Chapter thirteen
(Go see EyesOfAmethyst to see her P.O.V! By the way, in case of any confusion. Amethyst and Aira are teenagers)
After realizing that I was trapped with Clay, my brain immediately went to overdrive, clearing away my nausea and wooziness. Oh gosh, oh gosh, oh gosh, I am alone with a play boy. Not good. Not good. Definitely not good! I think panicky. I watched him rummage through a cupboard and then pull out a roll of bandages, a small brown glass bottle, and a small scrap of linen. He walked back over to me. "Roll up your pants and lift up your skirt." He ordered. "Excuse me?" I scoff, glaring at him. "I'm not going to do anything. I just want to take care of your cut." I purse my lips and stare at him a moment longer. Sighing inwardly I lift my skirt slightly and rolled up the pant leg. The cut wasn't very big, and it had stopped bleeding, but the sight of it still made me a bit woozy. I steeled myself, determined to not show weakness in front of Clay.
He looked at the cut and then at me. I look back, slightly annoyed and a bit embarrassed. "Well?" I ask. I hold my hands out for the stuff, but he raises his eyebrow. "Do you know how to bandage a wound, my love?" He asked. I cringe at "my love."
"Do you have to call me that?" I growl.
"Your avoiding the question."
I look down and murmur my answer.
"What was that?"
"No. But I can figure it out." I try to grab the items again, but Clay moved them out of my reach. "Exactly what I thought." He mused. He went down on one knee and moved to grab mine. I pull my leg out of the way. "Woah, what do you think you're doing?!" I demand angrily. "I'm just trying to take care of the cut. Nothing more. I promise." Clay said, looking up at me. I didn't trust him, but it was either he help bandage my cut, or I wait for Meli. And I don't know when Meli would come. And besides, if he tries anything I can just kick him in the face. This thought made me feel better. I reluctantly set down my leg so he could tend to it. "You better not try anything." I warn. "Wouldn't dream of it, my love." Was his reply as looked down at my cut.
He set down the bandage roll and pulled the cork stopper out of the glass bottle. Then, he poured some of it on the linen and hesitated. "This might sting a bit." He placed the linen lightly on my cut. As soon as it made contact I grimace in pain. It stung a bit, but I knew it was probably a disinfectant or something, so I just grind my teeth and bare with it. After patting my leg with it a few times, Clay set down the scrap of linen, picked up the roll of bandages, and got to work wrapping my knee. For awhile neither of us spoke. Then Clay suddenly broke the silence. "You know, I don't force girls to do anything. Despite what you think of me, I'm not a monster." I didn't have a response for him, so I just stayed quiet. He continued. "I tell them exactly what their getting into when they ask me out. The relationship would be purely physical, but I wouldn't force them to do anything. No actual feelings involved. Just kissing and sweet words. Usually they except anyway. I take them out for awhile. I have fun in that time, and so do they. I always break it off soon after though." "So you use them and then break their hearts?" I ask, half angrily, half annoyed. Clay stopped what he was doing. It was like someone had pressed pause. He slowly began wrapping my knee again. "I suppose your right." He said and looked up at me. His eyes were blank. "Maybe I am the monster you think I am after all." I felt uneasy looking at Clay's expressionless eyes. He looked too much like Elias.
Clay scared me. I wasn't easily scared, but right now, he scared me. I didn't know what he was going to do. There were countless things he could do. I didn't know if he was going to do anything, and not knowing scared me. "Clay?" I ask. He blinked a few times and regained his usual expression. "Sorry my love, I spaced out for a moment there." He looked down and finished tying my bandage. "Ok, you're all done." He patted my now bandaged knee. I responded by trying to kick him. Sadly, he moved out of the way just in time. "Don't touch me!" I snap angrily, standing up. I look at my knee and begrudgingly admit he did a good job on it. I roll down my pant leg to cover it. The pant leg still had a blood stain on it, but hopefully with some water and soap it'll wash out. "Thanks." I grumble. "Your most welcome." He said with a smirk. Just then the door opened and Meli walked in followed by Amethyst and Kate. "Oh my gosh, I am so sorry I wasn't here!" She said, breathing hard. "I was out talking with one of the merchants about-" Her voice faded out as she noticed that Clay was there. "Wait. . ." She looked between us. "What's happening here?" Nothing! I yell before Clay could open his mouth. "Clay helped bandage my knee, that's all." Amethyst looked at us, gaping. Oh no. I could already see her shipping gears whirling. If I didn't stop her, she'd be shipping me and Clay until she finds a better ship. "Nothing. Is. Happening!" I say loudly and slowly. "It. Will. NEVER. Happen!" Clay, Meli, and Kate all looked confused on why I was talking so loudly and slowly. But Amethyst understood. She pouted and crossed her arms. "Party pooper." She mouthed at me.
