There was nothing to stop the race of her heart as it thundered in her chest as she stood before that familiar door. Fingers curling and clenching at her side as she worked up the courage to ringknocksomething because she was going to explode otherwise.
It was not healthy to be this nervous over something so simple, but Roman loved Bella dangerously and that door was standing between them, a wall that represented everything that she felt inside. It was some sort of symbolism thing wherein once that door opened, Roman wasn't sure if he would ever be able to close it again if she could ever close shut out what she felt for Bella.
She took a deep breath, giving herself a final pep talk before she knocked on the door with a silly tune she had learned from her dad when she was younger. A flush of embarrassment rushed through her the moment she did it and she could easily imagine the flush that had burned through her cheeks and flared at her ears. It was silly to be so nervous, so anxious when she had spent the entire day with Bella as she had always wanted. It was impossible to still be this affected by one person - it made Roman feel quite helpless she silently waited for the door to open.
It was more damaging to her ego that she jumped once it opened, startling from her thoughts as Bella stood before her, smiling a little thing shyly at her, a secret laugh hiding behind her dark circles and thick lashes as the girl witnessed Roman jump with a yelp, a fiery blush overtaking her cheeks.
"Ready to go?" Bella asked, lips twitching into this tiny half-smile that hit Roman hard causing a quirky mess of a thing to burst out in the form of a smile.
She nodded, scared to open her mouth in case she said something dumb, and stepped back to make room for Bella to step out, trailing after the girl like some lost little animal. She felt like this odd mixture of heavy and light like her body was warring with itself on what she should feel. Giddy and nervous, a strange thing that made her skin feel like it was tingling, a euphoric sensation that burst in her chest as she watched Bella climb into her truck, slamming the door shut and working to crank the heat in the chilly cab. She found her to be so endearing, so wonderful even as she was doing the most mundane of actions.
Following after her, she settled in the same seat she had been in only this morning taking in the things she didn't notice on the drive to the hospital. It was clean, tidy wherein it didn't look brand new nor did it have that new car smell, but it looked good, lived in as one would expect a lot of the vehicles of Forks to look. Roman couldn't help but look around at everything, checking to make sure she hadn't accidentally smeared any of her blood anywhere. She hadn't, but she still felt like she had somehow felt a trace of it behind like the mess that she normally was.
The truck oddly enough didn't have a radio or at least not one that she could notice. The space that she would usually house it was empty, a hole in the dash area that looks like it was a clawed out, deep scratches left behind big enough to match with her hand. It made a shiver crawl down her spine, a swoop of dread in her stomach that had her prodding the stitches on her lip with her tongue.
There was a silence that made her quite anxious, a hand that wrapped around her throat and squeezed, Roman didn't know what to say or how to act. Was this a date? She certainly wanted it to be but the changes were incredibly slim, Bella still being in love with Edward or more than likely not being open to a relationship with another girl. It made navigating this much more difficult when she didn't have an injury to guide them.
"Do you know which movie you want to see?" she asked, peeking at the other girl through her hair.
Bella glances at her, a quick thing that looked more like it was a nervous tick than anything else, like she had forgotten that Roman was even there. "There's this, uh, thriller zombie movie that came out a little while ago. I was hoping to see catch that and maybe have a little time to get something to eat first."
Roman hummed. "Yeah, that sounds great, I love thrillers, I'm a big baby and will try to peek through my fingers the whole time, so don't worry about me."
The brunette chuckled, sort of breathless and hoarse sounding like the action was foreign to her, but it sent joy washing through Roman anyways, filling her lungs so it felt like it was hard to breathe.
"I'll hold your hand if you need it," Bella teased, and it took everything not to wince. She wanted to say yes, yes that they should hold hands because then she wouldn't be so focused on the movie, because she wanted nothing more than to hold her hand, because she loved her so much that it felt like it was going to consume her, suck everything that she was away leaving her to wither away like a flower deprived of sunlight or water.
