind. Is Derek in trouble?
( Leaf's POV )
I took a step backwards to stay in balance. I couldn't see anything in this darkness. I could only tell when the person moved, though that was incredibly fast.
"Sorry."I murmured. I could hear the breath of the person. I could feel it.
"It's fine." A fast reply, low voice. I wanted to say something, ask something, but I couldn't because a female voice came up out of nowhere. It was heard that it was from a walkie talkie. I heard the same noise as the walkie talkie of officer Jenny made.
"I'm coming to you." I wondered if the man was married. Maybe this was his wife. Maybe he was in some sort of trouble. "Tell me where you are, over." The man stayed silent. My heart beated faster. This voice didn't seem like a sweet voice. It was colder. The man didn't move. "Derek?" Derek. I didn't know anyone named Derek. I searched for the light switch before feeling something hitting me hard on the head. The darkness stayed, and all my other senses seemed to leave me. I fell on the ground.