Just then, Chase walked through the door. He looked winded and leaned against the wall to pant. "You,(pant), know, (pant), Aira, (pant), wouldn't die from a, (pant), scratch." He managed and shook his head. "Your not in very good shape, are you lord Chase?" Kate asked. "Not really, Kate." He chuckled and finally stood up properly. "I need to get out more it seems." "Uh, where'd you come from?" I inquired, confused on why the lord would be panting in the infirmary. "Oh, um, Aira I ran into Chase while we were looking for Meli." Amethyst explained, going slightly red. "Oh really?" I raise an eyebrow at Amethyst. She shrugged sheepishly. I frowned and remembered what I saw last night. I'll have to ask him about that later. I thought to myself. Chase looked over at Amethyst and then walked too her and took her by the hand. He whispered something into her ear and then led her over behind a curtain. Wait what? What the actual heck did Chase think he was doing? I just stood, unmoving, for a solid two minutes. "Uh Aira?" Meli waved her hand in front of my face. I snapped back to reality (op, there goes gravity 😎) and then ran over to the curtain. I almost ripped the curtains off their hinges and find Amethyst in Chase's arms, faces inches away. "Aw hell no!" I scream and literally shove them apart. Chase stumbled back, face red. "A-Aira, it isn't what you think!" Amethyst stammered. "Damn right it isn't!" I practically yell, fuming. Meli ran over and grabbed my arm.
"Aira calm down! Come on, we can all be mature about this!" She said frantically. "Lord Chase, you better run." Clay said calmly, watching the whole thing unfold with an amused expression. Chase looked at me fearfully and did the only thing any sane person would do. He turned and ran for his life. As soon as Chase had gone out the door I whipped to Amethyst. I was so mad I didn't even know what to say. Amethyst looked back at me. Amethyst knew how much I care about her, but sometimes I just wanted to smack the lovely-dovey part of her brain right out of her. She was just so entranced by the idea of true love. Sometimes she forgot. . . She forgot about how I felt. Every time she thought she'd found love, her heart would be smashed and I'd be the one left to pick up the pieces. Is she not satisfied with just me being here for her? Am I not enough? These thoughts scare me. I can't lose Amethyst. . . She's my best friend. . . My anger fades away as I look at her, replaced with bitter sadness. "We'll talk later." I grumble, staring at the floor. "Aira. . ." Amethyst reached out her hand to me but I flinch away. I know I'd hurt her by doing this, but she hurt me. I'll forgive her. Probably in about five minutes. But right now, I was upset.
Meli made me sit down again and show her my now bandaged knee. After she looked over it and approved the job Clay did, she made him show her the stuff he used. He showed her the linen and bandage roll, and then the small glass bottle. When she saw the bottle she became confused. "Clay, you know that this isn't just a disinfectant right?" "What?!" Amethyst yelped. "What do you mean it's not disinfectant? Did he put poison on her cut or something!?" "What? No, no! It's not poison!" Meli said quickly. Amethyst sighed in relief. "Look, I'm sorry for scaring you. I didn't mean too. You see, this," She held up the bottle. "Is a disinfectant. But it's mixed with magic herbs and potions. It's only used for seriously dangerous wounds, like a deep stab near the heart, or getting bit by an animal. Not for scratches." She turned and looked at Clay. "Why did you use this?" Clay gave his usual smile and shrugged. "Better safe then sorry." He said simply. Meli's confused look was replaced by a one of understanding. "Clay." She began slowly. "It was just a cut. She's not going to end up like"- "Don't. You. Dare." He growled coldly. I stiffened. There it was again. The coldness. I edged toward Amethyst and grabbed her arm. She looked at me, confused but also a bit relieved. She knew that by doing this all was forgiven. But we were still going to talk. I just stared at my feet and squeezed her arm. "Clay? Can we get going now?" Amethyst asked. "Hm? Uh yeah. Yeah ok, let's go."