Instead, she said, in the most playful, flirtatious tone she could manage, "Be careful Bells, if you gave me your hand I would never let go."
It was enough to make Bella laugh, face flushing with a happiness that made her glow so beautifully, not realizing that Roman meant every word. That Roman could never really bring herself to lie to Bella like she could anyone else.
"Don't worry, I'm sure you have soft hands," Bella said, startling her with how softly she spoke before looking over, a small smile toying at her lips, genuine, and Roman felt her breath catch, her heart stuttering wildly in her chest.
Unsure and feeling very small all of a sudden, Roman just nodded as she felt her cheeks burn, hoping that Bella couldn't see the deep colour in the glow of the streetlights, and returned the smile with her own she one.
"I don't understand why they insist on making zombies so gory when they die, like isn't the whole point that they're dead and like rotted? Why would their head explode if you stab them? Why would there be so much blood?" Roman complained loudly, trying to shake the spidery, shivery feeling she felt as she walked alongside Bella, the movie having just ended and the smell of popcorn still surrounding her.
"Maybe so it's scarier for people?" Bella suggested, shoving her hands in her pockets and shrugging her shoulders in this noncommitted way.
It was easy to see how Bella was absent for most of the movie, hardly jumping at any of the scares and hardly engaging for most of the night. She didn't really blame her, knowing that the girl had been depressed for months since Edward had left, Roman feeling the absence of the two people she loved almost as hard, but it still stung a little each time she went unanswered, or each time Bella would grow distant, her eyes glazing over as she thought of one thing or another - most likely him, them, the family she never got to meet no matter how badly she wanted to.
"If they wanted scarier they could just kill more people instead of zombies, how are you supposed to be scared of one of the bad guys dying?" Roman rebutted, loving the way the other girl's eyes lit with the invitation that she was offering, hoping that Bella would take it and jump into the conversation of dead things.
"Well shouldn't dying for anything be scary? I imagine it's still dangerous for them to kill a zombie when the infection could spread through the blood spurts," Bella said, giving Roman her full attention since the car ride, and the girl felt like she was weightless.
Roman nodded in acceptance. "But that also raises the question if zombies really count because they aren't exactly sentient beings, and that brings us back to the blood spurting, big mess, problem that causes the fear of infection in the first place. Should something rotting burst like a balloon filled with water or would in just sort of implode under the force?"
There was no answer and Roman looked over, finding Bella no longer at her side but a few steps back, staring across the street to a group of rowdy bikers that were catcalling at anyone who passed them by.
Turning back to her friend, she bumped her way back through the other people leaving the cinema, calling out an apology as she went until she reached Bella's side again, catching the end of some muttering before the girl took a step out into the street.
"Bella, where are you going?" Roman asked in confusion, catching the back of her jacket before she could go too far and get herself hit by a car.
"I just, I think I know those guys," Bella said, pulling free of Roman's weak hold on her jacket and crossing the street.
She blinked, not understanding what exactly was happening before she quickly followed after, checking both ways as she crossed.
"They don't really look like good people, Bell's, and I think they're drunk," Roman whispered to her as soon as she caught up. "Maybe we should just turn around and come back another time, during the day maybe or when they aren't drinking would be good."
"It'll be fine, Ro, just wait here for a second," Bella told her, leaving the other girl on the sidewalk as she skipped her way down to meet them.
She shifted nervously, itching to go down and drag Bella away, to force the girl into her car and keep her there away from these sketchy strangers on their bikes. One of the men leaned forward onto his handlebars as he spoke to her, smiling at Bella in this way that made Roman physically ill and gestured to his seat, inviting Bella to get on with him.
Roman felt her stomach jumped into her throat as she quickly made her way done to them, her blood chilling as Bella got on behind him and he pulled away past her, whipping hair into her face as they passed.