An hour later, we said goodbye to Kate and walked around the village some more. We met some more people and were having fun. That was until we ran into the Clay's fan girls. We were walking along, minding our own business, when suddenly Clay was surrounded by screaming girls. I stumbled back, shocked. Amethyst came over to me and watched, shocked as well. "Ooohhh Clay! Your so cool!" One of the girls squealed. "And handsome!" Another girl mewled. I gagged and looked at Amethyst, partially disgusted at the conversation we were being forced to hear. She looked as disturbed as I felt. We just stood there, gaping at Clay and his fan club as they push and shove each other to get closer to him. The heck? Why are these girls so into Clay? I wonder. I watch as Clay pulled a cute girl with brown hair closer to him. He wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her against his chest. I gaped at him, frozen in disbelief as he placed his hand under her chin and lifted her face towards his. Their faces got closer. And closer. And closer. Until their lips were inches apart. I suddenly found my voice.
CUT IT OUT YOU DAMN PLAY BOY!! I scream angrily.
They all turned and looked at me. Some of them were glaring at me, but I was too fuming to care. "Nobody wants to see you do that! I don't wanna see it!" I point at Amethyst. "She doesn't wanna see it! NOBODY wants to see you kiss girls! So cut it out!" I yell, stomping my foot for emphasis. Clay and his fan club stared at me. I knew I shouldn't have yelled like that, but Clay had gotten on her last nerve. Clay gazed at me for awhile before releasing the girl he was holding and pushing his way out of the crowd. The girls gasped in shock and some even tried to pull him back. He brushed them off and then swept up to me.
I step back from him. I don't know what he was trying to do, but I didn't like it. He opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by a cold voice saying: "Clay August." Everyone turned to see Elias walking towards us, expression blank as usual. Immediately all of Clay's fan girls scatter and run off. Amethyst grabs my hand and pulls me back to a safe distance where we stood and watched the show. Elias went up to Clay and tilted his head slightly. "Clay August. I would appreciate it if you didn't case a riot every time you go into town." He said. Clay gave a coy smile and shrugged. "I can't help it if the ladies are into me." Elias gave no response and instead, looked over at Amethyst and I. "I have spoken to Derik Mitch. He ran into the guard tower when I was training, blubbering that he was attacked by a demon girl. Do you have know anything about this, Aira Heart?" He asked. Oh uh. I purse my lips and nod. I see. "You do understand that I should arrest you now, correct?" "I'd rather you didn't." I confess, backing up a bit. Amethyst moved to get in front of me, but Clay got there first. "Now hold on Elias. Derik had it coming. You don't have to arrest anyone." He said. I look at Clay in disbelief and then feel a surge of anger. "What are you doing?!" I whisper hotly. "Be quiet, I'm trying to help you." He whispered back. Elias looked between us. "Clay August, it has come to my understanding that you must be interested in Aira Heart. However, I do not care how attracted you are. As a guard, you know that you must put your feelings aside. Your duty comes first. I also do not see why you are attracted to her. She is not as pretty compared to some other girls in the village." He said flatly. I stare at him. Did he just insult me?
Amethyst edged over to me and grabbed my wrist. Then, we both slowly backed away from the two boys. They didn't notice. After distancing ourselves, we took of running. I don't know what just happened. But what I do know is that Amethyst was right here, running besides me. And that made me happy. I don't need a boyfriend.
All I need is my best friend.