She spun on her toes, wanting to reach out and snatch her off but they were already gone from sight, making the girl stand there feeling like her world had shattered. One of the men coughed, gaining her attention and Roman spared him a glance over her shoulder, shrewd and angry.
"Your little friend seems to be occupied for a while," he spoke, disgusting mouth pulling into a grin. "I can give you a ride if you want, entertain you a little."
Roman sneered, fingers curling into a fist. "I would really not like that at all, thanks. Where did he take her?"
"Don't know, around," he tells her, leaning against his handlebars. Roman had to wonder if this was what they constituted as flirting or attractive. "I could help you find them if you want, sweetheart."
"No, don't call me that, god. Also, don't ever talk to me again," she snapped before she turned around and made her way back to the sidewalk, standing with her arms crossed as she watched the streets carefully for any sign of Bella and the psychopath that took her.
So many frightening, terrifying situations flashed in her mind, as Roman tried to figure out if this was her fault; if she could have somehow avoided this. She didn't know what to do and realized with a startling clarity that this would be something that Jessica could have figured out but she hadn't wanted to invite the other girl.
Still, it didn't keep Roman from digging out her cell and calling the police, reporting the group of men that were loitering by the theatre drinking and giving a scare to quite a few women hanging around, hoping that she had made it convincing enough for them to send a car to chase of the guys (or hopefully find them in some sort of violation that would get them taken in because she hated them all so much and the way that had just let their friend run off with Bella, they were more guilty than she was, enabling him to drive her around).
It was the longest twelve minutes of her life until Bella showed up again, stumbling off the bike and beelining it back to her side. Roman caught her immediately, throwing her arms around her tightly and leading her away from the men to the other side of the street, not caring for cars this time.
"What the hell? Are you okay? Did he hurt you? Do you want me to hurt them? I will if you want, I already called the cops on them so best case scenario they get arrested, but I can literally kill them for you if that's what you want. Did you actually know those guys? We should probably get out of here before the cops show up but we can wait if they hurt you. Are you alright?" Roman stopped, breathing deeply before closing her eyes tightly and releasing a shuddery sigh.
"Ro, I'm fine, I'm fine promise, not even a scratch," Bella reassured, patting her back awkwardly from the position of the hug. "I'm really sorry I worried you. I didn't think it would scare you this much."
Roman laughed breathlessly. "Bella, I think I would literally lose my mind if anything bad happened to you, I'm not even joking."
A strange look passed over Bella's face before she nodded, somewhat slow and dazed, alarming Roman a little at the odd behaviour, but it passed quickly, almost as though it never happened.
"I'm really sorry, Ro," she repeated and Roman shook her head, trying to slowly chase away the nerves that were threatening to consume her.
"It's okay, just don't worry me like that." She looked back, their loud voices grating against her nerves, and Roman began to slowly lead her friend away, not wanting to be anywhere near those men and their stupid faces. "We really should get out of here though, in case the police do show up."
Bella laughed, a high sweet sound. "You actually called them?"
"Of course! Do you think I would take any precautions with your safety? Like it would have been cool if you knew them, but those guys were sketchy Bell's."
The girl nodded, agreeing as she glanced over her shoulder at the guys. "Yeah, but it was such a rush."
Roman startled, unsure of how to approach the topic. "I guess, motorcycles can be a rush, but there are safer ways to do it. We just have to find something else if it's something you want."
"You don't think I'm crazy?" Bella asked in disbelief.
"Maybe a little, but I was also ready to lead a manhunt if he didn't bring you back, so maybe I'm a little crazy too."
Bella never answered, and Roman wasn't sure if she wanted her too. They were both way too busy sorting through their own thoughts after the whole affair. All she knew though, was that it was nice to have the other girl so close, even if it might have only been as a way to comfort her.
"You want to pick up something to eat quickly before we head back?" Bella asked, blushing as her stomach grumbled.
Roman smiled. "I think they have a drive-thru around here somewhere. Come on, I'll treat as long as you don't make fun of my burger-nugget combo."
